Description:
Well, Lucy was definitely the crowning attraction of the entire show. Basically every single seat (except, by some luck, the one right next to us) was filled, from gold seating through the big ol' two (if that many) rows of preferred seating. Of course, that meant that we certainly couldn't go and sit in gold like we had on Saturday, since they were all filled, and these big hulking, scary looking security guards were watching us all like hawks.
Anyway, the excitement was building in the room as the mean MC man came on stage. He was going to announce Lucy!! And then, he began to announce... some interviewer?? What the hell was going on? We didn't pay $45 a piece to watch a freaking interview! We could have not flown the 3000 miles and instead sat in front of the tv and watched Regis and Kathy Lee to see an interview for crying out loud!
Well, anyway, the interviewer lady came on stage and proceeded to read the answers to the 10 most commonly asked questions of Lucy Lawless. It was actually fairly amusing, had she not later gone and asked the questions anyway. Gee, that served a big purpose. Heck, she'd probably never even seen the show before. *sigh* I was so pissed about the interviewer that I left a few times (I had already heard everything she was asking before) and bought some more stuff, chatted with all the other pissed people, and would eventually work my way back into the auditorium, just to be glared at by the security guard on our row.
Julia attempted to go to the side and take pictures, like she had for everyone else, but she was thwarted a few times. Finally, she managed to sneak down there and got some in before they sent her back. After she tried from another place, they tried to physically take her dad's really expensive camera. Needless to say, she was very unhappy with that turn of events. And that time she wasn't even down at the side! She was standing in one of the freaking entrances to the auditorium, not even in anyone's way! Wait, now tell me again who was paying the big bucks to go to this thing, and then get treated like dirt? I obviously didn't appreciate the treatment.
Ok, ok, enough of my ranting, back to Lucy. She was very charming, and seemed to really try to connect to the audience, even though she had the interviewer there. She answered the 10 pre-approved audience questions, including one where someone asked her to say something in German. She said "Laß mich nicht wütend" which means "don't make me angry." Since I know German, that made me very happy ;) Anyway, after answering the pre-approved questions, she even answered some yelled out from the audience; maybe she could sense our disappointment at having to watch an interview.
The second time I got up to leave, I had just exited the auditorium when I heard the word I most want to hear from Lucy's lips--"sing." I went right back in and sat in rapt attention as she got up and sang a Scottish song quite beautifully. The funny thing was, she told us that she had heard a recording of a famous black woman (sorry, I can't remember her name) singing the same song in the 1930's. So, basically, it was a New Zealander impersonating a black woman singing a Scottish folk song. I found it a bit amusing ;)
She also talked a bit about her Saturday Night Live stint, mentioning how they start out with a lot of skits, and then narrow them down further and further until the actual day of airing. She said that she enjoyed doing it a lot, and while I couldn't really hear very well, I think she also said she had hoped they would cut the skit with her singing.
Lucy was definitely the highlight, but I wish it had been arranged better. I was very very disappointed until she got up and sang, which in my opinion totally made it worth it. And, of course, I love listening to her voice.
