sometimes i tink i really got a good instinct abt ppl & things, other times i feel i ve misjudged quite some ppl.
recently i talked with my fren, who is also the founder of an reputable multimedia co., abt how he & his co-founders built everything up from very humble beginnings. but of coz i m not gonna tell some success story here (can read more paulo ceulho for inspirational stories ahaha!). but reflecting on that conversation later, i find myself having been quite wrong in my initial opinions on someone, even though i ve always kept them to myself.
1 of the founders is a lady, & she s really an exceptional wan with both wits & beauty. but becoz i only know her at a later stage when the co. is already well-established, i just simply profiled her as the usual successful career kinda woman, perhaps oso good at manupilation? (1st bad thing here, i established some sorta of opinion on another without really knowing her; 2nd bad thing here, MCP mentality at play: even i recognised her abilities, i ve to cast doubt on her in other ways)
but there is this 1 thing ----- i always like to see the side of her as a struggling entrepenuer, how she would be like when she was going thro the hardships of a startup last time, to become who she is now (& sadly, no more now, coz of recent turn of things which is at the moment sensitive to discuss). maybe it s coz i cant picture the way i know her now, to fit that of the image of some young, aspiring entrepenuer?
of course, tat is quite impossible. see, u can neber really know a person at a different stage of his/her life, unless u r there at that time. it s not a movie u can watch it thro the end, anytime u wish to start. & in real life, my opinions on her changed a lot thro time & contact w her, which i ve absolutely no way to explain how so in a few paragraphs. nevertheless, i ve been very wrong on my initial opinions on her, which in the 1st place, i ought not have any without knowing her better.
btw, wat is it my fren told me tat gave me all these thoughts? well, it isnt any heartrendering story, u see. jus tat he told me last time they couldnt afford a laptop for giving presentations to clients, so 2 of them always got prepared much earlier than the meeting time, 1 would carry the whole CPU, another would carry the monitor, & travel there on a double-decker.
& she s the one carrying the CPU.
now i tink i can really picture her handling that CPU (although it s still my 1-sided imagination hahaha ... ). ppl jus dun become who they are now like this. maybe i shouldnt form opinions, privately or not, on other ppl so readily in the future. good instincts or not, people is jus 1 entity prone to be misjudged, if anyone s supposed to be judging in the 1st place.

after watching John Q yesternite, i was waiting for the mrt train home. there were 3 teenage gals waiting near me too. when the train arrived, we waited at the same door for it to open. but before it did, i heard spontaneous exclamation from the 3 of them.
"OH MY GOD!!!"
then they muttered things like "let s go somewhere else" & move on to the next door.
of coz, i ve not a single idea why so (esp. not wanting to get in the same cabin with a dashing fine man like me *shameless* hahaha!). i soon realised the reason. as the door opened up, my eyes met the whole cabin packed with foreign workers on their way home on a sunday nite. yesh, it was a sea of darkness that was awaiting me in there. but long before i made the visual connection, an intense aroma rushing out of the opened door, that momentarily drowned my senses, had already completed the story for me.
not wanting to a copycat, i did not follow the girls but bravely move into the packed cabin. in the sea of darkness, it comforts me a little seeing the girls didnt end up any better in the next cabin. it jus reminded me of trapping in a building of evil-deads in Resident Evil. in this west-bound mrt train on a sunday nite, we ve nowhere to hide.
honestly, i think wat i jus wrote really makes me a insensitive racist. i ve to condemn myself for such mentality arent rite. but i rather do so than be politically correct but dishonest abt wat i say on my own blog. hey at least i did try appearing a sensitive sporean, maintaining a poker face all the while, unlike the gals who has shown their reactions outfront (which i ve nothing against, by the way)!

oh ok, dun luff at me, once again i sit infront of the tv to watch this oldies programme targeted at my mum.
this week guest star 高凌风 gao ling feng is really entertaining, from his nick, 青蛙王子 qing wa wang zi (frog prince), can imagine he is the dance-no-stop kinda singer last time, with so many catchy fast songs, with titles like 燃烧吧!火鸟 (burn! firebird) 冬天里的一把火(fire in the winter) 姑娘的酒窝笑笑 (errr ... how to translate? lady 's dimples smile smile?). kinda offbeat titles & lyrics but it makes it so funny to listen, plus the out-of-date performance style, & 2 ah lian looking chio gals dancing behind (they r always young however old gao has become now, coz they r the 6th generation oready! see, he always has 2 gals ah zhu ah hua on stage w him! & no, i din joke, the names r really ah zhu ah hua).
of coz, as a seasoned entertainer, besides his stage charisma, he s oso quickwitted & hilarious to watch during interviews, mimicking current pop idols like jay chou, & with such strong dose of cynicism heheehe!
as far as i know, he s only got 1 really sad & moving song, that stands out from all the fast cheeky tracks. he was in tears performing it jus now. the composer of the song wrote it after his father is gone, at that pt gao oso jus lost his father. thus they co-wrote the song. this s 1 of those songs so nice that, even u can never feel too deeply abt the subject matter at such a young age, u cant wipe it off from the mind totally. listening to it so many years later now, it really can bring to the eyes, tears which can neber be known to the kid las time who simply like the song for its melody.

suddenly i ve this question: this term 'cliffhanger' has always been used to describe the end of an episode where they stop rite at the most exciting part, so that the audience ll be left mouth wide wide, & obediently tune in to the next episode. but how come it s called 'cliffhanger' (& not clothes hanger, eg)?
of coz, having just written the 'screenplay' for GATCHAMAN VS GATCHAMAN EVIL, i would ve immediately associate it with the possible fact that, in the past they always ve the villians kick the hero/heroine off some cliff, leave them hanging there & stop that episode. since they keep doing the same thing over & over again (until the audience get tired of it, then they start to ve the hero/heroine hanging off aeroplane, tall coconut trees, etc), so when they need to invent a term to describe such a cinematic moment, they just called it a cliffhanger.

usually when i werk in my room, i dun need to see but ll know what my mum s doing (glued to the TV), where she s sitting, the exact spot (the armchair shifted infront of the TV, sorta middle of the living room), & even her pose (resting bck relaxingly, either awake watching the recorded tv series, or fell asleep oready but still listening to the TV ... dun ask me how).
yesterday nite is 1 of those nites in the week there isnt any programmes she likes, so i know it when i dun hear any TV sound in my room. when i walked out of the room to pee, my eyes wandered to the armchair in the middle of the living room as a habit to see if she has fall asleep there (& if so, i ll proceed as habit to make pig snoring sound to wake her up ahahhaaha ...). but it was different yesternite, she isnt there. but i found her immediately. she has pulled a chair rite infront of the fishtank of the pair of luohan fish, even though she s bckfacing me, i could tell how engrossed she was, staring at the fishtank,like she s watching the TV.
i jus dunnoe why it felt so amusing to me at that sight, & yesh i ve long believed tat the fishtank s gonna replaced the TV set for her (good too, coz she wont be sitting infront of tv all the time) ... but not in such an way tat the fishtank functions exactly like the tv now.
ok ... now i wont try throwing in a punchline like 'the 2 luohan fishes swimming in the tank is more interesting than any programmes on the tv set', just for the sake of it ... hehehehe.

todae watch the jap anime millenuim actress, by the director of perfect blue. i m oready mentally prepared for this director s surrealistic style, lotsa jump cuts, sudden change of scenes. in the last movie, i was completely throw out of the flow of events, passively following his lead. i din like it for perfect blue too much, but for a story like millenuim actress, this abstract style comes down quite ok to me. it s quite moving in the end too, surprisingly. it s not an easy story to summarise so i save my effort, can read the filmfest booklet ehheehe ...
then later in the evening, i watch another movie, on vcd my sis bought home. it s extreme sci-fi crap, the HK Wesley movie 蓝血人 lan xue ren. actualli i wanted to catch it in the cinema, coz me & my bro used to read many Wesley 卫斯理 books las time. we used to find his adventures engaging, although now the ideas seemed so run-out-of-mill. this movie was so many years in the making that i tot they kill off the project oready. the only thing tat impressed me is the cg creature effects was certainly well merged onto the live action (or maybe it s on vcd so i cant really judge too well).but the already badly written dialogues on bullshit scientific theories, became worst when the HK actors did them in english.
1 good show 1 bad show, but aniway i enjoyed both. yes, even Wesley, coz it s jus the family getting to watch some cantonese movie, even my mum wan watch as long as it s in cantonese. oso, me & my sis 's bf can criticized at every stoopid plotlines coming along, got kaki criticised more shoik!

yesterdae chanced upon the new hobby shop, action figure in bugis. there s this really nice small soft toy of totoro, for such good quality & going at S$24.90! there s only 1 left for the big totoro, & quite a few for the 2 smaller wans packaged together. i think the salegal there read my mind totally when i m so torn whether i should grab the last totoro, & unconsciously walk so many rounds in the shop. hope she s not laughing secretly at some big boy behaving so silly over a soft toy (oh com on, it s not just a soft toy! it s TOTORO!!!).

my fren sonny, who s more experienced & skilful a 3d animator than me, recently wrote an article on ... hmmmm ... had a discussion with my bro & his wife after watching kandahar tat nite. coz my bro, even more the cynic than i m, make a proposition (yah, so we can start an intellectual debate in the middle of a bus trip) that religion is 'bad' (intellectual debate, yes, but being the cheena kind of ppl, our vocab range very limited) ... it s the roots of evil coz it exists & thus existed all those wars, conflicts & oppressions. & he s basing it after wat we saw in the semi-docu kandahar, how islam is misused by 'bad' political/tyrant kinda ppl to exert control on innocents, making life so miserable for them, all in the name of god.

it turned out me & sis-in-law is on the same side this time (no worry, i m sure my bro wont get any severe consequences over this bck home, coz they r a loving couple hahaha). acting diplomatic/objective/visionary etc ... , i said that even religion has been abused by some, it has oso done much good in the hands of many others. the problem is in Man himself, not religion. just like law can be abused by some (eg, rich bastard bribes the way outta punishment), doesnt mean we take away law, coz without law everything s gonna be a mess.

but then thinking again, probably there s just way too much injustice, abuse & oppression in this world, that somehow we cant blame many ppl who cant help losing faith. oh yes, i do admire those who dont, but many are just ordinary Man with ordinary failings. & i think those who believe in goodness, and strong enuff to standby it are so much more precious ppl to have in this world (than ppl like me who can onli debate abt it (hahaha!) & than those who believe in goodness, but only for the sake of self-protection, hides themselves fr the reality with no courage nor experience in the face of evil).

but as i ve said, it s all but a debate on a bus ride home. none of us debating in that bus is the great man who can change this world, nor do we aspire to be one at all.

finally got my demo VHS ready, tmr send it on a jetplane (yah i m leaving on a jetplane automatically played in my brain mp3 player now) carry my hopes & dreams fly fly away ... so grateful that i can get help fr not just 1 but 3 sources when i ve problems outputting the damn animations. all thankx to mak, kelly & akiki ... wah all 3 from different places helping me manzzz, very grateful! heaven s can be a lil trying, jus dun make it too easy for me sometimes, but i still managed to find some way out being persistent.
now, the rest is no longer in my hands, (it s in somebody 's mouth ahahha ... coz to put in few good words for me & much of the rest is dependent on some greater forces beyond me oready), jus ve to keep my cool & wait in patience.

jus came bck from our family event ... 扫墓 sao mu ... paying respects to the late family members every year. every year i go, i keep coming out with ideas like burning incense sticks online (japan has that sorta thing), this year my idea is to be more sincere. that they should build a air-conditioned computer center where we ll only go. then down there we would use com stations & enter the serial nos/id/etc of our late relatives, & key the nos of incense sticks & the amt of paper money to burn for them. then there ll be bangladesh workers who really go and burn them (unlike the japan system, all virtual, not sincere). ahahaha ... i noe i noe ... i m really crappy, unfillial, racist (think bangladesh werkers can exploit) & still dare talk abt sincerity! but it s jus to past time while waiting in all that smoke ...
then i noticed that while my granddad s urn has his full name engraved, my grandma 's only has her husband surname, her maiden name is ignored. i know this all along but somehow neber thought much abt it. my sis-in-law said it has always been so ... & thinking now, i felt strange that this conservative custom carry on till this age, where woman are all talking abt sexual equality/liberation/list goes on. & it isnt jus chinese, but in the west too, woman lose their maiden names after marrying. sis-in-law said the only improvement is that they put it as liew(husband surname)-chua (wife surname) xxxx xxxx(wife name).

in line with my support of local werk, so take a look at the latest, highest quality so far local cg TV productions simeon rex. yup it s not without flaws, and personally i dun really enjoy such stories, but this s really something if the pilot episode could pull off a series. these guys carry on productions even with the company at the brim of collapse. & i can tell the center of focus on quality of werk over anything else. jus hopes the animation arent too bad, coz nothing moving is available for viewing yet (bad animation s highly possible factor to kill off any appeal). i m a bit ashamed tat with all those aspirations, i ve failed to push harder for things to happen in my job, even it s neber really within my control. & now i jus ve to sorta 'live & let die'.

kandahar isnt at all boring afterall : ) i m very tired the whole of yesterdae & was worried a semi-documentary d be the final thing to break my record for sleeping in a movie. but i guess if i wasnt informed beforehand it s a semi-docu, i wont noe after seeing it coz it runs like a drama. however, it s those kinda films tat showed the those real life human conditions, the fact tat u noe it s really happening & such horrible living conditions existed to real ppl at the bck of the head, dun make u feel too good after the film. i tink my bro cant stand it at the part showing the red cross center, where many different man who lost their limbs are shown 1 by 1, trying all means to ask the docter for a prosthetic limb (no, it s not like it s raining/snowing then the men cry & cry & beg & beg ... then lightning flash ... no sad majestic orchestra soundtrack ). it s very uncomfortable to see ppl living like tat i guessed (try not to sound like preaching & make it sound like another 'save the children, liberate the women' film), so how to say leh ... it s not an enjoyable film lor! hahaaha ... dun go watch it ... want to get touched, watch jap tv series/korean love stories better hahahaha!
as for gourmet baby, i tink the craftsmanship s ok, the actors done their jobs & film language is appropiately used ... but since i dun wish to condemn local werks (while i myself is making local werk too), if not support, i shall keep my mouth shut. but i tink it s jus that i ve developed a personal issue against this filmmaker, who is now living in California(???), after watching her short film.

thx to mak i got my demo on VHS finally. & she find this v good compressor freeware for mpeg conversion tmpgenc. unfortunately, like the heavens jus wan to make things a lil more trying for me, the VHS dunnoe y jus dun ve the correct aspect ratio. so there s no choice for me now ... but to tamper with the connections of my mum 's VCR ( oh the sacred connections to her source of joy in life ... recording all the HK/spore soap series on the same timeslot every channel! ) & the dvd player & get the output done again myself. las nite i werked on it kinda late but still dun get it. tonite i m gonna do the ultimate! direct connection from the DVD to the VCR! dun tell me like this oso cannot manzz! i ll give myself 1 more nite.

output my demoreel on vcd this morning (on that unpredictable cd writer). of coz, i ve no great expectation on vcd quality image but then it really feels disappointing the output of my professional werk dun match up to tat of my student werk. i m talking in terms of this difference when outputting to tv screen when things always look brighter & more contrasty than the com monitor. i ve expected the prob during production long ago but i ve jus no means to check & ensure, & they r for broadcast somemore!
all those crap businessmen outthere, misusing the reasoning behind doing it creative & simple, the priority to ideas/story over technological prowess ... they neber really noe wat that means, nor in their nature believe anything they said.
of coz those things r very true to me too. i myself as a student las time stick to those beliefs, shunning super realistics yet liveless 3d creations & in the process made ugly exchanges with quite some ppl (even professional ppl then) who spend much of their professional lives doing so. but speaking in terms of animation, creative & simple dun jus comes like another southpark, it s not easy money for opportunists, it is not explioting artists werking underhand coz it s 'simple' ( i seriously like to noe how much they pay scriptwriters for simple things like southpark, coz everyone wan a southpark, but they jus dunnoe they ve to com out w somthing else on their own coz ppl oready make the money outta this & thinking of something else), & producing simple style doesnt necessary means the process isnt as complex as sophiscated, realistic style (if not harder in some cases). & ideas/story over technological prowess doesnt mean no minimum technological requirements, low tech dun equals no tech. if the intention is to bet on something tat generates $$$$ & more $, with a god-send free/low cost plan, dream on & good luck if u strike on 1. rest-assured u r mere good luck & may the glory live for a longer while, coz it ll never sustain. it s too simple for u to monopolise, for any other one not to do it easily, maybe a business contract can jus hold it off so long b4 it s open to all. too bad the 1st ppl who makes money out of nothing fr the internet cant replicate their good luck no more (of coz, it s foresight definitely for them, the rest tat follows in may jus be visionless folks babbling on principles the pioneers tried & proven, like their own. yah, there r oso those who r creative enuff to build a bit here & there on it).

with a long queue of books in my wishlist (tat ll most probably remain in that list forever), i saw & bought the book on spiderman movie, titled behind the mask of spiderman. i dun usually buy such making-of books on movies, coz most of them are picture books of film stills. but then spidy jus looks too cool in his designer costume on this cover, i guessed, for me to resist. it s full color, got it at 35+ after discount, lotsa nice pictures, much concept arts/designs, & surprisingly pages & pages of text. hopefully they ve substance/contents, but aniway i din buy the book for that :P

oso dunnoe y my liking in kylie milogue 's songs grows as her new albums released. in chinese, her comeback to fame after so many years is called 咸鱼返生 (salted fish comes bck to life in chinese, dead bodies is nicked as salted fish, a kind of chinese preserved food). i m not very well versed in the terms used in music, but her tunes are so delightfully cheesy & the lyrics somehow reminds me of james bond movies titles (live & let die, tmr never dies, the world is not enough, in spore we oso got money no enuff & i not stupid), watever the reason hehehe. yah & the neverending remix & remix, 1 more cheesy than the other, sometimes complete w over-the-top names (the usual cliches but sometimes it s really funny like superchumbo mix reminds me of some macDonald or Burger King special meals ahhahaha ... ).

recently they ve a programme on xinyao 新谣 , songs tat ll written by local ethusiasts ard 80s. they r like the pioneers of the local songwriting/singing scene. i oso ve special emotional connections with xinyao coz i m oso crazy abt those songs las time, esp i m fr a SAP skool where the envirionment still very chinese. jus now TV got this variety show on old songs & when i find tat todae s programme s on xinyao, there s a funny feeling, beside feeling nostalgic.

update on the 2 luo han fishes 罗汉鱼, the most exciting episode las week was that the more agressive one on the left side on the tank (call him 左金刚 left kingkong) jumped over the separating plastic panel to pay a lil visit to his archrival 右金刚 right kingkong one day, only to be discovered immediately by my mum, who quickly put it bck, b4 a death fight could break out. how it did tat, nobody noes. such aggressive species.
now i discovered even fish got personalities ... or fish-alities. 左金刚 is always the aggressor, easily irritated, challenging everything tat comes into sight, while 右金刚 is the take-it-easy kind (but that dun means it doesnt fight ... fighting jus seems their nature). no matter how i teased it, it jus heckcare. noth like to pile up the pebbles at the bottom of the tank to the front, to create some personal space for themselves, so they can sorta hide behind the pile. they sure r the most irritable & interesting fish i ever ve in my home. but i still dun like them much.
i jus wan to see 左金刚 do that unbelieveable jump with my own eyes.

jus as i m seduced by lumix, then i saw the advert on the papers for nikon coolpix 2500. there s this swivel lens tat let u turns the lens at angles ... & the design looks cool ... & yesh it s definitely gimmicks & toys ... but i m a big boy :P hahahahaa ... at $599 ... good good, like this i ll neber need to fix on one & buy any in the end & i ll save up the money. the only good thing being frickle-minded.

the use of cg substitute performing humanly impossible movements in action sequences is the latest cinematic thrill (& toy for the filmmakers/action choreographer/blahblah). although still not perfect (still can tell it quite easily many times) but i see liao very shiok hhaaha ... jus watch blade 2 ... & the above technique was quite abundantly utilised. i tot spiderman d be so smart to use this method coz he s all masked & costumed ... jus the perfect character to do cg substitute, easier than a believeable human being. i tot wat i saw in spidy 's trailer d be the best so far. but then blade 2 even ve blade himself switching to & fro between live actor & cg stunt double so generously, even with quite closed up shots. see, got idea oso mus do faster, if not audience get bored liao after the nth show on that effect. of coz, no matter how, as a whole spidy effects d still be more massive i believe. i jus hope matrix brother-brother director got something new in their bag for 2 & 3, & not even used a single bullet time sequence animore. i tink i wait too long liao, ve a weird feeling tat matrix 2 & 3 ll ve nothing new to offer animore. but i certainly do hope i m very wrong : )
i still remember this line i like so much, when keanu reeves jus finish his first martial arts fighting lesson, he said in this funny tone: i know kunggg fuuuu!!!

jus read from collateral chaos, discreet s releasing plasma web3d package, both standalone & plugin for 3d max.
1st time i see web3d software supports character skinning, weight vertices & bones ... i always ve something against web3d packages like pulse, cult, but plasma seem to be the wan to make it for web 3d. exciting indeed. discreet s really werking close w macromedia on this, it s gonna dominate the web3d scene manz.

jus saw the lumix series digicam on dislay booth at funan. yah i noe the ad 's very nice, ayumi oso nice, but i jus tot it s mere packaging. then jus now i the actaul thing, then i feel this desire to possess it hahahhaa .... lumix F7 i wan i wan! according to the talk-no-stop salesman, besides all the tech advancement, it oso boast of easier viewing user interface .... yeah he show me how convenient it s over the norm way of viewing the pic in memory ... then it s made of alluminium alloy very very lite. at 799 ... hmmm i m really tempted!

big shot 's funeral ( 大腕 ) is really funny & meaningful. i esp like the part with all the lunatics in an asylum, yet talking jus like the average hardsell business know-all kind ppl we sometimes ve to listen to often, going on & on on multimedias, properties, markets & trends, like they really s the only one who knows wat s happening. the articulated conmen. what a satire. every ridiculous means to squeeze in advertising slot in the big shot 's funeral, which s exaggerated but not necessarily untrue tat there are such ppl. jus look at the things these guyz do ... 1 day i ll be 1 of them ... will i? though secretly, sometimes i wish i m as shameless & quickwitted as them.

the original broadcast version has got sound done by a 3rd party, much to my disappointment. but unfortunately, that s beyond my control then. las weekend, while rushing out my demoreel, i managed to add in my own sound & music, much closer to my original idea. but since it s more like an edit-to-sound, so the original ending is dropped. actaully both endings arent to my liking, not properly executed, but i would do nothing more to it now, it shall stand as it is.
& i m glad my sis told me she likes this ducky 's hao lian attitude. glad i can get this cocky character thro to her.
