As of August 1 (98), we've had about 2000 survey responses so far of the 5000 who have taken the complete test. Those who put commentary in their survey are included here (all 2000 are being compiled now for statistical results as well to post in a few weeks).
Feedback has been so interesting that we are working on a total revamp and revision of the test, set up to be more "custom tailored" for female, male, with kids, no kids, in relationship, not in relationship, from a Western country, from an Eastern country etc. divisions to help compensate for cultural and gender skew. Watch for it in the coming months - we'll announce it in our newsletter when it goes up.
Also, for the Eastern (and other) countries' versions, we could use some help on eliminating the American skew of it - if you took the test and are from another country, could you please write us with suggestions as to what you feel we should do to make the test less "American" in your view and more appropriate to your own culture (and let us know what country you are from please). Thanks!
We're also working on making the test more readable and easier to follow (for those of us old fogies like us two who find the text swims a bit)...

- It was interesting, but there were several questions were what I really believed wasn't an option and I had to choose something non-representative...thus I ended up with a result that really doesn't reflect who I am at all...I mean, come on: doesn't read? Me? Let's get real. It was a fun test, though. Note: This came from a male test participant. We acknowledge the response has a bit of a slant using the perspective that most of the audience is female, since our statistics from the test are very largely female in origin. Traits that apply to a female butch as opposed to a male butch are different (like interest in reading). We're working on removing the skew on that and that should be corrected by the time the new version goes up (in a few months).

- Fun, like for you to do lots of research and see if can come up with a norm-referenced test or at least one that could help those who are having difficulty knowing their sexuality. Note: We're afraid the psych community may have difficulty in recognizing research done by two folks not in their field, or we'd consider that. We're hesitant to use testing to determine sexuality - why this is a satire for fun only - one test taken at one moment in a person's life does not reflect their entire life or entire mentality, but we do grant that there needs to be something better out there than the MMPI!!

and includes some questions I wouldn't have
thought were relevant. Note: Our methods were purely observation of human nature and a satirical view of the butch/femme stereotypes... nothing official or scientific - just having a little fun with what we've seen in people and what others have commented about.

Note: we agree that the best source is the individual him/herself. The object of satire is to make more visible the little things we as humans "ain't quite right in the head" about, and our culture's obscession with testing is one of them. At least, we hope you found it recreational - else, why take the test? We've provided it just so folks can have a little fun with our inexplicable desire to "fit into some kind of club" and to "prove" that we belong to it through some kind of challenge or test. Hmmm.... maybe there is some ancient "pack" mentality we're hitting upon here... you sociologists out there want to comment on that?

psychologists who wouldn't be able to do
better, i think. Beats the socks off the
MF scale in the MMPI. Note: thanks. We tried to get a little more in depth than simply "if you like to repair cars you are masculine" and "if you like to arrange flowers you are feminine" (Reb's taken the MMPI and laughed her way through the test). Or as she puts it, "what on earth is that childhood game they refer to on that test - has anyone played it in the last 40 years?" On a more serious note, we feel the MMPI is seriously and dangerously out of date, and urge the psychological community to find something more in tune with how sexual identities are changing in society if they still feel compelled to give that kind of testing to people.

i think the reason the test said i was androgyne is because i tend toward "butch" things like trucks & tools for the not-necessarily-butch reason that i am a visual artist. (we *need* trucks & tools for our art!). Note: actually a large number of visual artists lean toward the butch end. We suspect this is due to the creative aspect. The feminine creativity is reproduction, the masculine creativity is the making of things, if you follow a Freudian view on it (which we find a bit silly, but may actually have some validity in a few things).

There were better questions this time, less total relationship questions. More personal this time. Hmmm... just wonderin' -From an androgene Leo (never did think I fit my sign! LOL) Note: the attractions and astro signs mentioned are based on an average norm for the b/f type. Obviously, where there is a norm there are also exceptions or you couldn't have a norm curve :)
- Lot's of fun. Too bad we can't add "Other" on a few, like I don't carry a purse or a fanny pack, but my back pack is not one of the selections offered. Note: Back pack qualifies essentially the same as a fanny pack, in case you were wondering. It's a "hands off" form of carrying your things in some way other than in pockets (pockets are a different category due to being so close to the body and non-removeable). This question, by the way, illustrates your sense of income security and ability to recover loss - not your fashion sense... hehehe... had ya fooled, didn't we?
The more "hands on" you carry your money, the more you work at avoiding losing it. But, the more away from the body that money is held, the more secure you are about getting income to begin with.
For example, if you clutch a purse, you therefore are "hands on" about keeping your income, but a purse is carried away from the body, therefore you are secure about having an income to begin with: it is provided for you - voila, the "kept person" or "income subordinate" profile - extreme femme. This type knows that they will be taken care of but live forever worrying about when/if that support will be lost. They tend to go to pains to remain sexually/romantically desireable to their keeper, since that is the money they barter with. Likewise they hang on tight to the money they have already received.
In contrast, if you tuck money in your pocket, you are very "hands on" in it being attached to you, AND in it being "secure", meaning you are not only concerned about making an income but also concerned about losing it - voila, the "keeper" or "income dominant" profile - extreme butch. This person goes to pains to maintain an independent income, and tends to be a bit tight fisted in ever spending it, except when it is spent to take care of a loved one - then they tend to "take off their pants and empty their pockets" - and spend too much.
And in the middle are the fanny pack and back pack gang, who are not as worried about having to make an income (since they aren't "keeping" anyone and prefer partners to have independent incomes), but are still worried about losing it, since they have nobody to fall back on if they lost what they have earned. They carry "hands off" and but close and attached to the body. This is the middle range of femme from soft androgyne on up, except for extreme. To split hairs, a fanny pack would be more femme than a back pack due to distance from the body.
The other middle are the ones who don't carry cash but use credit/checks/ATM cards instead. They are "hands-on" in that they do carry the symbol of their money generally very close in a pocket or wallet, but are "away from the body" in that the actual cash is in a bank somewhere and nowhere near them physically. They're very concerned about making an income, feeling like nobody would help them if they didn't and not wanting to be helped (very proud and independent), but not at all concerned about losing it, being very self-confident in the fact they can easily find another way to earn more. This is the middle range of butch from hard androgyne on up, except for extreme. The more remote the cash, the less butch, i.e., a credit-card carrier would be less butch than a check writer, who is less butch than an ATM card carrier.
Just thought you'd be interested in a little of the psychology behind that question ;)

- I was amused that the answer came up androgynous, as that's the way I feel about myself generally. I am female, but neither feminine nor masculine. What I found more interesting was that the two categories on either side felt off, but only slightly off. That was weird.

- I've *no idea how I ended up to be Extreme Femme, and the people I told were very surprised. I've very short hair, wear a lot of leather or at least pants and a shirt, and my house is presently a bit of a mess. If my partner doesn't cook dinner, I scrounge for food. I'm a freelance technical journalist and work a lot. In short, with the exception of the parties, I don't really fit the profile. Go figure.

friends/lovers think I'm a femme - coming
up as soft androgyne is quite amusing!
The questions about situations with "lovers"
threw me for a loop. I don't really date,
but when I've been in a relationship, our way
of handling things like who pays, who sits
where, etc. were never an issue. For instance,
comfortable/cushy chairs or sofa - we always had
two, equally convenient for TV, reading, etc.
Going out to dinner - well, since we had a joint
account/credit cards, etc., it didn't really
matter who paid. On the other hand, if it was
to be really special, one or the other would take
the money out of our own personal funds, rather than
the joint account (where the majority or our
salaries went). Also, since I had 3 kids, most, but
not all of their expensed were paid from my salary with
the balance going into the joint account.
Thank god I made decent money!
Certain questions, like if you were "forced" to
wear eye shadow, you had to pick a color. Well,
in my eyes, most femmes generally always wear
eyeshadow and the color depends on the color of
their outfit, or the occasion, etc.
Their were no questions about cooking utensils or
types of cookware, which to me are very telling
in the butch/femme dynamic. I don't know of
too many butches who care what pot they use to
cook in, but femmes and queens, usually have
certain pots to do certain things, ie, stock pots,
casserole dishes, several types and sizes of strainers,
several types and sizes of cutting boards....
What about adding a question about where one prefers to sit
or stand in a bar? All the femmes I know or who I've observed
over the years, prefer to sit at the bar if there is a stool with
a back and it's located at the end of a bar, not in the middle.
Their first preference is at a table. I'd be curious how others
view this phenomena. Thanks.

- It was fun. Would like options to include kids, like minivan as choice for vehicle, and "It doesn't really mater who pays, our fincances are merged." for the date question. (For us old foggies, who follow a pretty traditional view of life, though we are Lesbian.) Another sugestion: Maybe a slightly different form of the questionnaire would work better for parents/prospective parents, and one could "click" to another page which has kid options where relevant, but are identical, when not. Thanks. Note: interesting idea - more "custom" testing... we'll consider that as we do the rework on the test (to post in a few months).

- hmm very interesting, in every seperate test, I scored Strong Femme, and expected the full to read the same, my jaw hit the floor when i came up as Extreme Femme Note: try again. If you use Explorer as your browser it could have been a code problem (note: this was our fault - NOT Flutterby's) we've fixed.

- This test is a lot of fun and it's even helped me to see myself in a different way. I've always thought of myself as a femme with butch tendencies, and even when I took the segment quizzes I was listed as androgynous, which I thought was about right. But when I took this test, it listed me as extreme femme. Note: Please try the test again - it may have been the Explorer browser problem we've mentioned earlier here! It's not that I think it's inaccurate, I just find it funny how accurate the description was--though I don't wear makeup at all and my house is a disaster with dishes in the sink, papers everywhere and clothes all over the floor and I think I'm a terrible hostess. What would be an interesting aside to this test would be to get the participants birthdays (year not necessary) and make a chart as to which astrological signs scored where in the scale--as the description of extreme femme implies, I am very organized and meticulous, even a bit anal about things. I'm also pretty nurtuting. This is a common description for virgo, which I am. I just think it would!

- Heheheh... I was sitting here laughing and identifying with the result as I read that I was going to be laughing as I identified with the result... I've taken all the various smaller segments and scored generally in the middle with small excursions to each side (more often to femme than butch, though). I realize that the test contains a lot of Western stereotypes, but for me, it works. Both emotionally and physically (now) I fit the role quite well. (P.S. My pshrink, who just happens to be lesbian - my previous one was gay) would probably rate me just about the same.) Take care, ladies, and thanks for the enjoyment.
