Motto: a people which takes no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors, are not likely to achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by remote descendants.

-------------------------------------------------

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY VIRGINIA, CONTINUED

In this issue of the magazine we are going to give you some of the descendants of the early Shackelfords of Pittsylvania County.

It will be noted that the heirs of William Shackelford signed an agreement to permit Ann Shackelford, widow of WIlliam, to possess all of his property during her natural life. That was in 1845. See your July magazine, page 4. This is evidently the William Shackelford that married Ann Reynolds, March 16, 1812. And our records show that William and Ann Shackelford had the following children:

John T.----------------------(married ??

Absalom---------------------(married Elizabeth Sikes)

William----------------------(married ??

Nancy-----------------------(married ??

Ann--------------------------(married ??

Mary H.----------------------(married ??

Francis A.--------------------(married Mary A. Crowder, ??)

Elizabeth C.------------------(married Joseph S. Rice)

The above is all we have of this branch of the Shackelford family, therefore will be grateful to any person that can and will add to the above. What became of them, and who are the present day descendants?

There was another Shackelford family in Pittsylvania County that we have been a little more for-

2 (982)

tunate in obtaining information of. We refer to the descendants of Thomas and Catherine Shackelford. Thomas died in 1809. See your July magazine, page 3.

It will be noted that Thomas and Catherine Shackelford had but two children--Richard D. and John L., both of whom moved to Marengo County, Alabama.

Richard D. Shackelford's full name was Richard Dunford. And it is tradition among his descendants that the name "Dunford" was the maiden name of his mother. And if that is correct, then the wife of Thomas Shackelford was Catherine Dunford. Therefore we will be grateful to any person that can confirm this one way or the other.

The full name of John L., brother to Richard D., was Jonathan Lyon, as is proved by records in our possession. And there is a tradition among his descendants that his father's name was John. But by the records we have given you in your July magazine we see that that tradition is not correct. And by other records we have submitted it is apparent that there was a connection in some manner to the Lyon family. July magazine, page 4. And this might indicate that Catherine Shackelford, wife of Thomas, was a "Lyon". But of course that is strictly speculation. But the middle name of John or Jonathan was "Lyon". And as before stated, both of these brothers later moved to Marengo County, Alabama.

Richard Dunford Shackelford was a soldier, an officer, in the war of 1812. He was twice married, and there is some question as to the identity of his first wife. Tradition has it that her name was Moreland, but that is questionable.

We know that Richard D. and John L. were brothers, and that they lived in Pittsylvania County, Va. And from the records there we find the marriage record of John L. to Sarah Chisenhall. Then we find a marriage record of one Richard B. Shackelford to Susan H. Medlock, December 27, 1814. So we are of the opinion that is Richard D., not Richard B., and his first wife was not a Moreland, but Susan H. Medlock.

But that she was a Moreland or Medlock we are not certain. But our records show that his first wife

3 (983)

died about 1827, and that by her he was the father of seven children, as follows:

Susan R.------------------(married William H. Coleman)

Thomas G.----------------(married ?? d. March 25, 1845)

Karren Ann---------------(married Daniel Stewart)

Henry M.-----------------(b. March 10, 1821, d. July 11, '42)

Richard Dunford, Jr.------(married Daisey Porter)

James Turner--------------(b. Oct. 17, 1827, died 1852)

Eliza-----------------------(married a Mr. Warren)

Richard Dunford Shackelford was born in Virginia, probably Pittsylvania County, November 11, 1793. He moved to Marengo County Alabama, but appears to have lived there but a short time, then moved over into Sumter County, Alabama, and his post office was Coatopa. He wa a wealthy southern planter. He died November 3, 1866.

Richard Dunford Shackelford, after the death of his first wife, married for his second wife--Jane Campbell, December 23, 1828. They married in Green County, Alabama. She was born, it is said, in Marietta, Iowa, in 1807, and died in 1879. They had four daughters, as follows:

Madora Ann----------------(married Nathan Bryan Whitfield)

Jane-------------------------(b. about 1830. d. about 1832)

Elizabeth---------------------(no further record.)

Mary Mable Edith------------(married a Mr. Jones)

Susan R. Shackelford, first named daughter of Richard Dunford Shackelford and his first wife, was married to William H. Coleman, September 2, 1840. We have no records of their descendants.

Richard Dunford Shackelford, Jr., son of Richard Dunford, Sr., married Daisey Porter, but we do not have the date, nor do we have any record of their descendants.

Eliza Shackelford, last named daughter of Richard Dunford Shackelford and his first wife, married a Mr. Warren, given name and date of marriage is not shown. They are said to have moved to

4 (984)

Leon County, Texas. They had six children, as follows: Susan W., William H., Henry M., David O., Richard D. S., and Alice Warren.

It is said that Susan W. Warren married N. H. Wooding, and lived in Virginia. But we have no proof for that statement.

Nathan Bryan Whitfield, Jr., was a son of General Nathan Bryan Whitfield, Sr., and his wife Betty. He was born, according to our records, in Sumter Co., Alabama, in 1844. Date of his death is not shown. He married Madora Ann Shackelford, daughter of Richard Dunford Shackelford, and his second wife--Jane Campbell, date not shown. They had five children, as follows:

Jane-----------------------(b. Dec. 31, 1865, d. Jan. 26, 1868)

Dunford Shackelford------(married ??

Elizabeth------------------(married ??

Madora Ann--------------(married ??

Mary Mable Edith--------(married ??

Our records do not show the ancestry of Thomas Shackelford, father of Richard Dunford. But in 1943 this writer had a letter from Mr. Marshall Shackelford, now deceased, but at that time he was living in Demopolis, Alabama. And in his letter to me he stated that his grandfather, whom he did not remember, as he had died before Marshall was old enough to remember, had come to Alabama at the request of his kinsman--Richard Dunford Shackelford. And this may be the clue to the ancestry of this family.

We do know that Marshall Shackelford was a son of Robert Lewis Shackelford and a grandson of Stephen Jones Shackelford. We also know that Stephen Jones Shackelford had a brother Thomas. Also that this Thomas once lived in Pittsylvania County. So if this ancestry is correct, then this Thomas Shackelford was a son of Mordecai Shackelford and his wife, Polly Jones.

Now then we come to John, or Jonathan Lyon Shackelford, son of Thomas and Catherine, and brother of

5 (985)

Richard Dunford Shackelford.

Jonathan Lyon Shackelford was born in Virginia, probably Pittsylvania County, August 12, 1796, and died in Phillips County, Ark., August 20, 1863. He was married to Sarah Chisenhall, daughter of John Chisenhall and Rebecca Buckley, December 19, 1816. She was born in Virginia, probably Pittsylvania County, in 1797, and died in Phillips County, Ark., 1874.

Jonathan Lyon Shackelford appears to have moved around considerably. Census records show that his first child was born in Alabama, the second one in Virginia, the third one in Alabama, the fourth one in North Carolina and the fifth one in Tennessee, and all the others in Alabama. We do know, however, that he was in Marengo County, Alabama, in 1844.

Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford are said to have had twelve children, but only ten are shown in the records as we have it, as follows:

Catherine----------------------(married Adam C. Scott)

Rebecca-----------------------(married John Walthall)

Mary Ann----------------------(married John McNulty)

Elizabeth H.--------------------(married Thomas Trotter Bonner)

Richard Dunford----------------(married Belvida Tully)

Sarah N.-----------------------(married John W. King)

Tabitha Beatrice----------------(married William L. Williford)

John Thomas--------------------(married Mary Ann Brown)

Caroline-------------------------(married Samuel Dye)

Nancy J.-------------------------(married John J. Dye)

Catherine Shackelford, eldest daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, married twice, her first husband being Adam C. Scott, by whom she had one son--Arthur M. Scott. She then married a Mr. Roberts, of whom we have no further information. Her first marriage was July 25, 1833.

John Walthall was born in 1809, in Virginia. He married Rebecca, second daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, date not shown. She was born in 1830. They had at least seven children, as follows: John H., Joseph, George, Nancy J., Rebecca, Sarah, and Mary A. This family moved from

6 (986)

Marengo County, Alabama, to Mississippi, then later to Phillips County, Arkansas.

John McNulty was born in Alabama in 1803. No date of death is shown. He was married to Mary Ann, daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, January 3, 1842. She was born in Alabama in 1823. They had at least three children, as follows: Alice, John and William. It is not known if this family ever left Alabama.

Thomas Trotter Bonner was born 1822, place not shown, nor do we have the date of his death. He was married to Elizabeth H., daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, September 30, 1834. (the date as we have it, but must be in error, as census records show that she was born in 1825, therefore she would have been but nine years of age. So either the marriage date or her birth date as shown here, must be in error). She died in 1871, in Phillips County, Ark. They had ten children, but the names of only six are shown, ie: R. S., Frances A., Jordan L., Thomas B., James P., and Mary E. This family lived in Choctaw County, Alabama, then later to Phillips County, Ark.

Richard Dunford Shackelford, son of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, was born in Tennessee, February 10, 1826. He died in Phillips Co., Ark., in 1900. His first wife was Belvida Tully, whom he married in 1850. They had eight children, but the names of only seven are shown, as follows:

Alice------------------(married a Mr. Brown)

Thomas Edward-------(married Mary Ophelia Hill)

Mary------------------(married a Mr. Marshall)

William R.-------------(married ??

Lucy-------------------(married a Mr. Ferguson)

Louis-------------------(married ??

Richard Dunford Shackelford then married for his second wife Mrs. Mary Brown-Wilkes, daughter of John and Mary Brown. No dates are shown. They had seven children, but the names of only two are shown, ie, Lula and Nannie.

John W. King was born in North Carolina in 1816. Date of death not shown. He was married to Sarah N.,

7 (987)

daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, May 24, 1849. She was born in Alabama, 1827. Date of death not shown. They had at least six children, as follows: Frances (Fanny), William, Nancy, Michael, Mary and M.J. All born in Sumter County, Alabama.

William Lindsey Williford, parentage not shown, was born in Edgecomb County, N.C., September 4, 1817, and died in Phillips County, Ark., February 14, 1871. He was married to Tabitha Beatrice Shackelford, daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, December 24, 1844. She was born in Marengo County, Alabama, August 12, 1828, and died in Phillips County, Ark., April 14, 1907. They had twelve children, as follows:

Walter Raleigh--------------------(married Kate E. Edwards)

Ada-------------------------------(married W. B. Barnes)

Ida--------------------------------(married T. J. Nicholson)

Mary Charity----------------------(married W. W. Chism)

Sarah Willie-----------------------(married Bascom Dunlap)

Madora Jane----------------------(married Robert Hanly)

Ella D.-----------------------------(born Sept. 6, 1858. died 1866)

William Leonous-------------------(born Aug. 8, 1861. died 1866)

Herman Lee-----------------------(b. July 8, 1864. d Oct. 28, 1889)

Infant------------------------------(born and died in 1866)

Katie Pearl-------------------------(married John Porter)

Hortense T.------------------------(married Melvin John Neely)

John Thomas Shackelford, son of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, was born in Marengo County, Alabama, December 24, 1832, and died in Phillips County, Ark., December 24, 1906. He was married to Mary Ann Brown, daughter of William Brown, December 24, 1856. She was born 1834, and died in Phillips County, Ark., 1904. They had eight children, as follows: (see letter from great granddaughter Patsy T. Johnson)

Mary Jennie-----------------------(married William Ford McAlexander)

William (Willie)--------------------(born 1859, and died in 1866)

Sarah Ann-------------------------(married Benjamin O. Thompson)

Nancy (Nannie)--------------------(born 1864, and died 1879)

John Lyon--------------------------(born 1867, and never married)

Florence----------------------------(married Dr. W. B. Snipes)

(see next page)

8 (988)

Lula---------------------------------(married a Mr. Brooks)

Walter Scott-------------------------(married a Miss Wilkins)

Samuel Dye was born in Tennessee in 1829, parentage and date of death not shown. He was married to Caroline Shackelford, daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, about 1855, exact date not shown. She was born in Marengo County, Alabama, in 1834, date of death not shown. As far as our records show they had but one child-a son named John.

John J. Dye, parentage and date of death not shown, was born in Missouri in 1830. He was married to Nancy J. Shackelford, daughter of Jonathan Lyon and Sarah Chisenhall-Shackelford, about 1856, exact date not shown. She was born in Marengo County, Alabama, in 1838. Date of death not shown. And as far as our records show they had but one child--a daughter named Malissa, and known as "Lissy".

Thus it will be seen that our records of the descendants of Richard Dunford and Jonathan Lyon Shackelford are far from being complete. Therefore any and all additional information of this branch of the family will be greatly appreciated.

And let us urge you again to please pass along to us any and all birth, marriage and death announcements of Shackelfords and their descendants. Also feel free to write us any time, all correspondence will have our attention, will receive a reply, and all questions by subscribers will be answered if we can possibly do so.

And may we say again, that our subscription list is not yet up to par, so please send along your renewals, and new subscriptions will be doubly appreciated.

As all of you know, we are far in arrears with the publication of our little magazine, but we are working over time to get caught up, and hope to have it up to date within sixty days or less.

So until next month, Adios--The Editor.
