Sutherland High School |
The first high school in Sutherland was a frame building constructed in 1897, which was replace by a brick building that served the community from 1917 to 1989, when the present high school was built. The Sailors of Sutherland first participated in a state basketballl tournament in 1918, and since then both boy's and girl's teams has travelled to state in 1968 and 1992. In 1965-66 they held state championships in both football and track (Nebraska High School Historical Society 518).
Similar to many Nebraskan towns, Sutherland is named for an officer of the Union Pacific Railroad. In the town's early history, according to the Nebraska Historical Guide, "Opposite Sutherland on the Overland Trail was Bob William's Ranche, often attacked by Indian mauraders in the mid-1860's." West of the town, not far from Paxton, was "the desolate Alkali Station, Telegraph Office and Military Post. This was a lonely and dreary place and soldiers assigned duty here often deserted" (Wilson 122).
One of the larger towns participating in this class, Sutherland's population dropped over the last two censuses by 17 percent to 1,032 (Nebraska Blue Book 819).
