Plays Harry Senate. Harry is a concerned teacher who has been given
the assignment of teaching in the "Dungeon", a tough classroom
in the basement of the school. He is concerned about the students he
teaches, but hates the negative attitude they bring to the
classroom. However, he does everything he can to make the students
take stock in their education and their lives.
Harry is upset about the
death of John LeBlonde and starts thinking about Dana Poole.
He wants to make sure that she isn't upset about the way things went
between him and her. He tells her, in a rather awkward moment
that his door is always open is she ever needs to talk. By the
end of the episode she does come to his room and admit that she did
love him a little, but she's okay with their "friendship"
and there is no chance she will kill herself over it. Harry is
relieved and believes a real friendship has been made.
Harry serves as a sounding
board and comforter for Lauren in this episode. He tries to
comfort her by walking her home after a hard day. On the way,
he touches her hair. The next day Lauren asks him about
it. They discuss how becoming a couple would be all wrong, but
in the end they kiss!
This could be the start of a beautiful friendship!
Harry spends most of the
episode in the dungeon during the lockdown phase of the school
search. He gets to try out one of the student's metal
detectors while searching for weapons, (what else is there to do
during a lockdown?). He does get a chance to insult
Guber though.
Anyway, when he hears that Lauren is being held hostage he bolts
from the room, (leaving Marilyn there), and runs to save her.
He sees that Neil has her hostage. Neil was a former student
of his. He tries to talk him out of the gun in his usual cool,
flippant manner. When a police radio chirps Neil turns and
Harry jumps on him allowing Lauren to spring free. What a
perfect way for him to prove his love for her.
They end up having a romantic dance on a lovely date that
evening.
Harry breaks up a gang fight
and protects a student from harm. The student, Tyronn
Anderson, was being beat up by his own gang. Harry learns that
he is trying to get out of the gang because he can't take it
anymore. He confides in Harry that he shot a rival gang member
in self defense. He only tells him if Harry promises to keep
it a secret. Up to this point Harry has had to work secretly
with kids to get them to trust him, but now the secret is too
big. He visits Tyronn at choir practice after school and finds
he is an excellent singer. Harry is struggling with the secret
he has. I'm sure we'll hear more about his in the future.
Harry is way cool. He's an
intense teacher who goes way out of his way to help his
students. In fact he almost goes too far in his efforts,
throwing himself into the role of Mentor/Guidance Counselor.
His intentions are always good, but sometimes his methods are
questionable. Firing blanks from a gun in the room,
sabotaging an NRA group meeting, and the like.
Regardless of what he does though, I can't help but admire his
efforts.
He is my favorite character and a
super part of the show.

Thoughts:
Harry is a stupendous teacher, but I'm not
sure I'd want to work with him in real life. He's got a
scathing wit and I would just hate to be the butt of his
jokes. Still, I give him credit for all that he has
accomplished during this school year, unique as his methods
are. I just hope he doesn't give himself an ulcer from
trying to solve all the world's problems.
