Hayle Mail Sept. 17, 1914

For the past two weeks after war was declared, business was at a standstill, but now since the German Navy seems to be bottled up the steamers are plying to and fro almost the same as before the conflict.

Business conditions are very unsettled in the United States, especially in the mining regions where hundreds of men are laid off or working on half time. It seems as if no particular camp is exempt. Michigan suffering as much as Montana and Arizona.

Whether it will continue so until peace is declared in Europe or will become normal again in the course of a few weeks I cannot say. As I stated in one of my previous letters, it is advisable for Cornishmen to study the question seriously before leaving Cornwall especially first trippers. I would advise all patrons that are coming to America to write me what boats that leave on as it makes it easier for me to locate them on the docks is I have their names.
