Yes, I've had my problems with cats both figuratively and musically! This album is a fun compilation of songs about cats and other critters. Some I wrote. Some are traditional. I hope all are enjoyable!
The Old Grey Cat---One of a gazillion versions of the theme
of the cat coming back. Once while I was performing at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO., I did this
song during a show and an elderly gentleman came up to the stage and told me he had a version of
this song that his grandfather used to sing to him around the turn of the century. We went behind the
stage and he sang his version and in it the cat came back nine times. Of course, many of the
"accidents" that happened to the cat wouldn't be considered politically correct today. This version is
one that has evolved from different versions that I have sung over the years. I'm sure the root of the
song comes from a New Christy Minstrels album that I used to listen to back in the '60's.
The Cat and The Hawk:---I don't know who wrote this song.
I "borrowed" it from fellow balladeer and yodeler, Gene Grassie. It's a good story about
misidentification! If you are the author let me know. Otherwise, just enjoy!
Ranch House Out On The Plains---Penned by yours
truly. This is a song about a cat that came to live at our house and promptly took over! He's still here,
staring at me as I write these words!
The Old Chisholm Trail and Git Along Little Doggies---
Not about cats but cows. Sometimes, when performing in big city elementary schools, I pause during
Git Along Little Doggies and ask what a doggie is. The usual response is PUPPIES! This always
conjures up an image in my mind of a mighty big herd of dogs going down the trail!
Home On The Range and Waiting For A Train---
There are all kinds of critters out on the range including hobos, waiting for a train.
Chopo, Clementine, You Are My Sunshine, and Little Liza Jane---Songs about
good horses and uh-b-better women.
