Will of John Shackelford.
In the name of God: Amen.
I, John Shackelford, formerly of the County of Clay, but now living in Clinton County, and State of Missouri, being of sound mind, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last Will and testament: That is to say--First: I commend my spirit to God who gave it, and desire that at my decease that my body be decently buried; and after my lawful debts are paid and discharged, the residue of my estate, real and personal, I give, bequeath and dispose of as follows--towit: To Hiram J. Rowell, for his attendance on me to the Hot Springs in Arkansas during the fall of 1858, I Will and bequeath eighty dollars to be paid to him by my Executor as soon as circumstances will permit. And the residue of my property I Will and bequeath to my brothers and sisters as follows: To my sister Sarah, wife of Washington Huffaker, and to my brothers Ryland and James, I constitute a full heir in my estate.
And the following heirs of my sister Nancy--towit: Minerva Huffaker, Aranilda Smith, James S. Bartee and Margaret Bush, as one full heir in my estate., excepting as hereinafter bequeathed, to be divided equally between my heirs, share and share alike.
To my sister Rebecca I Will and bequeath one

dollar, to be paid to her by my Executor.
Likewise, I make, constitute and appoint Washington Huffaker, to be my Executor of this, my last Will and testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this the eighth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and fifty nine. (April 8th, 1859)

The above mentioned John Shackelford, was a son of James Shackelford, of Clay County, Mo., whose Will we gave you in the January issue. This John Shackelford died May 24th, 1859, age sixty one years, eight months and twenty three days. He seems to have been the eldest child of James Shackelford.
This John evidently never married, as it will be noted that he mentioned no wife or children, but left his property to his brothers, sisters and the children of his sister Nancy Shackelford-Bartee.
We give you this Will because here we find four of the children of Nancy Shackelford-Bartee, mentioned, which is the only record that we have been able to find that mentions any of that family.
And since we now know that Nancy Shackelford-Bartee had Minerva, (married a Huffaker) Aranilda, (married a Smith) and Margaret, (married a Bush) as well as a son James S. Bartee., we would be very grateful for additional information of these families.

Will of Ryland Shackelford.
I, Ryland Shackelford, of the County of Clay, in the State of Missouri, being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do make, ordain, publish and declare this, to be my last Will and testament;

that is to say: After all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, the residue of my estate, real and personal, I give and dispose of as follows--towit: Whereas, I have given unto some of my heirs as an advancement the following amounts, which amount is to be accounted for in my estate according to the amounts hereafter specified, and then each one of my heirs is to share equally in my estate--towit: My daughter Cassandra Clark, four hundred dollars.; To my daughter Rebecca Hamilton, six hundred and fifty dollars.; To my daughter Lucretia Hamilton, one hundred and fifty dollars.; To my daughter Maggie Jacobs, five hundred dollars.; To my three youngest children--towit: Paulina Shackelford, Emma Shackelford and Robert O. Shackelford, to have a full share without any deduction.
I also give unto Hagar, a black girl I have raised, one hundred dollars.
Likewise I make, constitute and appoint my son John M. Shackelford, to be my Executor of this my last Will and testament, hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.
Also I give my Executor full power to sell all my real estate, either at public sale or privately, as he may think best for the interest of the heirs, and to make a general warrantee deed to said real estate.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal, this the tenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and seventy three. (Feb 10th, 1873)

The above instrument was subscribed by the said Ryland Shackelford, in our presence, and acknowledged by him to each of us, and he, at the said time published and declared the above instrument subscribed to, tobe the last Will and testament; and we as the testators requested, and in his presence have signed our names as witnesses.

Ryland Shackelford, son of James, was born, according to census records, in Kentucky in 1805. And as will be seen by the probation of his Will, he died in Clay County, Mo., 1874. His wife was Alice, but her maiden name is not known. She too, was born in Kentucky, in 1814. She died Oct 10th, 1865, at the age of 51 years, in Clay County, Mo. Ryland and Alice Shackelford are known to have had at least nine children, although he does not mention that many in his Will. Some of them must have died in early childhood. Their children are as follows:

We would be particularly happy to have additional information of the descendants of Ryland and Alice Shackelford. Samuel Clark moved to DeKalb County, Mo. John M. Shackelford moved to Ray County, Mo. As did Dr Harrison P. Jacobs. But we found nothing that would show the names of their children.

This month we will catch up on our family news, and we begin here by reporting the arrival of new members of the clan. But please keep up the good work of reporting all births, marriages and deaths.
Donna Lynn, a buxom little cherub, arrived on this orb November 15th, 1950, (her great grandmother's birthday) and will henceforth abide with the happy

parents, Mr and Mrs Underwood and Velma Estell-Shackelford-Middleton, of Ypsilanti, Mich.
Nancy, another little cherub of the sugar and spice and everything nice variety, arrived at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Jack Dean and Fern May Lindenberg-Roodcap, of Atlanta, Ga., May 25th, 1950. The Roodcaps formerly of Kansas City, Mo.
John Anthony, a lusty baby son arrived in this war infested world June 21st, 1950, and will henceforth call Mr and Mrs Richard Addison and Hester Ann Reill-Wald, of Portland, Oregon, papa and mama.
Congratulations to each of the happy parents and fortunate babies.
Mr and Mrs John DePalma, of Los Angeles, Calif., announced the marriage of their daughter Alice Darlene, to Mr Ralph Pierson, son of Mr and Mrs Granville H. and Sylvia Tolman-Pierson, August 20th, 1950. The nuptials at Yuma, Arizona.
Miss Helen Janice Franks, lovely daughter of Mr and Mrs R. O. Franks, of Columbus, Miss., became the happy bride of Mr James Lloyd Shackelford, son of Mr and Mrs Murray Lloyd and Lilly Fields Shackelford, also of Columbus, Miss., September 10th, 1950.
Miss Madelyn Virginia Omstead, beautiful daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Cecil and Bertha Martin-Omstead, of Eagleville, Mo., became the bride of Mr Bill Lacy, also of Eagleville, Mo., November 17th, 1950. The nuptials at Des Moines, Iowa.
Another wedding in the same family when Miss Clara Nadine Baker, of Bethany, Mo., became the charming bride of Mr Cecil Duane Omstead, son of Mr and Mrs Edward Cecil and Bertha Martin-Omstead, of Eagleville, Mo., December 3rd, 1950.
All the weddings reported in this and the January issues of the magazine were very elaborate affairs, and we regret that we do not have the space to give you more of the details, but that is out of the question.
And on behalf of the entire clan we extend sincere congratulations and best wishes to each of you. We hope you will always be as happy as you are now.
Johnnie B. Mullins, was born the daughter of John Tyler and Fatima Ann Shackelford-Stone, near Tyler, Texas, January 22nd, 1884. And she passed to her eternal reward July 1949, at her home near Tyler, Texas.
She was married to Mr Julius Mullins, December 12th, 1909., and to this union were born four children, two sons and two daughters. Our correspondent did not inform us of any more of the details.
And now it is our sad duty to report the death of Mr Frank L. Shackleford, of Elizabeth N.J., on July 29th, 1950., which was a distinct shock to us.
We know very little of this family except that we had some very interesting correspondence with Mr Shackleford. And there is an unusual story that goes along with this branch of the family.
Mr Frank L. Shackleford, (he spells it with the "le") was a son of Jeremiah Shackleford, one of the Georgia clan. And it seems that as soon as the war between the States was over Mr Jeremiah Shackleford left his native Georgia and never returned. And the son Frank L., was born in New Jersey, along with his sisters. We believe he told us that he had no brothers.
As before stated, we had some very interesting correspondence with Mr Shackleford, and he had promised us a complete data of his branch of the family as soon as we returned from our recent tour. But now comes the sad news that he died in July.
Mrs Shackleford was kind enough to send us some of the data, but much of the details are lacking. But we are grateful to her never the less.
So we hereby express our deepest sympathy to each of the bereaved in their hours of sorrow. May the Lord bless and comfort them.

On page 4 we made the statement that we found nothing that would indicate the names of the children of Cassandra Clark and John M. Shackelford, daughter and son of Ryland Shackelford and Alice. But after a bit of re-checking of our notes we do find that we have one item concerning John M.
John M. Shackelford married in Ray County, Mo.

He married Elizabeth (Betty) Crowley, April 21st, 1874. And then he died in February 1875, less than a year after his marriage. He left no Will, and in the settlement of his estate no children were mentioned. But the following were mentioned as heirs:
Elizabeth (Betty), his widow.; Cassandra Clark, wife of Samuel P. Clark, sister.; Emma Shackelford, Lou Hamilton, Maggie Jacobs and Paulina Shackelford, all sisters.; and Robert O. Shackelford, a brother. Also Rebecca Hamilton a niece.; Ryland, Matthew and Edward Hamilton, nephews. Evidently the four last named were children of Walter C. Hamilton and his wife Lucretia Shackelford, mentioned above as Lou.
That completes, for this time at least, information we found on the Shackelfords of Clay County, Missouri. And we would be most happy to have additional information of any of the families mentioned.
In your December magazine, pages 6, 7, and 8, we gave you a copy of the Will of one John Shackelford, of Ray County, Mo. In that Will he mentioned nine children. Those mentioned of course, included only those living when he made his Will. There seems to have been two or three others. The others perhaps died small, or at least before his Will was dated. Census records show him and his wife Malinda H. with the following children:

Of the above named twelve children, John, Jr., William and Caroline, were not mentioned in his Will, so evidently died before 1857. All the above children were born between 1822 and 1846. But each

of the twelve mentioned were in the home of John and Malinda H., at one time or another.
Also in Ray County, Mo., in 1838, was one Daniel Shackelford, whose wife was Tabitha. This Daniel Shackelford married Tabitha Nance, in Henry County Virginia, October 29th, 1798. And he was a son of Henry and Mary Shackelford, who died in Henry Co, Va., 1806. Henry and Mary Shackelford, of Henry Co, Va., had the following children: Susannah, John, William, James, Daniel, Samuel and Henry. We are not certain that the above is the order of birth, but those were the daughter and sons of Henry.
Now since the son of Daniel was in Ray County, Mo., 1838, we would like to know if the John, whom we are now discussing, was of the same branch of the family? He was not a son of Daniel unless Daniel was married a second time. Daniel was married 1798, and this John was born 1795.
But Daniel had a brother John who died in Henry County, Va., 1815., and he had a son John. Query? Could the John in Ray County, Mo., be the son of John, of Henry County, Va? Should any one be able to confirm this one way or another we will be forever grateful.
The most confusing item that we found in Ray and Clay Counties, Mo., or any other place, concerns one James H. Shackelford. The first item we find of James H. Shackelford is a deed record. He, along with his wife Eveline, sold land to Thomas Hightower, both of Ray County, February 21st, 1853. Deed Book H, page 209. Eveline was still his wife in 1856. Deed Book K, page 229.
Another Item shows that James H. Shackelford sold his interest in the estate of his wife Elvira, property she had inherited from her father Jesse Esrey., November 30th, 1860. Deed Book Q, page 25.
But again we find that Eveline was his wife in 1862. Deed Book R, page 11.
In 1868 the wife of James H. Shackelford was named Nancy. Deed Book Y, page 470. All the above deed references in Ray County, Missouri.
