Note: This is some general info about the characters..for more spoiler type info check out the Evangelion Encyclopedia (until i get on my lazy ass and rewrite this)

Rei Ayanami is the pilot of the Unit 00 Prototype model is the first person to pilot an Eva. She cannot relate properly to other people emotions for she does not even understand them herself. She has made no friends in her school since she was enrolled which shows how poor she relates to others. She is only relatively normal with Gendou and yet you might remember her answering Asuka when she stood in her way and said that Gendou favours her and she says "I am not favoured, I know it well". It would seem to me that she knows a bit about what she was all along .

Shinji Ikari is the main character in the unfolding story. He does not really want the responsibilty of piloting the Unit 01 Test model but Rei's condition caused him to change his mind. He is very insecure and has to tell himself not to run away from things which is something that he frequently does to escape from reality and resposibilty. You might notice that he listens to his walkman when he wants to get away from things. However he is always trying to change himself. Misato, who acts as mother/sister/friend for Shinji helps him a lot in finding the right way.Shinji feels a deep hatred for his father, who neglected him in his childhood and is using him as a tool for NERV. On the other hand he feels strangely attracted to Rei although he does not know why.

Asuka Langley pilots Unit 02 which is the first production model. Asuka Langley is 3/4 German and 1/4 Japanese and can be described as egoistic, self-rightrous and a direct girl who is full of pride. She easily compensates for both Rei's and Shinji's quietness. A bright girl, Asuka has lived through a painful past, losing her mother. She never wants to lose anything or anyone again and has developed a strong self-determination to take all obstacles. Asuka doesn't seem to get along with Shinji and keeps criticising him. However both seem to share feelings for each other as they stay together most of the time.

Misato Katsuragi is the guardian of Shinji. You would find that she is very outgoing and open with people but it took some time for her to become such. She was the only survivor of the expedition team to Antarctica as she was saved by her father when he put her in a protective container just before the second impact occured.

Tohji Suzuhara is the pilot of Unit 03, albeit only for a short period of time. Tohji really cares about his sister and visits her constantly in hospital after she was wounded during the first battle of Unit 01 which was the reason that he had struck Shinji that first day of school, something that he regretted later.

Kaoru Nagisa is sent to NERV as a replacement for Asuka as she gets unable to control EVA-02 anymore. His perfect synchronisation makes NERV suspicious and as they investigate they find out that Kaworu indeed is the 17th Angel. Kaworu becomes a good friend of Shinji, who opens his heart to Kaworu. As it becomes clear that Kaworu is an Angel, Shinji has to kill him, which remains in Shinji's heart as a traumatic experience.

Horaki Hikari A classmate of Shinji. She seems to like Touji. Her personality changes as she gets along with Asuka and becomes more serious.

Aida Kensuke Classmate and friend of Shinji. A techno-freak who is very excited about the Evangelions. Being a video and military maniac he dreams of piloting an EVA one day.

Kaji Ryoji seems to hold an important position in the dealings of NERV but one never gets to know what his job there really is. He is one of the german team that trained Asuka Langley and when EVA-02 was taken to Japan he accompanied the transfer operation. During his time attending college Kaji met Ritsuko and Misato. It seems as if he had a relationship with Misato once.

Ritsuko Akagi is member of the First Technology Division in Department of Technology and Development of Nerv Headquarters and has a deep understanding of both the Evangelion units and the magi system at NERV. Her mother created Magi, the computer that controls NERV, and she became a scientist to continue the family tradition. As an old friend of Misato she can't help but scold her light-hearted behavior. Although Ritsuko always acts confidently and determined, she is often enough worried about NERV's actions and plans.

Naoko Akagi is Ritsuko's mother and was the one that constructed the three magi, Casper, Melachior and Belthazar which represents much of the internel struggle going on in herself. She was very much in love with Gendou. She commited suicide after she strangled Rei who led her to realise that she was only being used by Gendou all along.

Gendou Ikari is the person who initiated the whole Evangelion project and it would seem that he keeps a lot of its secrets to himself. He doesn't really appear to care for his son Shinji even though he most probably cared a lot about him. He is very harsh to the people around him and doesn't really care about the feelings of others. Gendou slep with Naoko and Ritsuko to use them for his own ends.

Yui Ikari is the mother of Shinji. She was involved in an accident one day testing a Evangelion, something that Gendou never forgave himself for, and was the reason why Gendou kept on clinging onto the importance of Unit 01. In the accident I belive that that Yui was disolved in the LCL and taken into Unit 01 which explains why Gendou talks to Unit 01 and why it moved without power before it had taken in the S2 Organ.

Fuyutsuki Kouzou is the sub-commander and second only to Gendoh.

Maya Ibuki is Ritsuko's protege. Maya works for the tatics department of NERV. As an assistant of Ritsuko, she supports the research on EVA technologies. She opposes the application of dummy plug systems.

PenPen is the penguin that lives in Misato's refrigerator.

Keel Lorenz is the chairman of the Human Instrumentality Project. There is precious little information on him and the committee, Seele. His German name however might explain the names Seele which means Soul in german and Nerv which means Nerve.
