The Controller
-

Here is an ANIMORPHS fanfic I wrote, which kind of evolved from a character sketch I was writing. It grew later from ideas I had about what it's like to be a Controller, or to be a Yeerk for that matter. I'd like to say I have high hopes for this fic, but actually it was more like a writing exercise that I published so other people could give me feedback. It kind of grew, though, as you can see. If you have any suggestions or comments about this or any other of my fanfics, my mailbox is always open.

If you're a regular Animorphs reader, you can probably recognize some similar motifs to many of the Animorphs books that concentrated on Yeerks and Controllers, especially book Nineteen, though I've tried to be unique while staying true to the original themes. Please see the disclaimer at the bottom of this page, and after reading, please tell me what you think! And if you're involved with writing in any way, please feel free to criticize.

Additional Note: Despite protests from people who apparently actually liked this fanfic, I don't think I'll be finishing this. There just isn't any inspiration, any interest at all anymore. It was fun to write, though!

Prologue

My name is Kareis 924 of the Sulp Niar pool. Yes, I am a Yeerk. One of those you know as The Enemy. Those creepy, slimy slugs that crawl into people's heads and rape their free will, using our hosts, whom we slowly and gradually kill because of our infestation, as tools to tear across the galaxy and demolish everything alive that is not useful to us. Yes, I've heard the Andalite propaganda. But, even though there is truth in it as there is in all the stories of this war, we are not all the same. I am not like Visser Three, who enslaved millions, led war campaigns and the destruction of worlds, one who would sacrifice thousands of his own people for personal glory. But nor am I of those spineless ones who refused to take over a host, imprisoned forever like an embryo in the Pool. No, I am Kareis nine-two-four. I am Visser Nine, the leader of thousands. I am . . .

I was. I was, because I am no longer. My life has ended long ago, or not that long ago. I am just a memory, and time is nothing now. What is left of me, what is speaking now is only something vague, something humans might call a ghost. The leftovers of the spark from when I died, the thoughts and the memories still drifting in my last host's mind. That is how I take my ghostly form; my last host, someone sympathetic for a mind and voice lost forever, dragged up my memory and took it upon herself to write it down, to give it some kind of form so that it would not perish forever when the years wore on and the memory became more hazy.

This is my story. No, it's hers, her story entirely, and only sometimes, through her, I can speak. But for a long, long time it was the other way around. I was . . .  I was myself, and she was the host, something I used to walk and communicate and carry out my mission with. But her mind, her spirit and will and consciousness never died. They outlived me, in fact. So maybe, in a way, it could be called our story, as inaccurate as that may seem.

Because I know that here will be a sketching of my life, all that I have done and made of it. So I do not ask for your sympathy or pity; I know that much of what I have done can only breed contempt and hate, among the humans and the Andalites and my fellow Yeerks. But now I'm glad that even though I'm gone, even though my memory gets fainter every day, I will be remembered. On some file stored away on an aged computer, or stored away in our databases, somehow we will live on.

ANIMORPHS is a Scholastic Book Series by K.A. Applegate. This work, The Controller, is a work of fanfiction. The "world" that the story is set in, some situations and characters come from the series, but the plot is my own as are the main characters. I would also like to give my thanks to K.A. Applegate herself for creating such a great book series that has room for fanfiction!

I would love to hear about what you think of this. You can mail me at kareis924@yahoo.com. If you would like to use this work for your own uses in any way, shape or form, please e-mail me first so I can find out about it. My goal for this story is that it will present a new angle and a new mode of thinking for all the readers of the chronicles of the Animorphs. I hope you enjoy it!
