Up until July 31, 2023, the iconic Ira Friedman had worked on all of the global licensing and publishing deals for The Topps Company and was responsible for the many contractual GPK license agreements (as demonstrated in artist Joe Simko's artwork above and below) that collectors have seen and appreciated over the years, especially since the explosion of agreements that started in 2019. As of August 1, 2023, Andrew Goodman (Vice President and General Manager of Culture & Entertainment, Fanatics Collectibles) at Fanatics, Inc. will be assisting with the licensing role until a permanent replacement is assigned, however, a slowing down of new and exisiting GPK agreements over this period will most likely take place; so collectors may see a slight or significant reduction of product and items as 2024 rolls around.

It's All About Fans First! by Ira Friedman

Ever since my first publishing gig at STARLOG and FANGORIA sci-fi and horror magazines in the late '70's, it's always been about the fans. In 1980, when I worked at Lucasfilm Ltd., I saw firsthand how much care and attention George Lucas placed on fostering an authentic connection with Star Wars fans everywhere. When I later branched off on my own, I produced official tie-in magazines for fan-fueled properties including: BladeRunner, The Goonies, Gremlins, Back to the Future, among others, and created the official E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Fan Club for Amblin Productions and Universal Studios.

When the Garbage Pail Kids blindsided the world in 1985, it didn't take long for me to get hooked on everything GPK. In 1987, I acquired the publishing rights for an official "one-shot" magazine, based on the ill-fated Garbage Pail Kids movie. The film tanked at the box office yet has become a cult favorite to some many years later. While not particularly fond of the movie, it did not undermine my fascination with this quirky and outrageous property. Nor did it discourage the legions of fans who just couldn't get enough of GPK.

In 1988 I joined Topps as the company's Director of New Product Development. I got to 'play' in the firm's non-sport 'sandbox' and spent much time immersed in things like Wacky Packages, Mars Attacks, along with many outside licenses and other company creations, most notably Garbage Pail Kids. My obsession with this irreverent-yet-adorable, controversial-yet-hilarious brand was in full blossom. While I was technically in charge of the GPK trading card program, the bulk of the credit goes to the artists - both back in those halcyon days and to the current times - whose incredible artwork and boundless creativity hit a nerve that continues to reverberate throughout the fan community.

In more recent times I have functioned in the role of chief architect of the GPK licensed merchandise business. It's been a blast working with like-minded partners from all areas of commerce as they've passionately translated GPK into a wide variety of innovative consumer goods. This diverse range of official products span: Monopoly board games, 8-bit video games, middle-school books by R.L. Stine, comics written by Adam F. Goldberg, a stunning 78-card Tarot Deck and the upcoming, first-ever GPK Pop-Up book, plus a myriad of amazing toys and lots of other cool stuff.

My 33+ year love affair with GPK is about to come to its professional end as July 31 will be my last day at Topps/Fanatics. The company has assembled a competent team to carry the torch and I look forward to seeing GPK persevere, prosper and continue to charm and infatuate the "little kid" inside us all. As for me, while GPK will always hold a special place in my heart, it's time to move on and explore other opportunities. Again, you are not being fully upfront with the facts. You were a publisher, and you know how it works. As a licensee, it has to be work made for hire. If this was existing art, then your retailer never told us that it was existing art. You never told us it was existing art. We would not have used it if we knew it was existing art. But then how did he get a sketch that looks like one to be approved for the cover you finished? Did you supply the sketch and then draw it or did you supply the sketch after the fact? Because the retailer was to hire you under standard work made for hire, as I'm certain you've done in the past when you published comics. You were a licensee on some titles when you published, and any work you produced would be assigned to the rights holder.

Now that we know that the retailer may not have been upfront with us, or perhaps he didn't know, or something else, it's too convoluted and we are not using your cover nor working with the retailer on future covers. We were not attempting to fabricate anything. The retailer was to have a new cover commissioned, and the artist sign the paperwork. When we spoke with him, we asked him to confirm that he was not claiming to own the art. Again, thank you for pointing out that someone was not upfront about this. To be clear, we are not using your cover again. We will be taking this off of our website on Monday. I appreciate your bringing this to our attention, and wish you the best. Thank you, Nick."

GPK: "ORIGINS 2" 2023 PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT

Artist Jeff Zapata took to social media on December 30, 2022, to announce the continuation of GPK Origins for 2023: "It's not over! We're just starting Jack! lol. As was the president in our last 3rd issue of our time-travel "origin series" (the concept as you know was written years ago on Facebook, you guys do the math what was first. We (writers/artists personally really don't care)... Both GPK comics will promise a new aesthetic of GPK storytelling. I should know, I helped in both projects. Jeff Zapata concept rough, final cover sketch was done (shown here) and final painting will be done by the great Ray Lago. You don't get better [than] that! Happy New Year to all! I'll be busy for the next six months. Lol!" On April 04, 2023, artist Dustin Graham posted to social media, "Working on the Garbage Pail Kids Origins comic issue 4 with Jeff Zapata, Chris Meeks and Adam F. Goldberg for Dynamite Comics, get issue 1-3 in stores now." This eventually became the Trashin' Through Time cover #2, painted by artist Ray Lago.



GPK: TTT SDCC ANNOUNCEMENTS

SDCC ARTICLE: On July 19, 2023, ComiCon.com posted an article titled "SDCC 2023: Garbage Pail Kids: Trashin’ Through Time’ To Launch This October", and announced the new "Origins" comic continuation story, stating, "The Garbage Pail Kids are at it again. After revealing their origins with Garbage Pail Kids: Origins, Adam F. Goldberg, Hans Rodionoff, and Jeff Zapata are back for more with Garbage Pail Kids Thrashin’ Through Time, the next tale of the gross-out children. This time, though, it’s all about time as the kids are “flung from their World War II origins to a 1980s ruled by their own kind.” Dynamite calls it “It’s Planet of the Apes in the style of the GPK.”

Goldberg said in a statement, “Our cliffhanger in Origins teased that the Garbage Pail Kommandos traveled through time and landed in the ’80s. This gave us the perfect runway to kick off our new story in the decade when Garbage Pail Kids were created by Topps. Although, we quickly discover that it’s Nasty Nick’s alternate 1980s where Garbage Pail Kids rule the world and humans are nearly extinct. This was the perfect jumping off point to continue to have fun with the time traveling conceit as Adam Bomb and the gang hunt Nasty Nick through time.” Zapata added, “We wanted to have the characters form a solid family structure in those first three issues. That family bond between the characters has paid off in this new series as our heroes find themselves trapped in a world they do not recognize. It all snowballs from there as the Kommandos discover who really won the war.”

Additionally, Rodionoff said, “We got to expand our unique take on the Garbage Pail Kids; the juxtaposition of GPK characters with more “normal” human characters. The contrast of having them occupy the same universe is what sets this book apart from other GPKomics of the past. As far as specifics go, I wouldn’t want to spoil any of the future issues, but I will say that they do travel to a spoiled future.” Chris Meeks joins Zapata on the interior art and the first issue boasts covers from Zapata, Meeks and Tom Bunk, plus a classic trading card cover and a Blank Authentix edition. Celebrating GPK‘s trading card origin, each of the main variant covers will be bagged alongside a new limited edition card. The first three covers on each will have cards featuring their art, while the fourth trading card style cover will have a card featuring an interior page from the issue. Also, a trade paperback of Garbage Pail Kids: Origins will be available alongside the first issue. Garbage Pail Kids Thrashin’ Through Time is scheduled to debut this October."

BLEEDING COOL ARTICLE: On July 19, 2023, BleedingCool.com posted an article titled "Garbage Pail Kids Teach You Everything About Time Travel", and stated, "Dynamite Entertainment has announced a new Garbage Pail Kids comic book series, Trashin' Through Time, starting this October, by Adam F. Goldberg, Hans Rodionoff and Jeff Zapata."

The hit creative conglomerate is back for more gross-out goodness. Their previous series was called "absolute trash in the best way possible" by a leading outlet. That is the energy being captured once more, as the titular colorful cast finds themselves flung from their World War II origins to a 1980s ruled by their own kind. It's Planet of the Apes in the style of the GPK, and fans of all eras will not want to miss this riot of a tale!

For an exciting first from Dynamite, all main covers for every issue in the series will be polybagged with an exclusive new limited edition Garbage Pail Kids trading card! The first three covers on each will have cards featuring their art, while the fourth trading card style cover will have a card featuring an interior page from the issue. On October 4, 2023, artist Robert Jimenez posted the above unpublished artwork to social media (+ Reddit) stating to Instagram, "Sharing this illustration I did for a store variant cover to Dynamite's Garbage Pail Kids: Trashin' Through Time , which, unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control is no longer happening.", and Facebook, "Wanted to share this illustration I did for a store variant cover to Trashin' Through Time#1, unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, my cover is not happening."

Due to a situation with Gotham City Comics surrounding the ADAM Bomb artwork cover by Nat Jones for the Origins #1 variant cover, and an upcoming hardback collated version, Dynamite decided to no longer accept commissioned requests due to this incident and the unfortunate sequence of events. See the GPK Licenses 2022 page for more information on the original cover. Hardcover image pictured further above with additional information. An insider noted:

"It was commissioned by a comic shop owner who was allowed to create [their] own variant covers (if a store orders enough copies, Dynamite will publish an exclusive cover for the store with the art provided). A previous comic shop commissioned artist complained that his cover was being reused by Dynamite and posted they were stealing his art. Dynamite got upset; they decided not to re-print the cover and not sell or deal with that shop owner because of the confusion. Since this [new piece] was commissioned by the same comic shop owner, it was later cancelled by the owner of Dynamite to not be printed. [The tribute] reused a Back To Future gag similar to other artists gags on cards." The license holder deals with different rules for covers than comic shops who can bend the rules a bit more.

On November 18, 2023, co-creator and artist Jeff Zapata took to his social channels to share a bit of production information for TTT comic #1 with some changes that had taken place, especially pertaining to the Cover D promo card artwork, stating, "From the cutting room floor. We originally had Spider MANNY in the black costume as inked by Chris Meeks. But at printing time we were told to change it. So I drew, inked, and colored a Spider MANNY as I originally designed him as a replacement. But that didn’t fly either. So I went with Anna Banna." This original iteration, is very reminiscent of Zapata's 2004 ANS4 'Spider MANNY' (card 19a) concept painted by John Pound.

* Historically speaking, the "GL" exclusive character has always been executed by artist JOE Simko, but for this release artist BRENT Engstrom stepped into the driver's seat and created the GreenLight Collectibles (GL) employee card image. On the same day, GPK News posted two sticker-giveaway images, showcasing the Clutch CLINT Dodge Challenger character (GL team member Clint Lafollette, Product and Design Manager), from the 2019 Series 1 set, and the Tangled TIM (GL team member Clint Bradley, Director of Global Sales), from the 2022 Series 4 set. The final vehicle model images were posted online at the end of November, 2023, and the lineup had one major change and one addition, the 1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible (Malibu SS), driven by Vincent Vega, was switched to a 1977 Checker Taxicab, which ties into Mia Wallace's 'Pulp Fiction' character, and the still-to-be-determined GL Employee car was titled '1971 Dodge Challenger Convertible'.

On November 29, 2023, Greenlight Collectibles took to social media to state, "Surprised to see another GPK series so soon? Stay tuned to find out what the GreenLight-exclusive card will look like! # 54100 - Expected Release Date: March 2024 - 1:64 Garbage Pail Kids Series 6."

Another reason for the series' success is its ability to push boundaries and challenge conventions. The Garbage Pail Kids series was controversial when it was first released, with some parents and educators concerned about the cards' graphic and sometimes violent imagery. However, the series' creators defended the cards as a form of satire and parody, and the controversy only served to boost the cards' popularity.
