Acid rain is a serious environmental problem in most parts of Canada and the US.

Acid rain is a general phrase meaning acid falling from the atmosphere. More accurately called acid deposition. There are two types of acid deposition, wet and dry.

Dry deposition refers to acidic gases. Nearly half of acid deposition is dry. This may deposit itself on your car, street, house, or even you, and during any type of rainstorm, is washed away into your lawn where grasses use the water, into your flower bed, where flowers use the water, into a stream, where fish take in the water.

Examples of wet deposition are (acidic) snow, sleet, fog, rain, and any other form of precipitation.

Acid rain is caused by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides which come from burning coal and other fossil fuels.

Acid rain has tremendous effects on the environment. Acid rain has and still continues to slowly destroy sculptures, building materials, and ancient cave paintings.
