ROGER SHACKELFORD AND DESCENDANTS
In your December magazine, page 8, we closed as we were giving you records of the very earliest Shackelfords in Gloucester County and Abingdon Parish. And we are going to continue those old Parish records until we finish with what we have, but before we continue with them we will make another statement or so that has a direct bearing on the subject.
Since we know that Roger Shackelford came to America by or before 1658, and as we pointed out in the December magazine, that it was the consensus of opinion that he had at least four sons, perhaps four others, and still two others that could have been, and since there is some question as to the parentage of Roger Shackelford, born about 1700, married Carey Baker, we deem it necessary that we give you a few records of known descendants of various branches of the family in an effort to help some one to connect their own lineage through the records here given, back to one of the sons of the immigrant Roger.
Roger Shackelford, born about 1700, married Carey Baker, be he the son of Francis, or of James, or direct from England with parentage unknown, as is shown by the Fort Reid, Florida, papers, is our own ancestor. And so beginning in this issue we will give you a few of his descendants, some of them as

shown by official records, and as far as we know have never been published by any one heretofore.
But before we begin with those records we will continue with the old Parish Records.
1-13 James Shackelford, son of James, was baptized February 1, 1688.
1-50 Charles Shackelford, son of Roger, was baptized Saturday June 2, 1719.
1-118 James Shackelford, son of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, was born May 26, 1744.
1-124 Fielding Shackelford, son of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, was born October 1, 1746.
1-69 Charles, son of Charles and Sarah Shackelford, was born February 22, 1729.
1-87 Albin, son of Charles and Sarah Shackelford, was baptized April 2, 1736.
1-131 Zachariah, son of Charles and Sarah Shackelford, was baptized August 29, 1748.
1-132 John and Charles, twin sons of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, baptized August 24, 1748.
1-153 Kemp, son of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, was born November 6, and baptized December 16, 1752.
1-162 Henry, son of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, was baptized February 16, 1754.
1-171 Magahain, son of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, born August 1, and baptized November 28, 1756.

1-131 Zachariah, son of Charles and Sarah Shackelford, was baptized August 20, 1748.
1-194 Jane, daughter of Zachariah and Mary Shackelford, born Oct. 6, and baptized November 2, 1760.
Nathan, son of Roger Shackelford, was baptized September 9, 1724.
Zachariah, son of John Shackelford, was baptized March 30, 1729.
Susanna, daughter of Robert and Mary Shackelford, born December 19, and baptized December 26, 1735.
Richard Shackelford was buried March 19, 1741.

James Shackelford was buried June 18, 1736.
John, son of John Shackelford, born Jan. 16, 1744.
James, son of Charles and Eleanor Shackelford, was born August 26, 1745.
Elizabeth Shackelford was buried August 2, 1748.
Mary Shackelford was buried November 1754.
All the above births, marriages and deaths, with but three exeptions, are of record in the old Parish Register of Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County.
And since Roger Shackelford, the immigrant, settled in Gloucester County, and since we do not find any other Shackelfords as having settled in that area, it is, to this writer, reasonable to assume that all the above are descendants of the afore mentioned Roger.
Of the above list we feel certain that James Shackelford, baptized 1688, James baptized 1690, Roger, father of Charles 1719, Charles father of James 1723, and whose wife was Sarah, Diana, who married William Darnaby, Jane that married Joseph Boswell, John, baptized 1724, and possibly Frances, baptized 1728 and Mary who married Henry Fletcher, were all children of James and Elizabeth Robbins-Shackelford.
But as the record shows Elizabeth Robbins-Shackelford and her sister Ann Robbins Freeman, both as widows, along with their families, settled upon the lands in Spottsylvania that had been awarded them by Henry Willis in 1734, and the number that went from Gloucester to Spottsylvania of these two families numbered three score, (sixty souls). So of the above list it is reasonable to assume that all the births, marriages and deaths recorded in Avingdon Parish, Gloucester County, after the year 1734, of the Shackelfords there, are children or grand children of the other sons of Roger, and not of James.
With possibly very few exceptions, for the descendants of the James and Elizabeth Robbins-Shackelford, we must depend on what we find in Orange, Spottsylvania and Culpepper Counties, and for the parentage of those remaining in Gloucester after 1734 we will have to consider the other sons of Roger.

And from Col. Robert B. Shackelford's book--"The Shackelford Family"' page 70, we find the following Shackelfords listed in the old Abingdon Parish Register.
John, son of James and Elizabeth Shackelford, was baptized January 19, 1751.
Christian, son of James and Jane Shackelford, was born Ocrtober 13, 1756.
Zachariah, son of John Shackelford, was baptized March 30, 1729.
John, son of John Shackelford, born Jan. 16, 1745.
Zachariah Shackelford, son of Charles and Sarah Shackelford, was baptized August 20, 1748.
Mary Shackelford died August 25, 1752.
Thus we have completed what we have from Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County. And will now turn our attention to other records.

Francis Shackelford, son of Roger the immigrant, was born about 1660 to 1680, in Virginia, probably Gloucester County. The date of his marriage has never been found, but he married Sarah Lewis, and of that we have proof. He shows up in Essex County, Virginia about 1698, and from the deed records in that County he seems to have lived there some ten or twelve years. According to records in our possession he was still in Essex as late as 1709, but in 1712 we find him in Bath, later Carteret County, North Carolina. He was mentioned as being deceased in 1727. So he died between 1712 and 1727, in North Carolina. No record of his Will or the settlement of his estate has ever been found.
Essex County, Virginia, deed records show that Francis Shackelford, of South Farnham Parish, sold 150 acres of land to John Shackelford, of Petsworth Parish, in 1706, and then another record the same year empowers Zachary Lewis to appear for me at the Essex County Court House to relinquish dower in the said 150 acres, my husband Francis Shackelford sold to John Shackelford, and you will oblige

your loving sister. Signed Sarah X (mark) Shackelford.
Thus we see that the wife of Francis Shackelford was Sarah Lewis, sister to one Zachary Lewis.
In and among records sent to us in November 1941, by Mrs. Jennie T. Grayson, of Charlottesville, Va., we find her making the following statement: Quote-"Zachary Lewis, of Brecon or Brecknock, in Brecknockshire, Wales, was the first of his line known to have come to Virginia. His wife's name unknown. Among the many grants of land to the name of Lewis recorded in the Land Books of Virginia, in the Land Office at Richmond, Va., there are only two to Zachary Lewis. One for 500 acres in King and Queen Co., Virginia, April 20, 1694, and one for 450 acres in King William County, Va., October 23, 1703. See Books 8, page 318, and book 9, page 556.
This coroborates the statement of Rev. Iverson Lewis, that he was the son of John Lewis, whose father Zachary Lewis came from Breaknock, Wales, to Virginia 1692, at which time he settled in the County of King and Queen. And beyond this nothing is known of this Zachary except that he was a member of the Church of England and had two sons--John and Zachary, Jr." End of quote.
This record was sent to us in an effort to show the ancestral line of Sarah Lewis, wife of Francis Shackelford. But we have never been able to see a connection in any manner. So we give it to you for what it is worth, or whatever it maybe worth.
And although Mrs. Grayson made the statement as we show you above, that nothing is known of this Zachary Lewis except that he was a member of The Church of England, and had two sons--John and Zachary, Jr; she inclosed a chart showing that he had at least three daughters--Mary, Jane and Elizabeth. Jane being the wife of Robert George, while Mary was the wife of Richard Shackelford and Elizabeth the wife of James Shackelford. She then included a family record of Zachary, Jr., which we will not publish , as it has nothing to do with Shackelford genealogy.
According to records in our possession, and according to records as shown in Col. Robert B. Shackelford's book, and also George Shackelford-Annette Jeter and

descendants, by Edward Madison Shackelford and Rev. Franklin S. Moseley, it is known that Francis and Sarah Lewis-Shackelford had a son John, born April 9, 1712, most likely in North Carolina. And it is thought that he also had sons Roger, born about 1700, the Roger that married Carey Baker. And perhaps a son William, of whom we shall have more to say in subsequent issues. But right now we are concerned with Roger.
Roger Shackelford, said to have been a son of Francis and Sarah Lewis-Shackelford, born in Virginia, probably Essex County, about 1700, but it is the opinion of this writer that he was born at a later date, say 1710 to 1715. We base our opinion on known dates of the ages of his children. He died in King & Queen County between 1779 and 1783. He is said to have married Carey Baker, but that marriage record has never been found, nor do we know when she was born or where, or when or where she died. He married for his second wife-Drucilla Hendricks, May 1, 1770, in Halifax County, Va. No children are shown for this last union.
The records in Hanover County have been destroyed, but we do know that Roger Shackelford was there in 1754. His son William appears to have been the first of the family in Halifax County, as he purchased land--600 acres, in Halifax County, from William Borroum and his wife Frances, June 9, 1766. See Deed Book 6, page 44, Halifax County, Va.
Roger shows up there in 1767, but whether this was Roger, Sr., or Roger, Jr., is not shown, but since he married his second wife--Drucilla Hendricks in 1770, it appears logical to believe that it was Roger, Sr.
Then one Roger, very likely it was Roger, Sr., sold land in Halifax County, to William Edwards, December 1777. See Deed Book 10, page 430. And we note that John Shackelford, Robinson Shackelford and Betty Glass were all witnesses to the above sale.
That was in December 1777, and we find Roger making and dating a Will in King and Queen County, December 24, 1779. So it is very likely that the land sale in 1777 was when he was selling out to

return to King and Queen County.
In your December magazine, page 5, you will find a list of his children, but in his Will he names them in the following order: William, John, Sarah, Roger, Betty Glass, wife of John Glass, Richard, James and Robinson. James is mentioned as being deceased, but Roger made the two grand daughters, children of James, legatees.
The sons William, John, Roger, Richard and Robinson, were all soldiers of the Revolution. William was a Lieutennant in the 14th Regiment of Virginia Militia, was wounded at the battle of Germantown, and died November 23, 1777.
John was a Captain, served in the campaigns in South Carolina and Georgia, and after the close of the war moved to Hancock County, Ga., and died there and is buried in Sparta, Ga.
Roger appears both as a Sergeant and a Captain. He later lived in Albemarle County, and apparently it was from Albemarle that he moved to Madison Co., Ky. He married twice, and for a list of his children and descendants see your Ferurary and March magazines, that will follow within ten days.
We have no military records for Richard and Robinson, but from various lists of Revolutionary soldiers, Robinson is shown as having served.
As to Richard, we have nothing to show that he served in the Revolution other than family tradition. But we have the most complete genealogy of this man than any other of the sons of Roger and Carey Baker. He was born December 14, 1750, and died in 1823 in Madison County, Alabama. He married Mary Ann Roberts, daughter of William Roberts, as shown by a deed of gift from William Roberts to his daughter Mary Ann Shackelford, wife of Richard Shackelford, April 6, 1775. Deed Book 9, page 409, Halifax County, Va.
John Glass who married Elizabeth (Betty) Shackelford, daughter of Roger, was also a soldier of the Revolution. And he too, is said to have moved to Ga.
