TOPPS' *BUKIMI KUN* RELEASE
ONLINE STORE EXCLUSIVE

A nostalgic tribute set for international collectors , for those collators old and new, using the popular "Bukimi Kun" title. The 'holy grail' of international "Garbage Gang" releases, Topps has created a new "Japan" release (albeit, released in the U.S. only, as an online exclusive) with the GPK header and names written in Japanese kana. The series is a direct replication of the images for the 2014 Series 1 U.S. release (from earlier this year) and the layout for the late 1980's "Bukimi Kun" Japan release, using large number font, the removal of the 'peel here' arrow and the iconic GREEN header - which is no longer curved and covered up the GPK header of yesteryears.

FUN FACT #1: A Japanese 'yellow' printing plate (64b) was found within the GPK boxes released in January; the card did not have the "Bukimi Kun" header or the name written in Japanese on the frontside, only the Japanese name on the backside.
FUN FACT #2:
The set was discussed as potentially being the OS1-OS3 compiled GPK sets in "Bukimi Kun"-style instead of the 2014 Series 1 release, but the idea scrapped due to the OS2 Chrome set being released this summer.

BOX BREAK-DOWN REVIEW

Each Bukimi Kun box, with the slogan "GPK 2014 Series 1 Now in Japanese!", comes with 24 packs; 8 cards per pack (PKG001872 box; PKG001871 wrapper). The box yielded one complete set of 132 cards, 1a and 1b through 66a and 66b, with 45 base card extras. The box included 13 black parallel cards (1:2), one gold parallel card (1:24), one bonus card (1:24), one artist autograph card (1:32), but no base or bonus card printing plate (1:93), for a total of 193 cards . Two new images are exclusive to this set, a B1a and B1b image bonus card by Jom Simko, and B2a and B2b image bonus card by Mark Pingitore.

Card image/message for all backs; similar to card backs for the original Bukimi Kun release; cards (non-stickers) intended to be pasted down into a card album.

GARBAGE PAIL KIDS

Garbage Pail Kids were created by the Topps Chewing Gum, Inc. in 1985 by Mark Newgarden and Art Spiegelman, both were art directors and editors for the series, who came up with the concept art (with several hundred concept sketches done by John Pound) and named the characters for the 16 series of GPK. Later, the naming panel also included Len Brown and Stan Hart, with suggestions by the artists, writers and even last minute name changes by Arthur Shorin, the then Pres. of Topps. Artists such as John Pound (acrylic and airbrush) and Tom Bunk (gouache and airbrush), both who completed around 90% of the finished art, were commissioned to create the final art for the card fronts, later joined with James Warhola (oils), David Burke, Bennett, Chet Darnstaedter (Xno), Mae Jeon and Bill Wray (one artwork front). Card backs were drawn by Tom Bunk, Jay Lynch, Howard Cruse, and Richard McGuire who animated the "Flick It" section of the later series. The writing on several different GPK series card backs were from older Topps sets rendered and written by Mark Newgarden, later writers also included Art Spiegelman, Jay Lynch, and John Mariano. Other individuals who assisted by penciling, inking, coloring, or doing lettering were Carole Sobocinski, Grass Green, and Javi Soler. Still others contributed ideas and sketches and such as Len Brown, Frank Santopadre (writer), Stephen Kroninger, Bob Sikoryak, and Paul Karasik. These terribly gifted collaborators made Garbage Pail Kids the most hyped and talked about craze in non-sport card history.

In the late summer of 2003, Topps took advantage of the increasingly nostalgic craze for 1980's games and toys and released seven all-new GPK sets over the next several years through 2011, plus three Flashback sets with orginal GPK artwork content (including 'lost' and 'all-new' material), and a rejuvinated brand-new GPK sets through 2013 with a nostaglic GPK feel, two chrome technoloy releases, and new year-ly sets started in 2014. Art directed originally by John Williams (who became the supervising editor), then by Jeff Zapata (series senior editor, concept artist and writer, sketch card artist), and later by Colin Walton (editor, concept artist and writer, motion card animator, sketch card artist), the new GPK craze is comprised of veteran GPK artists' John Pound, Tom Bunk, James Warhola, Frank Santopadre, and Jay Lynch (who supplied concept and card back artwork - along with Scott Shaw). The sets also includes newcomer GPK artists David Gross, Luis Diaz, Strephon Taylor, John Czop, Pat Glover, Sean Glover, Chris Hebel, Keith Webb, Aron Laikin, Sean Greathead, John Cebollero, Claude St. Aubin, Mark Sparacio, George Wright, Justin Green, Don Perlin, Layron DeJarnette, Brent Engstrom, John Zeleznik, Fred Harper, Jason Edmiston, Mark Pingitore, Fred Wheaton, Neil Camera, Joe Simko, (the first female freelance GPK artist) Junghwa Im, Pat Barrett, Steve Potter; including concept art by Mark MacAulay, and concept art from various artists listed above and by collectors.

Besides the 27 U.S. Garbage Pail Kids series below (one unpublished), further down you will find the GPK~World category which contains various international sets released in other countries - that reflects mainly my own collection or examples of the sets and a GPK~Land category containing other U.S. sets such as the Giant Stickers, Magnet set, Posters set, interviews, articles, wrapper and box charts, and other unique items. In each series section you will find: a Series Introduction explaining the release, a Product Overview outlining the packaging and promotional materials, an Artwork Images section displaying the original final artwork, a Fun Facts & Tid-Bits area which states interesting information about the set, a GPK 101 : Annotated Names section which in depthly explains the name given to the character, a GPK History Section containing information before the set was released, and a Comprehensive Checklist that lists all the cards associated with the set including variations, errors, etc.
