Soundwaves...CD Reviews:Weeping Tile, Cold Snap

by Gary Savelson

This recording is an immaculate piece of work and consequently, one of the best releases of the past year. The music found on Cold Snap is a sensational blend of folk, rock and unforgettable choruses, placing Weeping Tile in the company of groups such as R.E.M., Throwing Muses, Liz Phair and 10,000 Maniacs. Singer/guitarist Sarah Harmer's vocals, highlighted by commanding harmonies, remain the project's focus -- whether beside jangly pop-capades ("Cold Snap", "Pushover", "The Grin") or sobering ballads ("In The Road", "Westray"). The prime cut of Cold Snap is the reserved and melodic "U.F.O. Rosie", a story of an extra-terrestrial encounter.

Every cut on this album is worthwhile or outstanding, putting Weeping Tile up there with the heavyweights who miraculously sell ten million units in the span of a year. Unfortunately, this group isn't going to be pulling those kind of numbers, as their music doesn't quite fit the motives of the commercial media conspiracy. They might, however, become critically acclaimed for this magnificent set of songs.
