OUR TOUR FOR 1950
In your May Magazine you will see the outline of our proposed tour and itinerary for our 1950 foray. It will be found on pages seven and eight. We are making mention of it here so that you will be sure to take note of it.

John Shackelford, son of Roger the immigrant (see your Shackelford Clan Magazine for November 1945) moved from Essex County, Va., to Bath County, later it was Carteret County, N. C., about 1712/13. His wife was Ann, probably Ann Livingston. He died in Carteret County, 1734. And in his will he named two sons, and seems to have had five daughters, namely:

WILL OF JOHN SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen: I, John Shackelford, of North River, Core Sound, Carteret County, in North Carolina, planter, being sick and weak in body, but in sound mind and memory, do make and ordain this as my last Will and Testament in manner and

form following: That is to say first and principally: I commend my soul unto the hands of Almighty God, hoping through the merits and passions of my Savior -- Jesus Christ, to have full and final pardon and forgiveness of my sins, and to inherit everlasting life. And my body I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executor hereinafter named.
And in touching such worldly estate as it hath please God to bestow upon me, I give and bequeath in manner and form following:
Imprimis: I will that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and fully satisfied.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Mary Morse, daughter of Joseph Morse and Blandina Morse, one negro girl -- called Jenny, and her increase, to the afore said Mary Morse at her marriage, or at the age of sixteen years, or sooner if her father - Joseph Morse or his heirs and assigns shall see convenient.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Elizabeth Morse, daughter of Joseph Morse, and Blandina Morse, her heirs and assigns forever, one negro boy -- called Tom, to be delivered to her at her marriage or at the age of sixteen years, or sooner if her father -- Joseph Morse shall see convenient.
Item: I give and bequeath unto Daniel Morse, son of Joseph Morse and Blandina Morse, his heirs and assigns forever, one negro boy -- called Abram, to be delivered to the aforesaid Daniel Morse or his heirs and assigns, at the age of twenty one years, or sooner if his father - Joseph Morse, shall see convenient. And if my negro Sall, mother of the aforesaid negro children, should have a negro child next after the date of this will, that such negro child whether male or female, I give and bequeath unto Sarah Morse, daughter of Joseph Morse and Blandina Morse, her heirs and assigns forever, to be delivered to her at her marriage, or at the age of sixteen years, or sooner if her father- Joseph Morse, his heirs or assigns shall see convenient.
Item: I will and bequeath unto my loving nephew

Joseph Morse, son of Joseph Morse and his wife - Sarah, one negro woman -- called Sall, and her increase; to him and his heirs and assigns forever, one one negro boy -- called Toney, the plantation whereon I now live, with my dwelling house and all the appurtenances thereunto belonging, and all my real and personal estate wheresoever to be found. Also one negro man -- called Cato; to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my cousin -- James Shackelford, son to my brother James Shackelford, deceased, one cow and calf, to him, his heirs and assigns forever.
Lastly: I ordain and constitute my loving nephew Joseph Morse aforesaid, executor to this my last Will and Testament, and I do anul and make void all former wills and testaments by me made, and do acknowledge this to be my last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the fifteenth day of March, in the year of our Lord -- one thousand seven hundred and seventy one (March 15, 1771).
Signed, sealed, published and pronounced by the said John Shackelford, and his last Will and Testament in the presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names.

The above John Shackelford, was a son of John and Ann Shackelford, mentioned on page one.
And while we feel that we understand this instrument, it can be a bit confusing. For example:
John Shackelford mentions Mary, Elizabeth, Daniel, and Sarah Morse, all children of Joseph and Blandina Morse. Then he mentions Joseph Morse as his nephew, and this Joseph is a son of Joseph and Sarah Morse. Therefore as we understand it, Joseph Morse, the elder, married Sarah Shackelford, the sister of

John, and his nephew Joseph, was their son. Then all the children mentioned in the Will were son and daughters of Joseph the nephew, and his wife Blandina. Some records show that this is Joseph Moss -- not Morse; but in the original instrument it is very clearly written as "Morse."
Therefore we would be happy to have additional information of the above named Morse children's descendants, as well as other descendants of John and Ann Shackelford.

Not so much family news this month since we are running this issue out so soon after the May number. But we do have some, and what we do have is very fine indeed, other than the passing of the three members of the Clan.
We are happy to welcome Mr Joseph G. Nooner, of Enola, Ark.; Mr Joseph R. Shackelford, of Belton, S. C.; and Mrs Weyant E. Morris, of Elburn, Ill., as new subscribers. And to acknowledge subscription renewals from Mrs R. M. Tichenor, of Scotch Plains, N. J.; and Mrs Vernon E. McArthur of Hutchinson, Kansas. To all of whom we say again "Many Thanks."
We also wish to acknowledge additional data from the following: Mr J. R. Johnson, of Lexington, Ky.; Mrs Ira J. Seitz, of Fresno, Calif.; Mr Maynard L. Richardson, of Franklin, Ind.; Mrs M. A. Smyly, of Axis, Ala.; Mr Joseph R. Shackelford, of Belton S. C.; Mrs R. M. Tichenor, of Scotch Plains, N. J.; Miss Elizabeth Shackelford, of Indianapolis, Ind.; Dr John A. Shackelford, of Martinsville, Va.; and to Mrs Hallie R. Finley, go the orchids this month, for one of the most beautiful records that has so far come to our attention. The record is a photostat of an original, written in old English lettering, by Edmund Shackelford, Jr., son of Capt Edmund Shackelford, and gives a complete record of the births of all the children of Capt Edmund, and presented to his mother. Mrs Finley, who contributed this record, lives in St Petersburg, Florida.

We have no births or marriages to report this month, but sad to say, the report of the passing of three of our number, has reached us since we made up our copy.
Mrs Ira Price Tippett-Ackerman, was born the daughter of Alexander Ray and Sarah Jane Pritchett-Tippett, September 1, 1876. She died recently, no date was given. She was married to William Ackerman about 1800, and to that union was born one son, who died in early childhood. No other details were given regarding the death of Mrs Ackerman. She was a descendant of Zachariah and Dolly Embree-Shackelford, of Orange Co., Va., and Casey Co., Kentucky.
Mrs Mary E. Atchison, of Lexington, Ky., age 83 years, was born the daughter of Woodson Bryan and Mildred E. Darnaby. She was married to Robert S. Atchison, but we do not have the record of this family. She died Feb. 28, 1950. And she is survived by her husband, one daughter, and two grand children; also a host of other relatives and friends. We regret that we do not have a record of this family, but we can say that she is a descendant of William and Diana Shackelford-Darnaby.
Mrs Cora Shackelford-Russell, wife of Mr Sam Russell, of Fayette County, Ky., died at her home March 4, 1950, at the age of 78 years. She was removed to Jackson, in Breathitt Co., Ky., for interment. We regret we do not have a record of this family either, but we can say that she descends from Abner Terry and Nancy Gossett-Shackelford, formerly of Adair County, Ky. To all of whom we extend our deepest sympathy and consolation of hope to Him who does all things well.

In our May issue we began our investigation of the descendants of John Shackelford, who died in Onslow County, N. C. in 1778. We mentioned his children down to and including his son Francis, who married Rebecca Ballard, and his next son was John, of whom we know nothing

more. He was born June 4, 1745, and died November, 1781. Did he ever marry? and if so, what became of his family?
The next son was Stephen, whose wife was Susannah (see Shackelford Clan Magazine for January 1948). But we lack information of his descendants.
The last named son and child was George, born Jan. 19, 1759, and died in 1802. He was a soldier of the Revolution, and he married Mary (Polly) Shine, daughter of Daniel and Barbara Franck-Shine. They had the following children:

Francis, the last named child of George and Mary (Polly) Shine, is questionable. We have a record showing him as their son, while other records omit his name. We would greatly appreciate knowing if there was a son Francis.

On page one of this issue will be found the names of the children of John and Ann Shackelford, who died in Carteret County, North Carolina, 1734. So let us consider that family now.
John, the first mentioned son, whose will is to be found in this issue, apparently never married, as he mentions neither wife or children.
James, the second named son, married Keziah or Hezia Wickers (our records show Keziah) but her will it is recorded Hezia. In later issues of the Magazine we will give you copies of the wills of both James and his wife -- Keziah or Hezia.
But now comes the unsolved problem, and one that we shall be particularly happy to have additional information about. That of the daughters - Mary and

Elizabeth, both of whom are said to have married Enoch Ward.
One Enoch Ward left a will in Craven County, N. C., dated 1746, and probated 1750, wherein he mentions his wife -- Mary, and the following children: Enoch, Jr., Ann, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Sarah, Abigail, Susannah, Richard, and Annis.
Still another will, also of Enoch Ward, Sr., dated Feb. 13, 1750, and recorded in both Craven and Carteret Counties, mentions the following children: Enoch, Jr., Richard, Ann, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Abigail, Susannah, and Sarah. His wife was Mary.
One Elizabeth Ward left a will in Onslow County, N. C., dated 1767, wherein she names the following children: Benjamin, Enoch, Jr., Seth, Dorothy, Mary, Martha, Ann, Elizabeth, Ruth, and Obedience.
Another Enoch Ward left a will in Onslow County, N. C., dated 1781, wherein he mentioned his wife Elizabeth, and three children: Namely -- Hill, Ebenezer, and John.
There was still another Enoch Ward, whose will we will give you in a future issue of the Magazine, and it was dated in 1762.
So with two of the daughters of John and Ann Shackelford reported as having married Enoch Ward, and with all the Enoch Wards in that area at about the same time, we would be particularly grateful for information that will identify the Enoch Ward who married one or two daughters of John Shackelford.

SHELBY COUNTY, KENTUCKY, SHACKELFORDS
Since we have been having a great deal of corres-

pondence recently, concerning the Shackelfords of Shelby County, Ky., we are now going to begin our investigation concerning both their ancestry and of their descendants.
The tax lists of Shelby County, Ky., show that in the year 1800 John and Robert Shackelford owned land in Shelby County, and were still there through 1802, after which Robert is no longer listed.
But in 1803 Jeremiah and Sterling Shackelford appeared in Shelby County. Marriage records show that Jeremiah, son of John and Ann Shackelford, married for his first wife -- Sarah (Sally) Shackelford, also daughter of a John Shackelford, February 22, 1802.
Sterling Shackelford married Nancy McQuade, daughter of James McQuade, October 9, 1809.
Then in 1803 we find John Shackelford, Sr., John, Jr., Jeremiah, and Sterling. John Shackelford, Sr., died in 1819 (see your Shackelford Clan Magazine for Nov. 1947). John Shackelford, Jr., died in 1818. But Sterling was gone from Shelby County by 1830, and we have just learned that he moved to Putnam County, Indiana.
In 1806 we find Joseph Shackelford in Shelby Co., but only for that one year.
In 1807 we find that an Edmund Shackelford has appeared in Shelby County as a land owner, and he remains there until 1812, when his name disappears from the tax lists. Then in 1821 we find another John on the tax list, although we have proof that both John, Sr. and John, Jr. had died.
William appears in 1809 and remains through 1811. This William was a son John and Ann, and he married Jane Cosby, daughter of John Cosby, in Washington County, Ky., May 17, 1802. He later lived in Nelson County, Kentucky.
Now we would be grateful for any and all additional information for any of the Shackelfords who at one time or another lived in Shelby County, Ky. We have some of the information, but we need more.
