Cloth Diapering Lingo

Cloth Diapering Lingo

Aristocrat: a popular wool soaker (often used at night).
Contoured diapers: Flat diapers cut to fit well in a diaper cover—frequently they have an hourglass shape.
Diapering System: everything you use to diaper your baby, from liner to cover.
Fitted diapers: Diapers with attached fasteners, and usually elastic to ensure a snug, leak free fit.
Gussets: Gathers around the leg holes that catch anything that might otherwise escape (a very good feature for a cover/fitted diaper to have!)
Prefolds: The most common type of cloth diaper in the US— cotton cloth folded and sewn so that there is a thick center section, and thinner sections along the edges. When buying prefolds, look for the number of layers; 4x8x4 means that the outer sections are 4 layers thick, and the central section is 8 layers thick.
Pull-on pants: a type of cover that is pulled on over the diaper like, well, pants.
Snappi: a popular fastener for diapers when you don’t want to use pins—has three grippers, one for the fabric coming between the baby’s legs, and one each for the fabric coming around the sides of the baby’s waist.
Wool soaker: a thick wool pull-on cover used when ventilation is more important than a trim fit (particularly at night).
Wraps: a type of cover that is put on over the cover in the same way a disposable diaper is put on—with fasteners at the waist, and sometimes the legs.
