WILL OF ROGER SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen: I, Roger Shackelford of the County of King and Queen, Parish of Stratton-Major, (Colony of Virginia), being of sound and perfect memory, do make and ordain this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, viz:
I give to my grandson - John Shackelford, son of William Shackelford, deceased, one shilling sterling, to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
Then I give to my grandson - William Shackelford, son of William Shackelford, deceased, one shilling sterling, to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
I then give to my son - John Shackelford, twenty pounds.
I then give and bequeath to my daughter - Sarah Shackelford, one negro girl named Betty; to her and her heirs and assigns forever.
I then give and bequeath to my son - Roger Shackelford, two negroes namely - Angelo and Isaac; to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
I then give to my son-in-law - John Glass and his wife Betty Glass, one negro boy named Tom, during their natural life, and after their death

I then give and bequeath the said negro boy named Tom, to be sold and the money to be equally divided among the children of the said John and Betty Glass. (John Glass was a Revolutionary soldier. The Editor).
I then give and bequeath to my son Richard Shackelford, one negro boy named Edom, to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
I then give and bequeath to my two grand daughters, children of my son - James Shackelford, deceased, two negroes to wit: Doll and Lewis, to them and their heirs and assigns forever.
I then give and bequeath to my son - Robinson Shackelford, all the lands over the road, called by the name of Archers; also one negro boy named David, to and his heirs and assigns forever. Also my desire is that he may have the liberty of getting and disposing of what timber he desires out of the dragon swamp. I further desire that he may have the liberty to raise or engraft and sell my nursery of young trees, which money is to be made use of toward paying for the land I am now living on, and what money may be wanting after that, to pay for my land and other debts.
I desire my executors, hereafter named, may sell as much of my personal property and estate as will pay them, after making use of what money there is now due me; also the crops of grain that may hereafter arise, for the use of paying my just debts.
Then I lend my loving wife all the land I now live on except the land heretofore mentioned that I give to my son Robinson; to live on during her natural lifetime, she not making any waste of the timber thereon, or disposing with any from the said land only for the use of the plantation. I also lend her two negroes - old Tom and Tabb, during her natural lifetime. And I further lend her the balance of my personal estate, after which debts are paid, during her natural lifetime, and after her death I give and bequeath all the land and the two negroes - Tom and Tabb, also all the personal estate that can be found, to my son

Robinson Shackelford, to him and his heirs and assigns forever.
I further desire that the two negroes - Tom and Tabb, that I lent my wife, may not be removed off the land whereon I now live during my wife's natural life.
Lastly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my friend - Lyne Shackelford, George Lyne, Humphrey Garrett and Charles Collier, to be my executors of this my last Will and Testament.
I hereby revoke all other wills heretofore by me made in writings. Whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this day, the twenty fourth day of December, one thousand seven hundred and seventy nine. (December, 24, 1779).

The above Roger Shackelford is said to have been a son of Francis Shackelford and his wife - Sarah Virginia Lewis. He once lived in Hanover County, Va., later in Halifax County, but evidently died in King and Queen County.
His first wife was Carey Baker, who appears to have been the mother of all of his children. He married his second wife - Mrs. Drucilla Hendricks, in Halifax County, Virginia, May, 1, 1770.
Additional information of the two grand daughters - children of the deceased son James; of the families of John and Betty Glass; and of the daughter Sarah, who married Stephen Collins; and of the son Robinson, will be greatly appreciated by the Editor, and will be a valuable addition to the record.

The following is from Mill's Lettergram, of February 1947, which we believe to be well worth passing along to you. As a matter of fact, we find everything contained in "The Lettergram" well worth passing along. This item under the caption -

Ye Editor has only one living aunt, one of the kindliest and most noble of women, who fell recently and seriously injured herself, and is confined to her room, most of the time to her bid. We only have one birth to report this month, that of husky little Benny Morris, newly arrived son of Verlie Sego and Bertha May Tart-Scott, of Lexington, Tenn., who arrived on this planet January, 26, 1947. In addition to the happy parents and grand parents, he had a big two year old brother waiting for him. Mother and baby doing fine, and papa too. Congratulations to all of you from all of us.

We are reporting a marriage this month that should have been reported last month, and we here and now offer our apologies for our negligence, and it was negligence because we had the information in time.
Frances Martin, the lovely and charming daughter of Dr. John A. and Margaret D. Spencer-Shackelford of Martinsville, Va., became the happy bride of Mr. Brooks Russell Leavitt, of West Hartford, Conn. The groom being the son of Mrs. Edna Rice-Leavitt and the late Mr. V. Russell Leavitt. And since it was quite an elaborate affair we wish we had the space to give you more of the details.
So to the happy bride and groom goes our very best wishes for a long, happy and successful life together.
This month we also have an announcement of a wedding to be. Mr. And Mrs. Francis P. Wetherbee, of Albany, Ga., announce the approaching marriage of their daughter - Miss Meta Baldwin Young, to Mr. William Dyer Shackelford, son of David L. and Theresa C. Shackelford, of Miami, Florida. No date given, but at an early date.

This month we are seeking information of one Zachariah Shackelford, who was in Allen County, Ky, 1820. Census records show that both he and his wife were between 20 and 30 years of age, with one male and one female, both under five.
Marriage records of Allen County, Ky., show that one Zachariah Shackelford married Jane Finney, daughter of John Finney, July, 26, 1823.
We wish to know if the Zachariah who was in Allen County, Ky., 1820, with two children, is the same as he who married Jane Finney in 1823, Jane being his second wife?
Zachariah Shackelford and his wife - Jane Finney, are said to have lived in Warren County, Ky., for a time, then to have moved to Warren County, Mo., where they lived the balance of their lives.
They are said to have had several children, including sons - John Lafayette, Columbus C., and/or Columbus and Calloway, Irvin T., and a daughter that married a Donahou.
Both Mrs. W. W. Shackelford of Bates City, Mo., and the Editor will be grateful for any additional information as to the ancestry or descendants of the two Zachariah Shackelfords, of Allen County, Ky. The Editor will purchase or exchange information of this man or both men, as the case may be.
And this month we are again asking for more information of one Stephen Shackelford, who was born probably about 1775, and who wife was said to have been Martha, and whose children were Stephen, Jr., Paschal J., Zadock Daniel, John and Martha Ann.
Paschal J. Shackelford married Betsy Hickman, and Zadock Daniel Shackelford married Nancy Croft Hickman. Martha Ann Shackelford married Peter Robertson, and all of them married in Jefferson Co., Alabama, and some of the descendants live there yet. Information as to the ancestry and descendants will be very much appreciated.

James Shackelford was born June, 7, 1762, probably in Virginia or South Carolina, and died at Georgetown, South Carolina, October, 16, 1819. He married for his first wife - Sarah Bossard, December, 12, 1785. She was born March, 29, 1768, and died at Georgetown, South Carolina, November, 14, 1786, after having given birth to twins - a son and daughter, their names being:
James Bossard Shackelford, born November, 14, 1768.
Sarah Bossard Shackelford, born November 14, 1768.
Sarah Bossard Shackelford, died Sept, 21, 1788.
James Shackelford then married second - Elizabeth Cogdell, (dates unknown), and that was blessed with at least two children, probably others, as follows: Richard Shackelford and Hannah White Shackelford, dates not known.
James Bossard Shackelford, son of James and Sarah Bossard, died December, 26, 1866. He married Harriet Cowdrey, daughter of John and Nancy Cowdrey, December, 14, 1814. She was born April, 14, 1800, and died January, 20, 1867. They had the following children:

James Shackelford was said to have been a son of William Shackelford and his first wife - Hester Serre. James Bossard Shackelford lived in

Abbeville County, S. C. Many of his descendants live in Georgia and Florida now.
Authentic information as to ancestry of James Shackelford, or of descendants of James Bossard, Richard and Hannah White-Shackelford, will be appreciated and a valuable addition to the record.

Phillip Shackelford, son of Captain Edmund Shackelford and his wife Judith Eastin, was probably born in Orange Co., Va. He moved to Elbert County, Ga., and was living in Madison County, Ga., 1807. The name of his wife is not known, but he had several children, including a son - Edmund Charles.
Edmund Charles Shackelford, son of Phillip, was born 1807, in Madison Co., Ga. He married Rebecca Elizabeth Hunter, in Greene Co., Ga., Oct, 5, 1836. They had several children, including sons Lloyd and William Alsa. Descendants still live in Georgia and Alabama.
All additional information of the descendants of Phillip Shackelford , or the name of his wife, will be appreciated.
