NBC, ABC locked in struggle for November sweeps win
The broadcast premiere of one of the most popular movies of all time
didn't even crack Nielsen Media Research's list of the 10 most-watched
shows of Thanksgiving week.
ABC's ``Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' and ``The Practice,'' which
aired during the final two hours of ``Titanic,'' both drew more viewers
than the movie. ABC's showing of ``The Santa Clause'' opposite the first
two hours of ``Titanic'' drew 16.8 million viewers.
The ratings mean the competition between ABC and NBC to win the
important November ``sweeps'' period, when ratings are closely monitored
to set local advertising rates, is as tight as the Bush-Gore contest.
Through Tuesday, NBC was leading ABC by one-tenth of a ratings point
during November, although ABC has averaged slightly more prime-time
viewers. NBC is comfortably in front among viewers ages 18 to 49, the
demographic it cares about almost exclusively.
For the week that ended Sunday, NBC averaged 14.1 million viewers in
prime-time (9.0 rating, 15 share), ABC had 13.7 million viewers (8.7, 14),
CBS had 12.9 million (8.6, 14), and Fox had 9.9 million (6.1, 10).
Among the smaller networks, the WB had 4 million viewers (2.6 rating, 4
share), UPN had 3.4 million (2.2, 4), and Pax TV had 1.3 million (0.9, 2).
NBC's ``Nightly News'' won the evening news ratings race for the week
with 11.4 million viewers (8.3 rating, 16 share). ABC's ``World News
Tonight'' had 10.5 million viewers (7.8, 15), and the ``CBS Evening News''
had 9.8 million (7.1, 13).
An ``X'' in parentheses denotes a one-time-only presentation. The rating is
the percentage of the nation's estimated 100.8 million TV homes. Each ratings
point represents 1,008,000 households.
