MUISE 1931-
This old New England name is supposed to be of
Scottish origin and was written "Calfe" in colonial records. The family, of whom
we have no records previous to Robert Calef, settled in Roxbury MA in 1638.
During the first century of Massachusetts history, Robert
Calef helped put down the Salem Witchcraft trials; and he was the author
of several books, among which was the "More Wonders of the Invisible World" in
which he denounced the theories of Cotton and Increase Mather, who were
responsible for the witchcraft troubles of Salem.
