SHACKELFORDS IN HENRY COUNTY, KENTUCKY
One Frances Shackelford died in Henry County, Ky., and her estate was divided in 1807; and among her heirs were the following: James Duncan and his wife Catherine, William Duncan and William Shackelford.
One William Shackelford married Frances Duncan, Sept. 5, 1797, in Bourbon County, Kentucky.
One William Shackelford married Sabina Metcalf, February 7, 1799, also in Bourbon County, Ky.
We have always thought that the above named Williams were one and the same man, but now our records seem to indicate that they were not the same man.
James Duncan married Ludy Pryor, daughter of Sam and Mary Pryor, June 20, 1805, in Henry Co., Ky.
James Duncan married Catherine Pryor, daughter of Sam and Mary Pryor, Feb. 20, 1812, in Henry Co., Ky.

WILL OF JAMES DUNCAN
Memorandum made the twenty fifth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fourteen (March 25, 1814). I, James Duncan, Jr., being in my proper sense, though impressed with a sense of my having shortly to leave all below, and that it is appointed once for all to die, I do make

and ordain this my last Will and Testament in order following -- towit:
First: I desire that after my decease that my executor, who is hereafter named, may sell as much of my property as may be sufficient to pay off all my honest debts, either by private sale or public, as to him may seem most advantageous, desiring and to strive and use all necessary means to collect what may be due me by bonds, notes, and accounts. And if the collections should not be sufficient to pay all my debts, then to sell as above directed.
Second: I desire that the residue of my estate may be kept together, and I do hereby give and bequeath the said residue thereof to my loving wife - Catherine Duncan during her natural life time or widowhood, for the particular purpose of her support and the support of my three daughters -- Nancy, Sally, Polly, and Lena Duncan, desiring that my three daughters may be maintained and educated. And if the said estate, and if the profits arising from the farm are to be insufficient, my executor is hereby desired and authorized to sell such property as to him may seem best to be disposed of, and most convenient to be spared out of the family, for their support and education; and when it may so happen that either of the said daughters may get married, and my executor and my loving wife Catherine may think proper to give them anything to begin the world with, and that there may be proper account kept of the same with the true value thereof, so that each of my three daughters may have an equal part of what I may leave.
And whereas my daughters Sally and Polly Duncan had a legacy left them by their grandfather Samuel Prior (Pryor), of which my youngest daughter Lena will have no part, it is my desire that at the death or marriage of my loving wife Catherine, that my youngest daughter Lena may have a separate portion altogether, out of my estate, and shall be equally to one of their shares of the said portion given by their grandfather, and then the balance to be equally divided between the said Sally, Polly, and Lena.

Lastly: I do appoint and ordain my loving and trusty friend -- George Strother, to be my executor, of this my last Will and Testament; desiring that this and no other be my last Will and Testament; and I do hereby revoke and disannul all other Wills, testaments, gifts, and grants.

Was Frances Shackelford, who died in Henry Co., Ky, the same Frances Duncan who married William Shackelford, in Bourbon Co., Ky., September 5, 1797? And what was her relationship to James and Catherine Duncan? William Duncan and William Shackelford?
Was James and William Duncan sons by a former marriage, or was Catherine Pryor-Duncan related to her one way or another? Was William Shackelford, the heir, her son or her husband, or related some other way? We will be grateful for any help that any of you may be able to render us on the problem.
Then there were other Shackelfords in Henry Co., one James Shackelford, said to have been born about 1798, either in Virginia or Kentucky; and he is said to have been a son of another James Shackelford, whose wife was a Miss Strother.
This James Shackelford married three times, his first wife having been Matilda Carter, whom he married in Henry County, Ky., March 31, 1821. And by his first wife he had two children, perhaps three, as follows:

It is not known positively that Mary was a daughter of James, but she evidently was.
James Shackelford then married for his second wife -- Elizabeth Scott, whom he married in Henry Co.,

February 8, 1834. She was a daughter of John Scott. No record of any children has been found.
James Shackelford married for his third wife Permelia Caroline Sibley, daughter of Leonard and Judith Booth-Sibley, also in Henry Co., June 10, 1838. They had the following children:

James Shackelford died in Clark County, Mo., August 18, 1887. Permelia Caroline Sibley was born in Kentucky, October 8, 1817, and she died in Clark County, Mo., September 17, 1906.
As before stated, our records show that the above mentioned James Shackelford, whose wife was a Miss Strother. But Mrs Mattie Hayden, of Wyaconda, Mo., daughter of James and Permelia Caroline Sibley-Shackelford, says that her grandmother, mother of James, was a Miss Duncan. So this indicates that James was not a son of James, but perhaps a son of William Shackelford and Frances Duncan.
One Ambrose Grayson Shackelford, said to have been born at Floyd's Creek, Ky., in 1802, and who married Sarah M. Dorsey, in Hardin County, Ky., in 1826, was a brother to the above named James Shackelford, of Henry County, according to Miss Irene Morgan, of Tahlequah, Okla., and one of the descendants of Ambrose Grayson. But Miss Morgan does not know the name of the father of Ambrose Grayson, and will be grateful for that information should any of you be able to help her.
But now comes Mrs H. H. Shackelford, of New Orleans, and states that Joseph William Shackelford, deceased, of DeWitt, Ark., whom our records show to have been a grandson of Ambrose Grayson, Sr., was a cousin of her late husband -- Henry Haines Shackelford.
One James Shackelford died in Montgomery County, Alabama, in 1827, and among his children was a son James, Jr (see Shackelford Clan Magazine for June 1948). And we have never located this James, Jr., or any of his descendants.
Our records show, and with proof, that Henry

Haines Shackelford was a descendant of the James Shackelford, who died in Montgomery County, Ala., 1827. So we would like to know if the son James, Jr., was the man in Kentucky, father of James and Ambrose Grayson? Any help on this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Another Shackelford in Henry County, Ky., was one Thomas Shackelford, who deeded 100 acres of land to Robert Maxwell, for love and affection, but reserved for himself a life estate. Deed Book 1, page 185, and dated August 15th, 1801.
Since we have already worked the records of Henry County, Ky., and failed to establish the ancestry of the early Shackelfords there, we will be forever grateful for any additional information that any of you may pass along.

No doubt many of you will be surprised to learn that we are still at home, and have not left on our much advertised tour. And we are about as much surprised as any one. Our delay in leaving has been unavoidable, for which we deeply regret. But our affairs are now in order, our plans complete, and when you receive this copy of your magazine we will be on our way.
And right here we would like to call your attention to the fact that we have recently moved, so please note our change of address should any of you wish to communicate with us before our return.

She has just published a small 25 page manuscript history of the Garvey, O'Neal, Edwards, Glasscock, Asbury, Fishback, and related families, including some Shackelford data. And did all of this just for the love of genealogy, and to each of her relatives she gave a copy of her work. And was kind enough to present us with four copies. We are deeply indebted to Mrs Seitz, and wish to thank her again for her generous gesture.

We have a much belated report of the arrival of one brand new member of the Clan to report this time. Lovely buxum little Gail Ann, arrived in Alturas, Calif., Jan. 18, 1950, and will henceforth bless the home of Mr and Mrs Woodrow and Alice Maud Netherton-Goddard, her maternal grand parents being Mr and

Mrs T. B. and Bessie Lorine Shackelford-Netherton, of Gentry, Ark. Congratulations and best wishes.
We have three weddings to report this time, all of which seems to have been very elaborate affairs, and we wish we had the space to give you complete details, but that we do not have.
Mrs Nora Fell-Shackelford, of Rochester, New York, recently sent us the announcement of the marriage of her only daughter -- Jane, to Mr Laurance Stanford Haynes, Jr., of Newark, N. J., May 15, 1950. After a brief honeymoon the happy couple will be at home at 52 Revere Road, Drexel Hills, Pennsylvania.
Miss Carol Elizabeth Brookshear, became the charming bride of Mr Mack David, son of Mr and Mrs T. B. and Bessie Lorine Shackelford-Netherton, of Maysville, Ark. Names of the bride's parents were not shown, nor their residence. The nuptials were consumated at Burkburnett, Texas, May 21, 1950.
Then a few days later lovely Miss Betty Lee, daughter of Mrs M. H. Netherton, of Gentry, Ark., and the late Mr Roy Snoddy, became the happy bride of Mr Gilbert M. Kyrias, of Pittsburg, Kansas, June 3, 1950. The names of the groom's parents were not shown.
So on behalf of the entire Clan we extend sincere congratulations and best wishes for long and happy and prosperous lives together, for each of you.

We have reports of three deaths among our number, and unfortunately we do not have records of any of them, and will be deeply grateful for additional information regarding their branches of the family.
Mr A. R. Shackelford, age 68 years, a native of Troy, Ohio, but who died in the Missouri Pacific Hospital, Palestine, Texas, recently (exact date of death not shown) was a veteran of both world wars. Survivors include his widow -- Mrs Ruth Shackelford, of Houston, Texas, and two daughters, also of Houston, Texas.
Mr Lee Willard Brown, age 51 years, of Versailles, Ky., died suddenly of a heart attack May 18, 1950. Interment at Harrodsburg, Ky. Survivors include his widow - Mrs Margaret Shackelford-Brown, his mother,

two daughters, one son, two brothers, one sister, three grand children, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs Mabel Amster-Shackelford, age 44 years, of Lexington, Ky., died May 31st, 1950. She was a daughter of Mrs Minnie Thompson-Amster, and the late Mr Sam Amster, of Madison County, Ky. Survivors include her mother, two daughters, one sister, one brother, and one half brother.
So to all the bereaved we extend our deepest sympathy and consolation of hope.

John J. Shackelford married Polly Neville, daughter of Robert Neville, November 10, 1825, in Henry County, Ky. He was a brother of James and Ambrose Grayson Shackelford, perhaps. Or was he?
