Motto: A people which takes no pride in the noble achievements of remote ancestors, are not likely to achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by remote descendants.

OUR MOTHERS

Since this is the month of the year in which one day has been set aside to pay special tribute to our mothers, both past and present, this issue of the Magazine is affectionately dedicated to all Clan Mothers everywhere.

MOTHER

Of all the love that has been known,

Since time and earth began,

Of all the faith that has been shown,

Since God created man.

Of all the noble strirring deeds,

That grace the written page,

A mother's boundless love and faith,

Stands out through every age.

Her deeds have moved the sternest hearts,

To wonder and to tears,

Her love has kindled faith and trust,

Through all the changing years.

Her sacrifice, unselfishness,

Her trust through praise and blame,

Have shrined her in the hearts of all,

And glorified her name.

For though the world may frown or sneer,

Though failure may be ours,

Her love still folds, encircles us,

A rosary of flowers.

-- 2 (382) --

A comforting, sustaining force,

A star that brightly gleams;

That softens every care and hurt,

And shares our hopes and dreams.

WILL OF JOHN SHACKELFORD

In the name of God, Amen: I, John Shackelford, being of sound sence and reason but weak and afflicted in body, do make and desire this, my last Will and Testament in form following:

Item: I will unto my beloved wife -- Mary Shackelford, the land whereon I now live, with all my stock of every kind, my household and kitchen furniture, together with all my plantation tools, and utensils of every kind and all the balance of my estate, both real and personal, during her natural life in case she never marries; but if she marries I then lend her one third of my estate during her natural life.

Item: I give and bequeath to my children, after the decease or marriage of my wife, the whole of my estate, to be divided equally among them, all except my son Thomas Shackelford, who I judge, has already received his part in property that I have given him.

Lastly: I constitute and appoint Waller Lewis, whole and sole executor of this my last Will and Testament, revoking all will or wills heretofore made by me.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the seventh day of April, in the year one thousand eight hundred. (April 7, 1800).

Signed -- John Shackelford.

A. Waller, Davis Lively, Thomas Dillard, witnesses. Will Book F,page 120, Spottsylvania Co.,Va.

John Shackelford died before 1803, for we find the following instrument: Mary A., Zachariah, James B., Richard, Nancy, Peggy, and Daniel Shackelford, signed a deed for their share of

-- 3 (383) --

their father, John Shackelford's estate, to John, John Shackelford, their brother (note from the transcriber: the preceding sentence is confusing, but it is an accurate transcription of the original Shackelford Clan Magazine). Deed Book Q, page 240, dated July 13, 1803. Spottsylvania County, Va.

Records in our possession show that this John Shackelford was twice married, his first wife being Rebecca Warren, daughter of Samuel Warren; to which union was born one son-- Thomas Shackelford, mentioned in the will of John.

His second wife was Mary Mason, daughter of John Mason and his wife -- Ann Roy.

In addition to the heirs mentioned in the will and in the sale of land by the other heirs, Mrs Jennie T. Grayson says there was also a son Lewis. But we have no documentary proof of this. And of course would be forever grateful if some one can confirm this one way or the other.

WILL OF CLARISSA SHACKELFORD

In the name of God, Amen: I, Clarissa Shackleford, being weak and feeble in body but of sound mind and disposing memory, do make this last Will and Testament in words following: that is to say -- I desire after my decease that my executor hereinafter mentioned, shall make sale of my property or so much thereof, as will satisfy my just debts.

Item: I give and bequeath to my grand daughter -- Ann Eliza Anderson, my loom and weaving apparatus and spinning wheel.

Item: I give and bequeath to Susan Anderson, the seven hogs which she already has in her possession. The remainder of my property or proceeds thereof, shall be equally divided between my grand children: Ann Eliza Anderson, Clarissa Shackelford, Aggy Shackelford, Strother Shackelford, Richard Shackelford, and Thomas Shackelford.

I hereby appoint James E. Waller, my executor to this my last Will, and request that he will qualify and that he may not be required to give any security.

Given under my hand and seal this 27th day of April 1847. Signed -- Clarissa Shackelford, by mark.

Hawkins Stone, James E. Waller, and Ann Eliza

-- 4 (384) --

Anderson, witnesses. Probated May 1847. Deed Book OO, page 259, Stafford County, Virginia.

There is nothing in the records of Stafford Co., Va., to indicate just who Clarissa Shackelford was. Therefore we would be happy to have all the additional information of this family as possible.

Right here we would like to say, that the next several numbers of the Magazine may be coming to you much earlier than you expect them. We hope to be able to make another tour of research some time this year, and would like to be ahead with our issues of the Magazine so that we will not be so far in arrears when we return. And we hope you will understand.

--------------------

We are happy to welcome the following new subscribers into the Clan family: Mr W. G. Shackelford, of Vienna, W. Va.; and Mrs R. V. Blair, of Nashville, Tennessee - both of whom included an order for all back issues.

-- 5 (385) --

We have two brand new members of the Clan to report this month, both reports being sent in by Mrs J. B. Shackelford, of Jones, La. And both new members are of the sugar and spice and everything nice variety.

Buxom little Rebecca Bland, a charming little lady from the heavenly realm put in her appearance Feb. 3, 1949, and will henceforth make her home with the proud parents -- Mr and Mrs Louis Craig and Frances Wilson Devany-Shackelford, of Montrose, Ark. The proud paternal grand parents are the J. B. Shackelfords, of Jones, La.

Then Feb. 24, 1949, Lieutenant and Mrs David Seale Shackelford, Jr., became the proud parents of another little lady from Eden's shores, who will bear the name of Stephanie. Lt. Shackelford is at present with the Army Air Corps, in Germany. Mrs Shackelford is the former Miss Helen Ann Wilcox. Stephanie is the second daughter of Lt. and Mrs Shackelford, and the other one was born while Lt. Shackelford was en route to Korea with the Army Air Forces. The proud paternal grand parents are the David Seale Shackelfords, Sr., of Yazoo City, Mississippi. Sincere congratulations and best wishes to both families.

--------------------

That little elf -- Dan Cupid, seems to be working over time of late, as we have three marriages or approaching marriages to announce this month.

Miss Virginia Jenkins, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs M. G. Jenkins, of Birmingham, Ala., will become the bride of Jesse Shackelford, also of Birmingham, Ala., April 18, 1949. No further details of the approaching marriage were shown.

Miss Jeannette Pauline Shackelford, lovely daughter of Mr and Mrs Warren Felton and Mayme Nolan-Shackelford, of Atlanta, Ga., became the bride of Mr James Milton Tingle, son of Mr and Mrs James S. Tingle, of Hapeville, Ga., recently (date not shown). After a brief honeymoon the happy young couple [will] be at home in Hapeville, Ga.

Another approaching marriage that will be of interest to a great many members of the Clan was

-- 6 (386) --

announced recently. Dr. & Mrs Bernard Leonidas Shackleford, of Atlanta, Ga., announce the approaching marriage of their lovely and talented daughter Winnifred Patricia, to Cadet Gilbert Zavier Cheves, Jr., son of General and Mrs Gilbert Zavier Cheves, Sr. The happy event to be June 28, 1949.

This is a very prominent young couple, of whom we shall be happy to tell you more when we tell you of the wedding.

Sincere congratulations and best wishes to all of you. May you always be as happy as you are at this very moment.

--------------------

No doubt there has been some deaths among the Clan this past month, but if there has we have not been informed of them. We wish it were possible that we would never have to report a death, but since they have to be, we will always be grateful if you will pass the information along to us.

PERSONALS

Miss Ora Tanquary, of Van Wert, Ohio, has completed her ancestral charts containing her line of descent from Roger Shackelford, the immigrant, and his wife -- Mary Palmer; and also from Zachary Lewis, another ancestor, and has donated them to The Library, of The Daughters of the American Revolution, Washington, D.C.

This is a very generous gesture on the part of Miss Tanquary, as she has spent much time and money in the compilation of this data. And we feel certain that those interested in those two lines will be grateful to learn of this. Congratulations Miss Tanquary.

--------------------

John Shackelford, whose will appears on page two of this issue of the Magazine, was a son of James Shackelford, Jr., and his wife Elizabeth Lewis. He was born about 1745, and records in our possession show that he died Jan. 4, 1801. But this date

-- 7 (387) --

of death must be in error, since his estate was disposed of by his heirs in 1803. So the date of his death in all probably, was Jan. 4, 1803.

John Shackelford was twice married, his first wife being Rebecca Warren, daughter of Samuel Warren, by whom he had one son -- Thomas Shackelford.

He then married Mary Mason, daughter of John Mason and his wife -- Ann Roy, to which union were born at least eight children, and perhaps nine. The known children were as follows:

John--------------------(married Ann Dillard ??)

Mary A.----------------(no further record)

Zachariah---------------(married 1st Susan Gilmer, married 2nd -- Sarah Christie Cave)

James Baylor-----------(married Mary Tiffin)

Richard-----------------(no further record)

Nancy------------------(no further record)

Daniel------------------(married Patsy Carr)

Margaret (Peggy)-------(never married, died at age 90)

Lewis ?? ---------------(married Elizabeth ??)

--------------------

As stated before, it is not certain if the last named son -- Lewis, is really a son. Mrs Grayson says that he is, but offers no documentary proof.

Following are records of Shackelfords in Spottsylvania County, Va., some of them descendants of John, orthers presumed to be.

Thomas Shackelford married Mildred Ann Flagg, November 3, 1806.

Richard Shackelford married Sarah Johnson, October 8, 1808. Both of these marriages in Spottsylvania County, Virginia.

It is known that John, Jr., Zachariah and Daniel Shackelford, sons of John Shackelford and Mary Mason, remained in Virginia. James Baylor Shackelford first went to Tennessee, and later to Fayette County, Ohio, and still later to Indiana. He married Mary Tiffin in Tennessee.

Also in Fayette Co., Ohio, was one Lewis Shackelford, whose wife was Elizabeth. Was he a brother to James Baylor? We would like to know if any one can help us on this. We would also like to know who the daughters -- Mary A., and Nancy married.

In 1836 Jemima Cox conveyed slaves, one slave, and two children to Dudley Shackelford, Jr., in consideration that Dudley Shackelford maintain Jemima Cox for the balance of her life -- Deed Book LL, page 38.

WILL OF LUCRETIA SHACKELFORD

I, Lucretia Shackelford, do make this my last Will and Testament. I do give and bequeath to the children of my husband -- Dudley Shackelford, all estate, real, personal and mixed, to which I might be entitled at my death -- the said children taking share and share alike; and if any of them be dead leaving children, such children shall be entitled to the portion of their deceased parent. But this devise is upon the stipulation that if my said husband shall survive me he shall enjoy the use of all the said property during his life, and the distribution amongst his children shall not be until after his death.

Witness my hand this the 10th day of June 1858.

Sig -- Lucretia Shackelford.
