SAVE
ANWAR IBRAHIM!
Amnesty International, human
rights groups and the world, recognize Anwar Ibrahim, former Deputy
Prime Minister of Malaysia, as a prisoner of conscience. After two
controversial trials, he was sentenced to a total of 15 years in
jail. He has been imprisoned since his arrest on 20 September 1998,
and has been kept in solitary confinement for this entire period.
On the night of his arrest,
blindfolded and handcuffed, he was brutally assaulted by the then
Inspector General of Police, causing serious multiple injuries,
for which he received very belated and incomplete treatment.
In October 2000, Anwar began
to complain of severe back pain, and was finally admitted to Kuala
Lumpur Hospital in November. The specialists attending to him, both
local and foreign, have concurred that a major contributing factor
in his present condition was the assault that night of his arrest.
THE STATE IS THEREFORE FULLY
ACCOUNTABLE, AND BOTH LEGALLY AND MORALLY OBLIGED TO ENSURE THAT
ANWAR RECEIVES THE BEST TREATMENT AVAILABLE.
Despite repeated requests,
it was only on March 10 2001, that Dr. Thomas Hoogland, a world-renowned
specialist in spinal problems, was granted permission to examine
Anwar. At the same time he assessed the facilities and medical expertise
available at HKL, since the authorities had indicated that Anwar
would not be allowed to go overseas for treatment.
The main observations, conclusions
and recommendations contained in Dr. Hoogland's subsequent report
are that:
Anwar's condition is complex,
and therefore cannot be satisfactorily treated by conventional methods.
The entire medical team has agreed that the only viable option is
endoscopic microsurgery.
Conditions, equipment and medical
expertise currently available at HKL are inadequate for such highly
specialized surgery, and cannot be improved upon in time for Anwar's
operation, which must be carried out within 4 - 6 weeks of Dr. Hoogland's
initial examination.
If the operation is carried
out at Dr. Hoogland's own Alpha Clinic in Germany, which has all
the required equipment and medical support staff, Anwar has a 90%
chance of full recovery.
Whilst awaiting the operation,
Anwar needs to remain in hospital under close medical observation,
without which further deterioration of his condition may occur.
The following should also be
noted:
Anwar has offered to bear the
entire cost of the treatment if allowed to obtain it at the Alpha
Clinic.
Anwar has given his personal
assurance that he will return to Malaysia once the treatment is
complete.
During the run-up to the 1999
General Election, the Alternative Front parties unanimously named
Anwar Ibrahim as their chosen leader of the nation. Anwar Ibrahim
has the right to the best treatment available in our global village.
IF ANWAR'S TREATMENT IS SUCCESSFUL, THIS WISH OF THE PEOPLE FOR
A FREE AND DEMOCRATIC NATION WITH GOOD GOVERNANCE,LED BY ANWAR IBRAHIM
CAN BE FULFILLED.
At this time, as the voices
of Anwar and his supporters in the Reformasi movement are increasingly
suppressed by the authorities, we need your SUPPORT and URGENT ACTION,
to put pressure on the authorities:
**to grant Anwar bail whilst
waiting for the hearing of his case.
** to allow Anwar his right
to obtain the best treatment available, at the Alpha Clinic in Germany.
