Crafts & Activities

Blue and Yellow
Give the children little pieces of blue and yellow cellophane so they can understand how green is made. Or demonstrate with drops of food coloring in a jar of water. Try making other color combinations!

Rainbows
Draw rainbows with paint, markers, crayons!

Play Dress-Up!
Dress in clothes that are the color of the day or place clothing in the prop box associated with that color.

Playdough
Playdough is a great medium for colors. Set it out in the color of the day. Put old playdough (in other colors) out as well, asks the kids to choose two different colors....and mix them together with their hands. What color did it make?

Take a Walk!
Go on a color walk - try to find as many things as you can matching the color of the day

Spaghetti Painting
Dip cooked spaghetti in the desired color of paint and let it "wiggle" across the paper

Cut It Out!
Make a large collage with the kids. Find and cut out pictures in magazines that are the color of the day.

String It Along
String the desired color of buttons, beads or dyed pasta shapes (See: Craft Recipes)

Ice Sculptures
Fill milk cartons with water (tinted with the desired color of food coloring) to make ice sculptures in the water table.

Sandy Rice or Ricey Sand!
Tint rice with the desired color of food coloring to use for sandbox play.

Handprints
To help children learn the concept of mixing colors...Dip each child's hand in yellow tempera paint...and the other in blue tempera paint. They can make a handprint with each hand. Then ask them to rub their hands together...what color does it make? Make some more prints! Vary the colors to introduce new color combinations: red & yellow (orange); blue & red (purple)..etc. They can do this project with a buddy too...have each pair dip their hands in a different color and rub hands with each other!

Make Rainbows
Cut circles out of construction paper in each of the rainbow's colors in the following sizes: red (9"), orange (8"), yellow (7"), green(6"), blue (5"), indigo (4"), and violet (3"). Have the children glue the orange circle on top of the red; the yellow on top of the orange; the green on top of the yellow..and so on ending with violet! Encourage the children to center each circle on top of the other - but let them be creative - no one rainbow will be the same!! Cut each completed circle in half! You will have lots of rainbows to hang around the room or the let children take one home!

Red, Yellow and Blue
red, yellow, blue food coloring
a can of white icing
paper plates (1 per child)
pretzel sticks (3 for child

Give each child 3 spoonfuls of icing on their plates. Place a drop of different coloring on each spoonful. They can experiment mixing the colors together with their pretzel sticks. They can sample their colorful creations and create new and interesting color by mixing together. Add mini muffins or cupcakes for a fun snack!

Songs, Fingerplays & Nursery Rhymes

Two Little Blackbirds
Two little blackbirds sitting on a hill,
Hold up two thumbs.
One named Jack and one named Jill.
Life one, then the other.
Fly away Jack,
Hide one behind your back.
Fly away Jill,
Hide the other behind your back.
Come back Jack
Then bring them back home again, one at a time.
Come back Jill.

If you're wearing red today,
Please stand up.

If you're wearing green today,
Green today, green today,

...and so on.
