WILL SHACKELFORD*ELIZABETH MOORE
In your March number we closed while discussing the descendants of William Shackelford, son of Roger and Nancy Ann Carter-Shackelford, and will continue that record now. But we have been rushing the magazine out in such rapid fire order that we have not kept you up to date with the family news, so we will endeavor to do that in this issue.
William Shackelford, Jr., son of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was still living when his father's estate was settled, but we have been unable to locate him, or to indentify him among the multitude of Williams that we have found in Kentucky and elsewhere. We have never found the old Bible of William Shackelford, therefore do not have the date of births of his children. But without a doubt some of them were under age at the time of his death. We know that Wylie was, and perhaps others. There must be an old Bible among his descendants some place, and a copy of the record from it would be a valuable addition to this record.
Some of the children of William and Elizabeth went to Barren County, Ky., and we find one William in Barren County, according to the 1860 census, who was born in Kentucky in 1819, and whose wife was Elizabeth, born in Kentucky, 1827. They had five children, but the census taker shows only initials for three of them and names for the other two, as

follows: M.E., a female born 1846; Dorinda, born 1848; S.C., a male born 1851; S.F., a female born 1853; and James E., born 1855. And we have been unable to place or to identify this William.
Robinson Shackelford, who appears to be the second or third child of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was born in Kentucky, probably Madison County, although this record shows Edmonson, but Edmonson was not created until 1825. And he died in Edmonson County, Ky., August 4, 1851. He spent all, or almost all of his life in that immediate area, and was a very prosperous farmer. But died long before reaching his three score and ten years. He too, was a Shaker at one time, but did not remain with them for long.
Robinson Shackelford was born August 28, 1797, and he married Sarah Camp, daughter of Hardin and Sarah Hawkins-Camp, a sister to Joseph Camp, July 12, 1815. And the Camps must have been Shakers too, at one time, as this record shows that Sarah Camp was born in Mercer County, Ky., January 26, 1794. She died in Edmonson County, Ky. November 1855. They too, lived in the area that is now Mammoth Cave National Park, and many of their descendatns still live in that vicinity. Our records show they had nine children, but Robinson, in his Will, names but three of them, and one son-in-law.
WILL OF ROBINSON SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen:
I, Robinson Shackelford, of the County of Edmonson, and State of Kentucky, being weak in body and sound in mind, and knowing that it is appointed once for all men to die, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament.
First: I do give and bequeath unto my son Joseph C. Shackelford a certain tract of land known as the Demonbreun place, supposed to contain 150 acres, on the condition that he, J. C. Shackelford, shall pay two several notes for fifty dollars each, which Berry Eaton holds against me.
Second: I give and bequeath to my son Martin

Luther Shackelford, my farm known as the Cora Valley place, containing 90 1/2 acres. And I do give unto my son Martin Luther, Berry Eaton's interest in a 79 acre tract which I hold his obligation for. I also give and bequeath to my son Martin Luther 65 acres of land, the place that Gregory C. Doyle formerly lived on, in place of a house, having given all the rest a house except the said Martin Luther and my daughter Sarah Elizabeth.
Thirdly: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Elizabeth, a house, and bed and bed clothing and bed sted, one cow and one sow and pigs and one saddle, bridle and blanket.
And lastly: I give and bequeath unto my wife Sarah, all the rest of my property after paying my just debts, all that may arise from any and every source, whether of cash or land notes or stock or household and kitchen furniture, wagons, farming utensils; and to be kept by her for the use and benefit of my family. And at her death to be equally divided among all my children.
And I hereby appoint my wife and my son Joseph C. Shackelford my executor and executrix without security, and in case my son Joseph C. Shackelford should not be willing to pay the two fifty dollar notes held by Berry Eaton against me, and take the Demonbreun place, I give and bequeath to him on the final distribution one hundred dollars extra of the other gifts mentioned in this Will; and in the last place I hereby give unto my wife Sarah full authority to sell or lease the Demonbreun place as she may think best in case my son should refused to comply with the conditions mentioned first in this Will. And finally I make and ordain this my last Will and Testament hereby annulling all wills by me heretofore made.
Witness my hand and seal this the fourteenth day of June eighteen hundred and fify one. (June 14, 1851).

It will be noted that Robinson Shackelford mentioned only three of his children, but he had nine, seven of whom apparently lived to maturity. They were as follows:

It will be noted that two of the daughters of Robinson Shackelford married men by the name of Doyle. Several of each family moved to Missouri, while the others remained in Kentucky. And there were two or three inter-marriages between the Doyle descendants. Some years ago this writer had correspondence with one of the Doyle descendants, she having been a Doyle and married a Doyle. She sent us some records of the Doyle families, but referred us to a gentleman in Brownsville, Ky., whom she said had more records of the family than any one else. We wrote the gentleman and he admitted that he did have records and would be happy to copy them and pass them on to us. That was about twelve years ago, and we have not received the records yet, and we understand that he is now deceased.
But our records show that Geergory C. Doyle and Harriet Brilla Shackelford, no dates shown, had the followiing children: William Scott, Woodford, Sarah (Sally), Benjamin, Perry, Jacob, Mary, Eliza and Issac M. Doyle. A total of nine.
Of the family of Joseph Carrter Shackelford we were a little more fortunate. Joseph Carter, son of Robinson and Sarah Camp-Shackelford, was born in Edmonson County, or what later became Edmonson County, October 29, 1818, and died in Saline County, Mo., November 28, 1856. He was married to Cynthia Ann Johns, parentage not shown, November 30, 1843, to which union were born eight children, one of them six months after his death. They were as follows:

Lafayette Columbus and Eugene Loving Shackelford both served in the Union army during the war between the States, Eugene Loving haveing entered when only fifteen years of age. He never came back, either being killed or dying of disease.
Joseph Carter Shackelford, Jr. was born six months after the death of his father, and he lived to a ripe old age. He spent the last several years of his life totally blind. He is now deceased, but do not have the date.
We would greatly appreciate additional information of the Simms, Marlin and Hieronymous families. Each of them had large families, but thus far we have been unable to contact any of them.
Our records show that William Lafayette Pearson was born in Illinois, January 4, 1851, and died in Missouri, probably Saline County, April 19, 1920. He was married to Harriet Brilla Shackelford, daughter of Joseph Carter and Cynthia Ann Johns-Shackelford, January 15, 1874. She was born in Saline County, Mo., May 16, 1855. Date of her death not shown. They had at least six children, as follows: Clara Bell, Joseph Lester, Stella Hurt, (the latter known as "Dot"), Pearl May, Norene Cynthia, and Eugene Ray. The first named-Clara Bell having died in infancy. The other five lived to maturity, married, and as far as our records show they are still living. We need information of their families.
Joseph Carter Shackelford, Jr., the posthumous son of Joseph Carter and Cynthia Ann Johns-Shackelford, was born in Saline County, Mo., May 27, 1857. He is deceased, but we do not have the date. He was married to Laura Covey, daughter of Silas Harper Covey

and his wife-Miranda Jones, September 8, 1881. She was born in Wisconsin July 21, 1862, and died in Pettis County, Mo., June 22, 1935. They had five children, as follows: William Melvin, Lona Mable, Minerva, and two others that died in infancy- Leslie Martin, born Dec. 24, 1888, and died July 1889, and an infant son born June 18, 1885 and died October 25, 1885.

We have reports of some new members of the Clan, but they are very recent, so we will wait and report them when the dates are in accord with the date of the magazine, as we are still in arrears with publication of the magazine.
We have two weddings and one approaching marriage to report, two of them belated, but not heretofore reported to you.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin T. Shackelford, of Colonial Heights, Petersburg, Va., announced the approaching marriage of their daughter-Betty Jane, to Mr. Richard Morris Ellison, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Ellison, also of Colonial Heights, for November 1955. We do not have a report of the wedding, but presume the vows were exchanged when and as planned.
Then we have a belated report of the marriage of the winsome daughter--Miss Patricia Glenn Keen, (daughter) of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Keen, formerly of Columbus, Miss., we presume to be now living in Birmingham, Alabama, to Lieutenant Marion Easley Shackelford, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Easley and Mary Cooper-Shackelford, Sr., of Columbus Miss., July 15, 1955, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Birmingham, Ala.
Then a very recent marriage that will be of interest to many of you, was the marriage of the talented and lively Miss Virginia Clair Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Virginius Brown, of Macon, Ga., to Mr. Thomas L. Gordon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Nathaniel Gordon, of Milligas, Florida, on March 2, 1956. The wedding vows were exchanged in Sacred Heart Church, Warner Robbins, Ga., where Mr. Gordon is now serving his country in The United States Air Force, Warner Robbins, Ga.
Mrs. Gordon has been a subscriber for our little leaflet for a number of years, and recently placed an order for a complete set of twelve volumes. And it is of interest to note that she descends from Captain John Shackelford, Revolutionay soldier, son of Roger and Carey Baker Shackelford, whose descendants are being discussed in the current issues

of the magazine.
To all of whom, we on behalf of the entire Clan, extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes.

We have several deaths to report, but all of them, except one, like the birth and marriage records, will have to await a more appropriate time.
But the one death that we will report is that of one of a branch of the family that we will be particularly grateful to any one that can and will send us additional information on this family.
William M. Shackelford, a retired Mercer County, Kentucky farmer, age 89 years, died at the home of his daughter--Mrs. Otis Carter, of Versailles, Ky., March 8, 1956. Survivors include three daughters, four sons, one sister, twenty grandchildren, and twenty nine great grandchildren, also one great great grandchild.
We have reasons to believe that the above named William M. Shackelford was a son of Zachariah Shackelford and Mildred Jane Ellis, who married in Franklin County, Ky., 1854. Confirmation of this one way or another will be greatly appreciated.
And to those who mourn his loss we, on behalf of the entire Clan, we extend our deep and profound sympathy. May the Lord bless and comfort you.
