GEORGE TARLETON SHACKELFORD

As will be seen in your March 1956 magazine, page 2, George Tarleton was the fourth mentioned child of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford. And we have some data of his descendants, but all in all they have been very difficult to locate, so we are greatly in need of additional information of this particular family.

George Tarleton Shackelford, son of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was born in Warren Co., Ky., in the section of Warren that later became Edmonson County, 1799. He died in Cooper County, Mo., December 23, 1872. He was twice married, his 1st wife, whom he married in Warren County, Ky., was Martha (Patsy) Howard, by whom he had at least seven children. Her parentage is not shown, but she was born in Virginia 1792, and died in Cooper County, Mo., exact date not shown, but about 1850. Their children, as follows:

Eliza Ann--------(married Joseph Nicholas Dillard)

Mary Jane-------(married John Rutherford)

Lucy Frances----(married Daniel Ross)

William M.-------(married Mary A. ??)

Benjamin H.------(no further record)

James Allen------(married Margaret Ann Ware)

Harriet-----------(married Adolphus D. Paxton)

We have considerable data of Lucy Frances Ross and James Allen Shackelford families, thanks to

2 (1078)

Mrs Mary E. Churchill, who incidentally, was the wife of Winston G. Churchill, of Denver, Colorado. And Mrs Churchill collected this data and passed it along to us after she had reached her eightieth year. And if still living she is now in her 98th year. All other information we have of this family is from official court records and/or census records.

Court records show that Joseph Nicholas Dillard was born in Missouri, that he married Eliza Ann Shackelford, daughter of George Tarleton, March 7, 1839, in Cooper County, Mo. She was born in Logan County, Ky., 1821. No death dates are shown.. They are known to have had at least three children, ie James, Phoebe, and Joseph. And we have never been able to locate any of the descendants.

Court records show that Mary Jane Shackelford, daugher of George Tarleton, married John Rutherford, in Cooper County, Mo., July 24, 1842. She was born in Logan County, Ky., 1823, and was still living in 1856, but a widow at the time. They had at least four children, ie James, William, Benjamin, and Harriet. In 1856 Mary Jane Rutherford was living in Pettis County, Missouri.

Our records show that Daniel Ross was born in Kansas, Levenworth County. Date and place of his death is not known, and for a very good reason. He married Lucy Frances Shackelford, daughter of George Tarleton. She was born in Logan County, Ky., 1825, and died in Cooper County, Mo., 1882. They married July 25, 1844, and had at least five children, ie Nancy Ann, Maranda (May), Frances (Fanny), Charles William, and Minnie.

The story of Daniel Ross reminds us of a story we have of one Jerry Shackelford, who was living in Kansas during the years immediately following the war between the States. According to the story it seems that Jerry was not entirely too fond of activities known as "work." And also, it seems that he had a wife that, not being too fond of his methods of providing for his family, was rather adept at nagging.

On a certain cold night in December he was enjoying a siesta in his favorite easy chair, when the wife

3 (1079)

reminded him that the wood box was empty. So Jerry, without returning a word, donned his coat and hat and stalked from the house, and Mrs Shackelford never saw or heard of him again for five years. But five years later at about the same time of the year and the same hour of the day, Jerry returned with an arm load of fire wood. As he entered his wife remarked - "It certainly took you a long time to get an arm load of wood." Jerry never returned a word, just gave her an ominous look, turned and left the house and she never saw or heard from him again.

Apparently the same thing happened to Daniel Ross, except that nothing is said about the wood. It just happened that one morning when Mrs Ross arose her husband - Daniel Ross, was not around any more. He was never heard from again.

The children of Daniel and Lucy Frances Shackelford-Ross, married as follows:

Maranda (May)----------(married Henry Frederick Walls)

Nancy Ann---------------(married Jeff Kelly)

Frances (Fanny)----------(married Hamilton Frazier)

Charles William-----------(married Rosa McCully)

Minnie--------------------(married ??)

We have rather a complete data of the Walls family, but need more, much more of the Kelly, Frazier, and Charles W. Ross families.

We have no record of the family of William Shackelford, son of George Tarleton, other than census records. Census records show that his wife was Mary A., and that they had five children in 1860, as follows: S. E. (female), J. William, Mary, J. Benjamin, and a son born 1860, had not been named.

James Allen Shackelford, son of George Tarleton, was born in Logan County, Ky., April 26, 1833, and died in Cooper County, Mo., March 28, 1874. He was married to Margaret Ann Ware, parentage not shown, February 24, 1858. She was born in Missouri November 13, 1839, and died in Cooper County, Mo., May 2, 1875. They had nine children, ie Mary Eliza, George Tarleton, Jr., James Everett, John Granville, Addison Monroe, Ida Florence, Madora Bell, William

4 (1080)

Oscar, and Thomas Howlett.

Adolphus D. Paxton, date and place of birth not shown, but a son of Singleton Paxton and Martha J. Pettis, died in Cass County, Mo., July 9, 1901. He was twice married, his first wife being Harriet Shackelford, daugher of George Tarleton and Patsy Howard-Shackelford. She was born in Cooper County, Mo., 1835, date of death not known. They married in Cooper County, Mo., February 11, 1858. She must have died quite young, as they had but two children, ie Benjamin and Elonzo.

Adolphus D. Paxton then married for his second wife - Georgia B. Amick, no date shown, by whom he had one son - George B. Paxton. Descendants last known to be living in Cass County, and Kansas City, Missouri.

George Tarleton Shackelford then married a second time, but we have no record of the marriage, or children, if any.

The next child of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was his son Allen, of whom we have almost nothing. He was born in Warren County, Ky., in 1801, and married Eliza Reynolds, 1824. She was born in Kentucky 1805. Census records show them in Logan County, Kentucky, with eight children in 1850, but the initials, not names, of the children are shown as follows: E., female, born 1826; W., male, born 1828; J. or I., female, born 1832; J. or I., male, born 1834; A., female, born 1837; E., female, born 1841; S., male, born 1842; and W., male, born 1844. All of them born in Kentucky.

We have never been able to locate a single descendant of Allen and Eliza Reynolds-Shackelford, therefore any information additional to the above would be helpful.

The next two children of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, were James and Richard of whom we know nothing. Perhaps they died in childhood.

The next one was Merlin, of whom we have some data, but need much more. Merlin, son of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was born in Warren County, Ky., but the date is not shown. He was

5 (1081)

married to Sarah (Sally) Anderson, in Barren County, Ky., in 1823. They had at least seven children, as follows, according to the census records and marriage bonds: A daughter that married John West, in Barren County, Ky., March 9, 1849. Her name was Elizabeth, and apparently the only one that married prior to 1850. So in this record we are placing her first. Merlin Shackelford apparently died before 1850, as we find his wife or widow - Sally Anderson-Shackelford, in Barren County, Ky., 1850. Date of birth, according to census records, 1807, and with her were the following children: Sarah A., born 1833; Susan J., born 1835; James, born 1836; Allen, born 1838; and Merlin, born 1831. And in the same house were three other people - Nancy West, born 1792; Nancy West, born 1835; and Robert West, born 1828. But our records show that there was one other, and we list them as follows:

Elizabeth (Betsy)-----(married John West)

William G.-----------(married 1st Jane Anderson)

Merlin (Merl)--------(married Mary Forester)

Sarah A.-------------(married John H. Aust)

Susan J.--------------(married ??)

James H.-------------(married Susan Forester)

Allen-----------------(married Elizabeth Murphy)

Elizabeth, daughter of Merlin and Sarah Anderson-Shackelford, married John West and apparently remained in Kentucky.

The daughter Susan J., daughter of Merlin, seems to have died, as we find no record of her marriage either in Kentucky or Missouri.

All of the others moved to Miller County, Missouri, including the mother Sarah. Sarah was in Barren Co., Ky., in 1850, but in 1870 she was in Miller County, and living in the home of her son Merlin.

During our tour of 1950 we went to Tuscumbia, the County Seat of Miller County, and while there we had the pleasure of meeting several of these fine people. We learned that there were two old Family Bibles among the descendants, but as our time was so limited we did not have the time to look for them. We were promised copies however, but thus far we have never received them. But we did succeed in

6 (1082)

obtaining some of the records.

The name of the son William, son of Merlin, is shown as William G., and as William B., so we are not certain which is correct. But William, son of Merlin and Sarah Anderson-Shackelford, was born in Kentucky, probably Barren County, 1828. We do not have the date of his death, but he died in Miller County, Mo. He was twice married, his first wife being Susan Jane Anderson, whom he married in Barren County, Ky., January 5, 1852, by whom he had four children, as follows:

James Washington----(married Nancy Pinkston)

Lucinda Ellen---------(married Alex Harbison)

John Riley-------------(married Susan E. Russell)

Sarah Jane------------(married Frank Burk)

William G. Shackelford then married for his second wife - Margaret L. Stone, date of marriage not shown, but she was born in Tennessee 1828. No death date for either one. They had several children, we are not certain how many, as one record shows four, while another shows seven. So we will list the seven, as follows: William H., Luda A., John K., Benjamin D., Eva, Paralee, and Rhoda.

Merlin (Merl) Shackelford, son of Merlin and Sarah Anderson-Shackelford, was born in Kentucky, probably Barren County, in 1831. We do not have the date of the death, but he too, died in Miller Co., Missouri. Nor do we have the date of his marriage, but he evidently married late in life, as census records show that his wife was born in 1851, twenty years after he was born. Her name was Mary, and her maiden name was spelled Foster or Forester, so we are uncertain as to which is the correct way.

And although Merlin Shackelford married late in life he seems to have done alright for himself, as records show they had thirteen children, as follows: James H., Henry, Robert, Rosco, Wylie, Susan, Margaret Jane, Sarah (Sally), Ollie, John, and Ernest, and two others whose names we could not obtain. And all of them that married, married in Miller County, Missouri.

We have no dates for John Aust, but he married Sarah Ann Shackelford, daughter of Merlin and Sarah

7 (1083)

(Sally) Anderson-Shackelford, in Miller County, Mo., April 17, 1859. Probate records of Miller County, Mo., show them with only four children, as follows: Charlie, Sally Ann, Mary Jane, and Lila Bell.

James H. Shackelford, son of Merlin and Sarah Anderson-Shackelford, born in Kentucky, probably in Barren County, died in Miller County, Missouri, 1910. He married Susan Foster or Forester, July 24, 1862. They evidently had no children. She was still living in 1910.

Allen, son of Merlin and Sarah Anderson-Shackelford, was born in Kentucky, probably Barren County, 1838. No date of his death is shown. He was married to Elizabeth Murphy, in Miller County, Mo., December 25, 1870. They had at least three children, as follows: Rosa, Alice, and Charles D.

So it will be seen that our records of the descendants of Merlin Shackelford are woefully incomplete. Therefore anything additional will be profoundly appreciated.

William H. Drake, parentage and dates not shown, married Mary (Polly) Shackelford, daughter of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, in Warren Co., Kentucky, 1820. But we have never been able to determine what became of this family, as we do not have an iota of information about them. We would be profoundly grateful for any information that any person can and will pass along to us on this family.

Milton, son of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was born in Kentucky in 1808. We have no record of his death. He was married a second time, his first wife not being known, but his second wife was Elizabeth C. Cosby, whom he married in Edmonson County, Ky., September 27, 1847. Census records show that he was in Edmonson County, Ky., in 1850, with a family of nine children. But the census taker did not show names of all nine, only initials for five of them, as follows: George, born 1831; Henrietta, born 1834; M. W. (female) born 1837; H. H. (male) born 1839; Lucy, born 1841; C. W. (male) born 1843; M. E. (female) born 1845; Amanda born 1847; and

8 (1084)

M. E. (female) born 1850.

Francine, (Sinai) daughter of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, no dates shown, married David Howard, place not shown, and are said to have had four children, as follows: Samuel, Benjamin, Edaline, and one other daughter whose name is not shown. They are also said to have moved from Kentucky to Houstonia, Missouri. More information of them is very much to be desired.

Lucy Shackelford, daughter of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, married Otha Wood, Word, or Ward. We find the name spelled all three ways, so need a correction on that as well as any and all other data that can be obtained.

Wylie A. Shackelford, said to have been a son of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was in Platte County, Mo., 1850. He was evidently a widower, as no wife is shown, and he had three children, as follows: Samuel, born 1845; Thomas, born 1847; and Robert H., born 1849. All born in Mo.

Sabina, the last named child and daughter of William and Elizabeth Moore-Shackelford, was born 1814, in Warren County, Ky. No date of death is shown. She married McClung Stroud, who was born 1813, and no date of his death is shown. Census records show them in Warren County, Ky., in 1860, with nine children, as follows: Milburn, born 1837; Henrietta, born 1838; Eli, born 1840; Nancy, born 1842; Margaret, born 1845; Amos, born 1848; William, born 1849; Virginia, born 1851; and Adeline, born 1853.

McClung Stroud and all nine of his children were born in Kentucky. Thus it will be seen that we need a great deal of additional information of this Stroud family.

Next month we have some corrections to make, and will be happy to publish any record we have that is requested or to answer any question to the best of our ability.

This issue brings us up todate with publication, so there will be no more magazines after this for about two months. Don't forget the special offer of $7.00 for all twelve volumes of the magazine.

Until next month, Adios - The Editor.
