Ericson Lake History

Since the year 1916 when the lake was created, it has fulfilled various needs of the total Nebraska community. Ericson lake was created primarily to generate electricity. The purpose of generation of hydroelectric power was discontinued in the 1970’s. However, other benefits from Ericson Lake accrued but were not recognized beyond the excellent fishing and waterfowl hunting. The benefits not previously recognized include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

• Recharge of High quality water to the Nebraska aquifer system

• Downstream Cedar River sediment accumulation control

Waterfowl and upland bird and game bird sanctuaries

• Excellent beaver, coyote, and river otter habitat

  •  Recreation resource to thousands of people from all of Nebraska and the Midwest state area

Lake and Area Offerings

At the Gateway to the Sandhills, Ericson Lake and the surrounding area offers the finest sandhills beauty to be found.  The serenity of nature at Ericson Lake offers lazy afternoon strolls, exciting fishing expeditions, some of the best waterfowl hunting as well as spectacular monitoring of Bald Eagles, Blue Herons, Whooping Cranes and River Otter.

An old carousel was converted to a picnic area shelter many years ago and marks the entry to the lake.  The Lake offers a boat ramp which allows all types of boats and pontoons.  Ericson Lake is a No - Wake lake.

The lake has an excellent beach and swimming area.  On the south end of the lake is the Dam.  In the area of the dam are various fishing holes that are always producing some of the largest fish caught in the state.  Additionally,  the lake hosts a handicapped fishing access dock and several new picnic and camping areas.
