SHACKELFORDS AND DESCENDANTS IN SOUTH CAROLINA

In your Shackelford Clan Magazine for January 1948, will be found a copy of the will of Stephen Shackelford, of Britton's Neck, Marion District, S. C. In that will it will be noted that he mentioned a daughter -- Ann Rogers. So following is her will.

I give and devise to H. J. Rogers, that part of my fine land plantation, situate and being in the District of Marlborough and State of South Carolina, aforesaid as represented by a plat hereunto annexed and marked J. J. R., and containing by estimate two hundred and seventy six acres, and one hundred and fifty eight acres, to him, his heirs and assigns forever.

The part of said plantation marked T. W. R., and containing by estimation five hundred and two acres, I have sold to P. H. Rogers.

I give and devise to N. S. Rogers and P. H. Rogers, to them, their heirs and assigns forever, moieties of my interest in the plantation bought of William Francis Mandeville, by B. B. Rogers and N. S. Rogers and myself.

The rest and residue of my property of what kind soever, I give to N. S. Rogers and P. H. Rogers, to be equally divided among them.

I have allowed T. W. Rogers to take with him three of the negroes named in the fourth clause of this my last Will and Testament, and should his obligations for the payment annually for two hundred dollars as hire for them, and I here state that should I, during my life time, not call upon him for it, or any part of it, then in that case the obligation is to be null and void, and he is to retain the profits and benefits accruing thereon.

I constitute and appoint N. S. Rogers, P. H. Rogers and H. J. Rogers, executors of this my last Will and Testament; and I hereby revoke all former wills by me made.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this the twentieth day of December 1852 (December 20, 1852).

Ann Eliza Shackelford, daughter of Stephen, was born, Jan. 3, 1782, and she died in Marlborough District, S. C., April 3, 1856. She was married twice. Her first marriage was to Dr Thomas Wickham, whom she married October 17, 1800, in Marion District, South Carolina.

Dr Thomas Wickham was born May 3, 1762, and he died March 22, 1804. Dr Thomas Wickham and Ann E. Shackelford had one daughter -- Anna Maria, who was born July 21, 1803, and died April 14, 1864. She married Dr John C. Ellerbe in 1829.

The date of birth of Dr John C. Ellerbe is not shown among the records that we have, but he died in 1842. Dr Ellerbe and Anna Maria Wickham had the following children:

William Shackelford------------(married Sarah E. Haselden)

Joanna--------------------------(married Gewood Berry)

Julia----------------------------(married Charles Haselden)

Richard-------------------------(married Betty Lamb)

Ned----------------------------(married Sarah Godbold)

Sarah Victoria------------------(married Asa Godbold)

Col Benjamin Rogers, Jr., son of Benjamin Rogers, Sr., and grandson of Nicholas Rogers, was born in South Carolina, December 5, 1763, and he died in South Carolina, December 12, 1836. He was twice married, his first wife having been Margaret McAllister, of Fayetteville, N. C., by whom he had no less than six daughters, namely: Jane, Elizabeth, Flora, Mary, Sarah, and Catherine.

Col Rogers, at the age of sixteen years, served in the Revolutionary War under General Francis Marion. He was one of the first sheriffs of Marlborough County, a Colonel of Militia, a State Senator, a Patron of Schools, a member of St David's Episcopal Church, which he served in various capacities. His first wife died early in life leaving him a widower. In 1804 he was serving his State as a State Senator, from Marlborough, and at the same time Dr Thomas Wickham was serving the adjoining district of Marion in the same capacity. The two men were accustomed to making the journey to Columbia, the Capitol together.

But on one of these journeys

-- 4 (520) --

Dr Wickham became very ill suddenly, and realizing that his condition was serious, made the request of his companion, friend, and colleague, that he look after his wife -- wife of Dr Wickham -- and baby daughter. Col Rogers promised him that he would do so; and just how well he kept that promise is attested to by the fact that six months later, Sept. 4, 1804, he, Colonel Rogers, made Ann Eliza Shackelford-Wickham, his second wife. And so to that union were born nine sons, as follows:

Benjamin Brack----------------(married 1st Elizabeth Allison, married 2nd Ann Eliza

Allison)

Francis Alexander--------------(married Eliza A. Dismukes)

Robert-------------------------(married Henrietta Mandeville)

William-------------------------(born Feb. 18, 1810, died Nov. 16, 1823)

Nicholas Shackelford-----------(married Mary Terrell)

John Adolphus-----------------(married Fanny Mandeville)

Paul Hamilton------------------(married Jane Valinda Terrell)

Henry James-------------------(married Elizabeth Irby)

Thomas Wickham--------------(married Betty Terrell)

The Ellerbe and Rogers families are among the most prominent in South Carolina, and we consider the Shackelfords fortunate in being inter-married with them. We have several records of these fine families, but our records are far from complete, and we will always be grateful for anything additional you will be kind enough to favor us with.

Two of the Rogers sons -- Francis Alexander and Thomas Wickham, moved to Marengo County, Ala., and are just as prominent there as their distinguished relatives in South Carolina. We also have some records of the families of these two sons, but would be grateful for additional data of them.

We wish to give you more of the Rogers records, but first let us acknowledge a subscription renewal and additional data from Mr B. L. Shackelford, of Waynesboro, Va., for which we wish to thank him again. And to report another wedding, news of which reached us before it was too late for our September copy.

Miss Jean Elizabeth Hogge, the lovely daughter of Mr and Mrs Otis Hogge, of Perrin, Va., became the bride of Mr James Earl Shackelford, of Achilles, Va., at the Union Baptist Church, Achilles, Va., July 8, 1950. This was a very elaborate affair, and we wish we had the space to give you more of the details, but we have not. So on behalf of the entire Clan we extend congratulations sincerely.
