Florida Junior Community College Student Government Association
District IV Delegate Leadership Retreat Camp Kulaqua Oct. 11-13, 1998
Santa Fe C.C. Delegate
John M Jones III

Things I did:

District IV Meeting

The meeting discussed primarily three things. One was the design and colors of the District IV T-shirts and the State T-shirts. It was decided that the District shirts would be white, and the designer of the logo would decide the state FJCCSGA shirt's color.

Roger Lopez, State Director of Legislative Staff, discussed at length the proposed issues FJCCSGA could vote on at the spring conference. He also discussed House Bill 4259 and said that Student Governments must deal with this issue because it is a law. A delegate stated that students should contact their local legislators and let them know their comments about this law. The same delegate remarked that SGA's should set up a Legislative liaison so important legislative issues could be gathered year-round and so each SGA can remain informed and up-to-date. He continued to remark that students must be pro-active regarding legislative matters and not wait until someone brings them the information.

The other item of business was a discussion of a District IV leadership banquet next spring. No decisions were made regarding this matter. One of the District IV advisors asked that each college get together and brainstorm for activities/speakers/ and workshops for the Spring FJCCSGA conference in February 11-14, 1999, Tampa. Delegates with ideas were to meet and give them to the advisor.

FJCCSGA Workshop Committee

Delegates met to discuss the ideas for workshops at the spring conference. The initial plan is to have 4 (workshop) tracks that contains about 6 different activities/workshops. Three of the tracks are:

  "Leadership", "Community Service", "Promotion"

One suggestion from SFCC was to have Mr. John Cowart do a workshop about time management, and another suggestion was to have workshops dealing with the new technology of web pages and how SGA's can use them. As a result of this John Jones has been asked to facilitate workshops (at the spring conference) on "How SGA's can use web pages to promote SGA/CAB and SGA/CAB activities.

Leadership Activities

These activities provided everyone with great opportunities to expand their leadership vocabulary and skills. The diverse group of delegates from numerous community colleges also granted students a chance to meet new friends and discover new ideas for a stronger, better Student Government.

Mike DeRosa, from Smile and Think Inc., facilitated all of the leadership activities for the retreat. They included:

"SNICKERS"-Set goals, Never pessimistic, Inner spirit, Create Opportunities, Know How Pressures Affect You, Easy to be Me, Respect, Stress and Burnout.

"TEAM"-        Together-     Everyone-     Achieves-     More

TEAMWORK is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishment toward group objectives. It is the fuel that all common people use to attain uncommon results.

"SAILS"
-Self-motivation or "Rigging the sails of success"
Actually listening or "Reading the Nautical charts"
Interactions or "Sharing the waters with the natives"
Leadership or "The Captain at the helm"
Spirit and Smiles or "Land ho"

"MEETINGS, MEETINGS, MEETINGS...."-meetings are up to you and the members to make them effective, efficient, and fun.

BUDGETING & PROMOTION"- Principles of Buying and Selling Budgeting, Utilizing Resources, Publicity and Promotions.
