RELEASE PERIOD : JUNE 1988

The 13 Series Garbage Pail Kids set was due on March 7th, 1988 for a June release. The two print runs of the 13th Series (a/k/a OS13 GPK; Original Series) are the same except for their wrappers.  The first print run wrapper has the 25¢ logo and the second print run wrapper has no 25¢ logo. This is the third set to inlude the Flick It! section on the backs of various cards completed by GPK artist Richard Mcguire. With the GPK franchise in its final run from 1987-1988 and the popularity waning, product is harder to locate, often raising the price per pack at certain locations, increasing the demand for these cards by collectors years later.

1. The first set with a GPK Wrapper Character that is different from the sets box image. The remaining Garbage Pail Kids sets, 14th Series through the unpublished 16th Series, will follow this new marketing design -- the wrapper and box colors are the same for this release.

2
. The eigth set to contain characters with the GPK Acronym found within the artwork; the Garbage Pail Kids acronym is located on the fertilizer bag of cards 532a Fertile LIZA and 532b HORACE Manure.

3
. The set also contains the first Partial GPK Acronym found within the artwork; the Garbage Pail acronym is located on the license plate of cards 506a Tire JACK and 506b Crankin' FRANKLIN as GP*13. The '13' can be seen on the final artwork image within the Artwork Gallery page; the thirteen could either be associated with the 13th GPK release or relating to the bad luck number, unlucky #13, considering the subject matter. The original color sketch had the number zero; GP-0.

4.
The only Garbage Pail Kids set with a Sideways, or horizontal, Puzzle.

5
. The Completed Puzzles for the 13th Series are alphabetically sequential with the 12th Series set which contained puzzles 'O' and 'P'. The puzzles are back to 21 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Series sets for card characters 527a Toilet BO and 527b Butt-Bit BRANDON for puzzle 'Q' and 520a Sprinkling JOSE and 520b JAY Spray for puzzle 'R'.

6. The fourth GPK set to have the PEEL HERE Arrow pointing higher up as compared to the previous PEEL HERE arrow; the remaining GPK sets, the 14th Series through the unpublished 16th Series, has the new arrow placement.

7. The only Garbage Pail Kids set to have the same sounding Name and Spelling, just flipped, as another set; the 6th Series cards 246a JOHN John and 539a John JOHN.

8. The fourth Garbage Pail Kids set Without a Light Blue or Light Pink nameplate.

9. The Wrapper was produced in 1987 and the Cards were manufactured in 1988; the product development such as advertising, boxes and wrappers are always printed well in advance of the card sheets being mastered.

1
.
Artist Tom Bunk often had several different Artwork Renditions for his color roughs; below are samples of a few of these original versions with subtle various color and clothing variations for cards 506a Tire JACK and 506b Crankin' FRANKLIN where the car style, color and direction are changed and the hat positions or the absence of; and cards 516a Bubblin' LYNN and 516b Heavin' HEATHER where the character's race is changed and hair color.

2. Artist Tom Bunk also had several different Color Roughs and sketches with drastic renditions; below are samples of a few of these versions drastic variations compared to the final artwork for cards 514a Ampu-TED and 514b HANS Off where the head is being sawed rather than the hand; cards 520a Sprinking JOSE and 520b JAY Spray a vertical version where the hose is positioned through the mouth; and cards 527a Toilet BO and 527b Butt-Bit BRANDON where several objects have been removed or added to the artwork (hate, toilet paper roll vs. comic book, hair color, tank eyes, seat over, et cetera).

3
. Pictured below is a John Pound Pencil Rough sample for cards 503a LOUISE Trapeze and 503b 3-Ring CYRIL and a color rough for cards 519a Paddlin' ADELINE and 519b RIKKI Racket. Since very few un-revised artwork pieces by Pound are available there are very few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over (www.poundart.com).

4. This Tom Bunk GPK final artwork Variant Version was finished in 1988 and reworked for the set, the image was changed from a boy to a girl with a kitchen background added to become cards 536a Scrambled AGGIE and 536b SONNY Side Up. In June of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained a Lost Alternate Art subset for this Tom Bunk artwork piece with the same naming as the OS printed card except the 'b' name was changed from Scrambled AGGIE to Scrambled EGON due to the male Kid subject matter.

5. The Color Rough for James Warhola's artwork for cards 504a COOPER Scooper and 504b JESS Desserts went through several changes from start to finish. Besides a drastic change in clothing and a hat added, the character's tongue has been removed -- from the picture, the left arm/hand does not show up on card and the left eye is missing (instead of the right eye). The layout of the picture became horizontal with a neighborhood and ice cream truck added to the artwork. It is interesting to point out that part of The Eyescream Boy title shows up in the artwork as the name of the ice cream truck.

6. For the pencil and Color Rough of Tom Bunk's artwork for cards 507a Target PRENTICE and 507b Blow HARDY, he was asked to place the GPK banner within the final artwork for the dripping snot; the final artwork can be seen within the Artwork Gallery section.

7. The 13th Series FLICK IT! section artwork on the back of the cards which emulates a flipbook-type effect was completed By Richard McGuire. The puzzle backs were completed by artist Jay Lynch who completed the color roughs and final artwork, assisted by artist Gary Whitney.

8. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK sets which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going. It displayed what artist was working on which concept piece and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 13th Series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: Johnson Smith suicide (Johnson Smith Catalog), kid with dog on hand and arm, bugs swarming head (16th), cigarette lighter, kangaroo killer (unpublished).
