MOTHERS
This being the month of May, the month wherein we have set aside one day in which to pay special tribute to our mothers, we affectionately dedicate this issue of the Magazine to mothers everywhere in general, and Clan mothers in particular.
The world is a marvelous spinning top,
Of great affairs that never stop.
Broad as the nations, it narrows down,
To the little streets of a friendly town;
Uncles and Aunts and sisters and brothers,
To the tempered point that it spins on -- Mothers.

This month marks the beginning of the sixth year of the life of our little leaflet. And we have enjoyed sending it to you. Your response and co-operation has been marvelous. We are grateful beyond our ability to express, to each of you; and before this year has gone we hope to be able to thank many of you in person for the part that you have contributed in making its success possible. And to those of you that we will not be able to see, we take this method and opportunity to thank each of you again.

WILL OF JOHN SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen:
The twenty second day of April, in the year of our

Lord God, one thousand seven hundred and seventy eight. I, John Shackelford, of North Carolina, in the County of Onslow, being in perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God: therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body, knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, I make and ordain this my last Will and Testament. That is to say principally and first of all: I give and recommend my soul unto the hand of God that gave it; and my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my executors, nothing doubting but that at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give and bequeath and dispose of the same in the following manner and form:
Imprimis: I lend unto my loving wife -- Ann Shackelford, during her natural life, two negro men and one negro woman, namely -- Jack, Narow, and Tamer; and after her decease, to be disposed of as hereinafter mentioned.
Item: I give unto my loving son -- William Shackelford, one negro girl, named Rachel.
Item: I give unto my loving son -- Francis Shackelford, one negro woman, named Hagar; also one negro girl, named Alee; also one negro girl, named Fillis; also one negro boy, named Sesor; and one negro girl, named Marea.
Item: I give unto my loving son -- John Shackelford, one negro woman, named Susey; also one negro girl, named Cloe; also one negro boy, named David; and after the decease of my wife -- Ann Shackelford, I leave to my son John, one negro man, named Jack.
Item: I give to my two grandsons -- Benjamin Williams and John Williams, ten shillings each, to be paid out of my estate.
Item: I give to Stephen Williams and Jessey Ballard, five shillings each.
Item: I give to my loving daughter -- Ann Williams, one negro girl, named Dinah.
Item: I give unto my loving son -- Stephen Shackelford, one negro girl, named Phebe; also one negro

boy, named Sam; also one negro girl, named Hannah, and after the decease of my wife -- Ann Shackelford, I give my son -- Stephen Shackelford, one negro man, named Narow.
Item: I give unto my loving son -- George Shackelford, one negro boy, named Joe; also one negro girl, named Jenny, and one negro child, named Jack; and after the decease of my wife -- Ann Shackelford, I give to my son George, one negro woman named Tamer.
I leave my griss mill and saw mill, with two acres of land adjoining thereto, with all appurtenances belonging thereto, likewise all the land that I possess in Duplin County, also one negro woman, named Bier, to pay all the just debts, and if there be anything remaining, it is to be divided amongst my sons.
I leave my loving sons -- William Shackelford and Francis Shackelford, full and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament; hereby revoking, disanuling and making void all former wills and bequests by me made; and declaring this only to be my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal:

John Shackelford, whose will you will see on page one to three, this issue, was born probably in Essex County, Va., April 9, 1712. He died in Onslow County, N. C., April 23, 1778. He was a son of Francis and Sarah Lewis-Shackelford, and he married Ann ? (maiden name unknown), December 31, 1730.
Ann, wife of John Shackelford, was born March 10, 1714, and she died April 6, 1782.
It will be noted that John Shackelford mentioned only six children. But his family record found in

his old Bible we find that they had eleven children, as follows:

Of the above children of John and Ann Shackelford, we have data known to be of the descendants of only Francis, Stephen, and George. We have other data we shall mention later, but we have no data of the descendants of Easter, Sarah, John, Frances, Mary Ann, or the child whose name was obliterated, and so would be very grateful for whatever any one might contribute for or about them.
One William Shackelford, whose wife was Elizabeth, had the following children:

Easter Shackelford, eldest daughter of John and Ann Shackelford, was born Dec. 30, 1734. She died April 6, 1761. She is said to have married Stephen Williams, and to have had at least two children, ie:

Sarah Shackelford, second daughter of John and Ann Shackelford, was born May 2, 1737. She died February 5, 1756, and is said to have married Lott Williams, and to have had at least two children, as follows:

Mary Ann, fourth daughter of John and Ann Shackelford, born May 13, 1749, and is said to have married William Williams. However we have no kind of proof whatever for this claim.
Francis Shackelford, second son of John and Ann Shackelford, was born March 18, 1739. Died in Marion S. C., May 5, 1823. He married Rebecca Ballard, daughter of John and Mary Ballard, (date of marriage not shown), and they had at least six children, ie:

Rebecca Ballard Shackelford, was born August 19, 1738. She died May 15, 1818.
Of the descendants of Francis and Rebecca Ballard-Shackelford, we have almost a complete data of those of George and Mary -- their son and daughter.
Rev Franklin S. Moseley, in his book "George Shackelford-Annette Jeter, and Descendants", says that George Shackelford, son of Francis and Rebecca, and two of his brothers came into the northern section of Alabama about 1818, and there they separated. George went on down to Montgomery County, where he married, reared a large family and died there. He never heard from his two brothers again after he was separated from them in northern Alabama.
He had only three brothers, and if the Francis who died July 21, 1805, was his brother, then we know that the two brothers who came with him were Daniel and Willoughby. And therefore we are particularly desirous of learning something of the descendants of these two men. Could either of them be the ancestor of the Shackelfords who settled at or near Birmingham, Alabama, about the same time that he, George, went to Montgomery County? All help on this problem will be greatly appreciated.

It will be noted that William and Elizabeth Shackelford had a son Willoughby, and that Francis and Rebecca Ballard-Shackelford, had a son Willoughby. There was one Willoughby Shackelford in Wayne Co., North Carolina, at one time. Was he one of these?

We have three brand new members of the Clan to report this month.
Sarah Kirsten, charming little cherub from the heavenly realm, put in her appearance Dec. 18, 1949, and will henceforth bless the home of Mr and Mrs Charles Barry and Sarah Jacqueline Geesling-Neill, Jr., of Atlanta, Georgia.
Then working in double shifts, old man Stork made a stop at the home of Mr and Mrs Hulon A. and

Virginia Lee Scott-Renshaw, of Lexington, Tenn., on the very same date as above, Dec. 18, 1949, and left them a lusty little son, the new heir here to be known as Toney Hugh.
Then he [flew] back to Georgia in double quick order and delivered another charming little daughter at the home of Mr and Mrs William Burnette and Lois Jean Geesling-Hill, of Forsythe, Ga., January 5, 1950. And she will be known as Dynva Bilean.
Our sincere and warmest congratulations to all parents and babies.

The sad section of our little leaflet contains but one death this time.
Tessa May Hagler, of Bethany, Mo., was born the daughter of Simon and Mary Frances Nelson-Shackelford, Jan. 29. 1883, in Harrison County, Mo. She departed from the sorrows and strife of this world at her home at Bethany, Mo., Feb. 3, 1950, after having spent her entire life in Harrison County, Mo.
She was married to Marion Hagler, Feb. 16, 1902, to which union were born five children, two sons, three daughters, all of whom survive. She is also survived by three brothers, one sister and seven grand children. Her husband preceded her in death May 27, 1941.
And on behalf of the entire Clan we extend our deepest and most profound sympathy, and offer our consolation of hope to all the bereaved. May the Lord comfort each of you.

And now we wish to tell you something regarding our proposed tour of research that we are planning for later this year. It is our plans now to get away from here in about sixty days for the most extensive and comprehensive tour that we have ever made. We will probably be away for the balance of this year; and when we return we hope to be able to answer any question regarding the ancestry of any Shackelford-Shackleford, or descendant thereof. And also to

answer most questions regarding their descendants.
And since this tour is to be rather expensive we could use some financial assistance. But please understand us, we have never asked for contributions in this work, and we are not asking for them now. We are going to cover a great deal of territory and while we are looking for Shackelford information we could, with but very little additional time and effort, look for information of other lines too. So if you have genealogical problems of any of your other lines that you feel I could help you on, and wish me to do so, I will be happy to accept the task and responsibility. We will not however, make detours of any appreciable distance from our regular itinerary in order to do such work. It must be remembered that our tour is for the purpose of seeking Shackelford-Shackleford genealogy, and any other work must be in conjunction with that.
It is our plans now to work through Missouri, beginning at Kansas City, working several counties north and south of a line from Kansas City to St Louis. Then into Kentucky for work there in the major portion of the western part of the State. Then from Kentucky into Ohio, with possibly a little West Virginia for several days, and then about two or three months in Virginia and Washington, D. C. And when the weather begins to get cold we plan to work south into the Carolinas and back home through Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
So should any of you have problems of a genealogical nature in any of the above mentioned places, and will let us have your order, we will be only too happy to do the very best we can for you.
The June Magazine will follow this one in a very few days. But since there is no one to carry on for us while we are away there will be no Magazines after the June issue until we return. However, all BACK NUMBERS WILL be made up as soon as we can get them out, after our return.
