POSTPONEMENT OF OUR TOUR
Since we have been forced to postpone our tour temporarily, we have decided to give you your July and August Magazines before we leave, so that we will not be so far in arrears when we return.
And we have so very much that we would like to tell you that we scarcely know where or how to begin. But in this and the August issue we are going to give you a copy of a will, not so much for its genealogical value, but because of its human interest, and to depict as vividly as possible the conditions as they existed in the South prior to the war between the States, and the results of the ultimate outcome of that conflict as it affected that section of The United States.
WILL OF MARTHA SHACKELFORD
In the name of God, Amen:
I, Martha Shackelford, wife of James M. Shackelford (James McBride Shackelford) being in sound and disposing mind and memory and understanding, and being moreover impressed with the uncertainty of an earthly condition, and being moreover desirous, so far as I have power and authority to do so, to make a disposition of all my estate and property, do now make, publish and declare this to be my last Will

and Testament, hereby revoking, annuling, canceling and destroying all other wills, testaments, and codicils by me at any time heretofore made, published, and declared.
For as much as I, the said Martha Shackelford, am entitled to a certain estate in a certain property under and by virture of the last Will and Testament of my Aunt Martha Milne, subject to a life estate in Andrew Milne, and the same has been, by virtue of a certain investment in writing, intended as a marriage settlement, the date of the fourth day of April, one thousand eight hundred and thirty three (April 4, 1833) settled and conveyed to and for certain uses and purposes, the said investment in writing so intended as aforesaid, having been made and duly executed by and between Mr James Shackelford, Robert Brown, Robert E. Brown, and in the said instrument of writing it is provided that the property of all kinds herein limited, conveyed, and settled, should be held as follows: that is to say, In trust, and after the death of the said Martha Brown, without having lawfully begotten issue living at her death, as to one moiety of the said property, real and personal, herein and truly agreed to be settled and conveyed or intended so to be to and for the sole use, benefit and behoof of the said James M. Shackelford, his heirs, executors and administrators. And as to the other moiety of the said property, real and personal, to and for the sole use and benefit and behoof of such of the immediate family of Martha Brown, namely her father, mother, brothers, and sisters, their issue or any or either of them, and for such estate or estates as she, the said Martha Brown, by her last will and testament may direct and appoint, and for want of such direction, limitations or appointment, or for so much as may not be effectively directed, limited or appointed, then to and for the sole use, benefit and behoof of the eight heirs of the said Martha Brown, other than the said James M. Shackelford, free and discharged from all other and further trusts. And also in as much as the said estate and property, real and personal, so intended to be

settled, conveyed and referred to in said instrument of writing as aforesaid, has become vested and is now held and possessed by William W. Harllee, surviving trustee under the said deed of marriage settlement. Now therefore in pursuance of the power and authority to me given in and by the said instrument of writing herein before mentioned and in the exercise thereof under the contingencies, limited and expressed of and concerning the same, I the said Martha Shackelford, formerly Martha Brown, do give, devise and bequeath all and singular, the moiety of the estate to me belonging and conveyed and settled under the said instrument of writing with power and authority to dispose thereof by will as therein provided unto my executors hereinafter named, in trust never the less, and to and for the following uses and purposes, that is to say: In trust, to have, hold, take and receive the same and every part thereof, and to apply the rents, issues, incomes and profits of the same to the maintenance and support of my mother -- Catherine Brown, during her life, and from and after the death of my said mother, I give, devise and bequeath one third of the said estate and property to my said executors, hereinafter named, in trust never the less, to and for the following uses and purposes, that is to say: In trust to and for the sole, separate and exclusive use, benefit and behoof of my niece -- Amelia Catherine Brown, and not to be subject or liable to the debts, control or engagements of any husband she may marry, for and during the period of her natural life; and from and after her death, then in trust for the use and benefit of her child or children, in equal portions if more than one she may leave surviving her, In case she should marry and leave a child or children at her death. And if she should die unmarried, or without leaving a child or children surviving her, then in trust to pay over and deliver the same in equal parts or proportions to her brothers -- James Welsman Brown and Robert B. Brown, or the surviving of them, free and dis-

charged of all other and further trusts.
And as to the other two thirds of the said property and estate, after the death of my said mother, I give, devise and bequeath the same to my two nephews -- James Welsman Brown and Robert B. Brown, to them and their heirs forever. But in case either of my nephews should depart this life without leaving lawful issue surviving [them], the portion so given such one so dying, shall be equally divided by his surviving brother and sister if living; and if dead, to such children as they may respectively leave surviving. The issue in such case to represent the parent or parents in such division.

Since we sent you the June issue we have received so much family news and so much response to our request for work in an effort to help us finance our approaching tour, that we will be unable to pass all of it along to you in this one issue. So we will give you part of it in this issue and the balance in the next one.

We have no births to report this month, but we do have one marriage; although the details were not shown, and even the name of the groom was not included in the report.
Mrs Vetis Shackelford-Younger, widow of the late Lucian Lee Younger, of Trezvant, Tenn., was married again January 15, 1950. She is the daughter of Mrs Eliza Shackelford, of Milan, Tennessee, and the late John Clark Shackelford, of Atwood, Tenn. We extend our warmest congratulations.
We also have one death to report, which always brings sadness to us, although we are aware that it is appointed for all men to die.
Mrs Lillian Thomas Shackelford, wife of Mr Sam Shackelford, of Severn, Va., age 76 years, died at her home Feb. 28, 1950. Survivors include her husband -- Mr Sam Shackelford, one son -- James B. Shackelford, one daughter, and a host of other relatives and friends. And so to the bereaved we extend profound sympathy and consolation of hope.

Following will be found the ancestry of James M. Shackelford, husband of Martha Brown-Shackelford, whose will is to be found in this issue and subsequent issues. We have so much information of this branch of the family that we can give you most of the ancestry, but we will be grateful for anything additional that you can and will send us.
John Shackelford, son of William and Hester Serre-Shackelford, was born 1760, probably in North Carolina. He died at Georgetown, S. C., March 10, 1824. General Harllee, in his book "Kinfolks", says this

John was born 1741, but his tombstone inscription lists his age as sixty four years at the date of his death in 1824; therefore his birth date would be 1760. He married Martha Ann Wright, March 3, 1779. She was born 1761, and died Sept. 7, 1818, at Georgetown, S. C. They had the following issue:

It is not known that this particular Francis Shackelford was a son of John and Martha Ann Wright. But one Francis Shackelford married Ann Davis, in Carteret County, N. C., Dec. 10, 1819; and we would be deeply grateful for proof regarding his parentage, and/or his relationship to the above mentioned John and Martha Ann.
Anna B. Shackelford, daughter of John and Martha Ann Wright-Shackelford, married first Captain Dubois. His given name and date of birth or death is not known. Anna B. was born April 17, 1782, and died July 29, 1841. They had only one child as far as our records are concerned, a son -- Abram, who died in 1819, as a young man about eighteen years of age. Anna B. Shackelford-Dubois, then married second -- Thomas Henning, Sr., date of marriage not shown; and they had the following children:

Henry Bonneau Toomer, Sr. married Elizabeth S. Shackelford, daughter of John and Martha Ann Wright-Shackelford, Dec. 11, 1805. Dates of his birth and death are not shown, nor of her birth and death. They had the following children:

Anne Peyre Shackelford, daughter of William Frederick and Elizabeth Ashby-Shackelford, born Feb. 7, 1807, and died August 8, 1886, in New Orleans, La. She married John C. Dinnes, dates of birth and death not shown, but he died in New Orleans, La. They had but one child, a daughter -- Grace Louise; and one adopted daughter -- Mary, who married Louis Grunewald.
James McBride Shackelford, son of William Frederick and Elizabeth Ashby-Shackelford, was born at Charleston, S. C., August 28, 1810. He died Sept. 26, 1877, at Charleston, S. C. He married three times, his first wife being Martha Brown, daughter of Robert Brown. She was born March 2, 1816, and died 1868. They married April 11, 1833. They had the following children:

James McBride Shackelford, married for his second wife -- Amelia Otis, date not shown. She was born Feb. 8, 1845, and died Feb. 19, 1873. They had no children. James McBride Shackelford then married for his third wife -- Harriet Jane Shackelford (see record of Willis Wilkinson Shackelford).
Anthony Bonneau Shackelford, son of John and Martha Ann Wright-Shackelford, no dates of birth or death shown. He married Harriet Jane Lee, April 17, 1819. She was born 1799, and died Oct. 19, 1824. And our record shows only one child born to this union, a son -- Willis Wilkinson Shackelford.
Willis Wilkinson Shackelford, son of Anthony Bonneau and Harriet Jane Lee-Shackelford, was born August 23, 1823, probably at Georgetown, S. C. He died May 1895, also in South Carolina. He married Esther Brown Ford, July 6, 1853. She was born Nov. 7, 1835, and died April 1, 1901. They had the following children:
