Grandfather" Of The Bataks

(Huta Dame)

Pontas

人的H.K.B.P.

Normanson, a German, was born in 1834 in a poor
family. At the age of 7, he started to work as
the bread-earner. He had no opportunity for a
formal education. At age 12, he was crippled
after a car accident. He prayed for God's healing
as in John 14:12. God sent a doctor who helped
him to recover fully. He then resolved to work as
a missionary. But his responsibilities to his
family prevented him from doing so.

As he worked as the breadwinner, he worked out
time for self-study. But when he enrolled for
study at the Bible Collage, he was turned down
for lacking the basic qualification. He did not
give up but strove on. He was turned down again
the next year but his enthusiasm touched the
College Principal, who gave him exclusive help,
which enabled him to be able to attend the
courses.

In Dec 1861, at 27 years of age Normanson arrived
at Sumatra, resolute to preach the gospel good
news to the Bataks in the remote places. The
first Batak settlement he arrived at was
Selindung. He was able to set up a school there
with 25 pupils initially.

Besides education, he also set up clinic and
because of his love and diligence, many Batak
people received help from him. However, there
were people used by Satan, tried to stop his work
and even wanted to kill him. But the Almighty God
was with him, thus resulting in many Batak people
able to rercieve Jesus Christ as the true God.
Furthermore, the wondrous love and patience on
his part also touched those who were opposed to
him.

Normanson's unrelenting hardwork together with
the spirit of God bore fruit. A witchdoctor
Panalunkap, who had used black magic to poison his
food came to Normanson, repentant, because he felt
himself burning all over him. Subsequently many
people came to the Lord, but they were persecuted
and many were driven out of their villages,
homeless. Normanson helped them built houses near
where he stayed and lived there. Eventually, that
place became a village of Christians, which was
named Huta Dame or village of peace.

Many non-believers saw the persecution on the
Christians and yet they did not waver, meantime
they found that the Christians are far more
improved in lives having peace and joy, they too
were moved and came to the Lord.

The church grew day by day and Satan was even
more ill at ease. A group of witchdoctor and
their followers planned an assault on the
Christian village. Before they attacked, God
stopped them with a serious illness among them,
which not only obstruct their plan, on the
contrary caused many among them to seek help
from the Christians there. As a result after
this plague more came to the Lord.

Besides setting up churches, Normanson also set
up Bible College, had training for preachers,
started schools, the true light of the Gospel,
lighted up Lake Toba. He and his
co-workers pushed the gospel work to the highest
point in Lake Toba, when many rajas discarded
idol worship and came to the Lord, among them
was a famous king called Pontas. Through his
help, Huta Dame was moved to a more ideal
location after 5 years now on a hill top and
name changed to village of Heavenly Kingdom.

Apart from works mentioned earlier Normanson
also translated the Bible into the Batak
language. Other contribution of Normanson and
his co-workers are; abolishing the slave
trade, dissolved the tribal wars and many
undesirable cults and practices. The more
squabbles among the tribes.

Although Normanson's schedules were heavily
packed, he never stops relented. His motto was
"Strive Forward." Great he was indeed, for he
also started commercial school and Technical
schools to improve the lives of the Bataks.
Culture-wise he set up printing press and printed
books for the Bataks. 'His lifetime contributions
to the Bataks are unprecedented and incomparable.
No wonder he was called the apostle of the Bataks
and rightly so, called "Ompu" or Grandpa by the
Bataks.

Normanson was not only a brave missionary, a bold
evangelist; he was also a great educationist and
a wise spiritual leader. Through his effort,
today 80% of the Bataks are Christians. The Batak
church is also the biggest church with thelargest
congregation in south East Asia. There are about
3 million people and in the H.K.B.P. church
itself there were about 2 million people.
