Progressive Global Communication (PGC) was
created in 1997 in Sydney, Australia, it’s principal goal being to assist in
improving all areas of entertainment around the world.
Many people in entertainment are focused on their
specific work project or task, and in the process, can sometimes lose sight of
the bigger picture, of how their work stands as a project, enjoyed and impacting
people all over the planet.
Sometimes, expensive projects can create pressure to ensure a profitable result, and this can lead to an
environment that constrains creativity, with the focus being towards bringing revenue rather than encouraging creativity.
This can be harmful for the creative realizations
of those involved, but ironically, it may also prevent financial success.
Entertainment
in it's many forms, can be very powerful in helping people
to think about their own lives & those of others.
When projects are driven
by a financial directive above other concerns, then many aspects may fall
away, and the Industry could become less successful.
Preoccupation with financial concerns can lead
to less developed productions,
where creative freedom is being constrained by a determination to make a
profitable project and what is believed will be a popular movie.
It’s kind of ironic that
constraints created from a cautious approach, could actually lead to the
problem that is trying to be avoided! Productions concerned too much with
returns can stifle creativity. However, if an organisation can trust in
it’s potential to produce profitable projects and instead makes passion and
inspiration, creativity and cutting edge it’s priority, then wonderful things
can begin to happen.
When we think of entertainment, most of us will
automatically think ‘Hollywood’. The remarkable history of Hollywood & Los
Angeles in this field, makes the connection understandable & justified. But
the questions that all of us concerned with entertainment might also be asking is, why does so much variation in
success come out of this
location? The highs & the lows? The creative genius & the disaster?
Many people who participate in the industry would be able to give valid input,
and all their ideas would have value, whether they be actor, producer, writer,
gaffer or movie goer. Obviously there is much variety in the industry both of
companies and creators through to audiences and different types of product.
We all want different things. We all come from
different situations which cause different topics and styles of entertainment
to hold interest. As we go through different stages in our lives, as the world
changes and things become more popular or less, as topics become subjects to
address, people will rise who see a way to bring about new possibilities.
Entertainment is not meant
to be all serious and deep & meaningful either.
Sometimes the best way to get people to become accepting of something is
through humor. Tyler Perry/ Madea have done much
through humor to develop understanding & respect for African
American culture. 'Will & Grace' has helped many to become more easy with
acceptance of gay people & issues. These pieces of work may be laughed off
as unimportant by some, but realizing how many people watch these
movies and shows, not just in the US , but all over the world, brings home how
important they are. Beneath the humor, there is a contrasting message of
resilience in the face of challenge. These films & programs can make a huge
difference in people’s lives. Inspiration they give certainly, and laughing at
life too.
One of the big questions with entertainment is
who is making what and why? What are the goals of many filmmakers?
Everyone has to have a vision, a purpose.
Unfortunately, some people, including some in entertainment, start off with
ideas, but money crunching of organizations can stifle that vision.
Of course we all want different things, and who
is to say what should or shouldn’t be made? Is horror on the grotesque level of
things like 'Hostel', 'Saw' etc ok? Is extreme violence ok? Is all kinds of sex
& porn in movies ok? And where do we draw the line? As much of the world
has become more permissive and as the Internet has made it easier to access
things, people have experienced more freedom to view what they want. No
longer can people be as easily restricted in what they get to see. So what
should be produced and what should not? A great question for a discussion. I
think what we focus on and create, becomes a part of our life, so while freedom
in creativity is to be encouraged, it is also important to teach
mindfulness of what we create. What we create has bearing on where our
life is heading, and also through the power of media, those who watch it.
That’s why getting a clear idea about our own
vision of what we want to achieve in our life is so important especially if we
are connected to entertainment. Because what we are creating gets watched by
many, many other people. So if we are encouraging messages such as love,
forgiveness, understanding, hope, inspiration, we are sending out very
different energy to the world than products engulfed with anger, revenge,
hopelessness and fear. What will you be remembered for? What impact will you
have on the world?
This isn't to suggest that things should be
suppressed, or that companies can only make 'Bambi' movies! But it is important
to be mindful of what we are creating because it does impact on the direction
of our own life and those who view it. And creating things that are fun but
also respectful to others, is also important.
As technology continues to develop and the
Internet shifts entertainment into a truly world wide creation, Hollywood will
still maintain a strong influence because American culture has promoted this
freedom of thought that people want. Hollywood started so much of the
entertainment that we experience today, so even when products get made
elsewhere, there will still be an allure of the history & base of the LA
industry. While this focus will remain, an international shift is
definitely occuring. To some degree everyone is going to be a writer and
filmmaker, or at least anyone who wants to be.
I
appreciate that you have visited my web site.
I started this website in 1997 and it was created to provide ideas and
direction for creating a better world through the activities of the
entertainment industry. The intrinsic idea behind creating PGC was to recognise
that entertainment in it's many forms creates many opportunities to move people
and the world forward in all sorts of ways. Programs that include various
groups and minorities
can increase people's understanding and respect for each other. Many movies
have inspired us into action or to have a greater awareness for others or the
environment. Various programs be it on tv, on the radio, at the cinema or
streaming through the internet allow people to be exposed to an idea or action
that can improve their own life or the lives of others.
Over the past ten or so years, the world has gone
through a lot of challenges but also much growth. More discussion on how
technology has been changing aspects of media, communication and the
development and sharing of ideas follows in the links from this page.
I hope you find some of the information in this site useful in thinking
about the direction that is taken in the creation of various media products,
either by you or by people or companies you may be connected with in some way.
If you would like my involvement in holding
discussions on some of the issues raised in this site, please email me. I am happy
to provide ideas and input on how projects could be enhanced. Or maybe vision
or inspiration needs developing, providing opportunities to move people
and organisations forward, through lectures or workshops
Thank you for vising my website
