1998 PWI Tag Team of the Year 1999

They were an unlikely pairing from the start. The super heavyweight and the light heavyweight. One was stoic, while the other was one of the most emotional stars in the WWF. Yet Kane and X-Pac jelled to become not only close friends, but WWF World tag team champions. Now the odd couple has added PWI Tag Team of the Year honors to the list of their accomplishments - despite the fact that they can no longer stand each other.

"I guess I saw something in Kane that no one else saw, not even his own brother," said X-Pac. "I knew that once we got together, we could go to the top of the WWF as a team. I had to carry him most of the time, but we still made a great team."

They won their first of two WWF tag championships by defeating Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett on March 30 (1999), and they held the belts for nearly two months before being upended by the Acolytes. But the loss of a championship was the least of their problems then.

At the time, the Undertaker was trying to convince Kane that he should be with family, not a selfish friend like X-Pac. 'Taker forced Kane to make a choice. At first, Kane went with him, but when he saw what his half-brother had done to his friend, he attacked 'Taker and resumed his partnership with X-Pac.

"I think that was the point where their relationship was solidified," said Tony Zadra of Silver Springs, Maryland. "They had trust for each other. It was an equal partnership."

One more tag team title would come their way on August 9, but the strain on their friendship soon started to show. X-Pac was weary of Kane bailing him out of two-on-one attacks. X-Pac wanted to prove he could mix it up with the major players in the WWF without assistance.

While there were arguments between the two men, the disputes seemed resolvable. Eventually, though, X-Pac decided that old partnerships were more important than his current one. After helping to reform DX, X-Pac betrayed his friend and ended their relationship.

Perhaps their alliance was doomed from the start, but no one can deny their success and effectiveness as a team.
