high res click
another color concept on the climax scene of my animated short. click on above image for high res version.
this is actaully a second revision on this scene already. i ve shown it to her at its near-finished stage, all is fine except that DiDi the kid in the scene, reminded her of E.T. in the handdrawn version (E.T. turns out to be her childhood nitemare). i composited the 3D version of DiDi into this version here, unfortunately i must admit that he s reminscent to E.T. somehow still. maybe it s the slightly longer-than-norm neck & the bigger-than-norm head. what an interesting discovery.

i ll be putting up all the color concepts i ve done so far together on a page soon. still working on it.

i've been having sleepless nights just thinking about owning a Hasselblad. Just as Gatchaman have said the exorbitant price range is well beyond my financial capabilities. I'll just have to make do with my Nikon fe10 and shelf that on the big wish list. There's also another medium format camera the Mamiya, and I really like the tagline that it carries : " Master of the medium ". Cool play with words.

i dont like to admit it ... but ... but ... i m drawn into the taiwan teen soap, meteor garden! since the 1st episode, i know i would be sitting infront of the tv every mon to wed, 2230 hr to 2330 hr. & i suffered mild withdrawal missing the 2nd episode. it s a blessing i ve not developed any craze for F4 though even so.
i cant explain my liking for the series, didnt really try to. it must be i m too lonely i think. but i ll grow out of it, i ll.

Hasselblad would be a dream camera for me, i guess. i would never own one coz it s so ex. after seeing the amazing pics it produced (of course i cant take away the photographer 's credit for that too) in TP grad show by 1 of the Visual Comms grads, i was ignorant enough to think that the photos are digitally retouched. only this evening did blaue reiter tell me they are taken with a medium format camera! he found it out fr that grad himself. i ve seen these sorta cams around but never really know abt them.
the film is 70mm & the price of the cam is 4-digit. alamak.

... 怎么说

just finished watching the bollywood film asoka, abt the this evil prince & later tyrant king who turned good & embraced buddhism. pretty neat movie, although a bit draggy on the love parts but i even enjoyed the dancing sequences which used to appear really stoopid to me last time. i ve wanted to watch it during its run in the cinemas but it was only screened at some ulu ones. after watching it finally, i m more keen to watch the one which ran for oscars best foreign film, pandaavas or did i remember the name wrongly?

update: the bollywood film should be lagaan, thankx to hweeling for correcting such a stoopid mistake ahaha! now i m pondering what s with pandaavas? why did this word come into my mind? hmmm ...

read in the papers today, so, desperate jobless guys & gals are offering to pose topless or in bikinis for model/talent agencies? thank you buddha, guanyin or jesus, i m not in such jeopardy (hmmm ... must add the word 'yet'). & no, those are not really ppl with no dignity looking for easy money, they are all very keen to prove that, so i ve read. although they do ve a strange way to make that point, by asking for quite a credible sum of 10K or more for what they offered to do.

see, they dont do it any-old-how. they make sure they are paid a lot & nobody dare to label them cheap. just like nobody would look down on those HK stars in the 90s who kept stripping until they made it to stardom.

but right now, the only question i m seriously pondering over is: would i ve that sorta courage if i m forced into those circumstances too? when there is a family to feed & bills to pay & it s not only myself who is suffering if there s no job no money? would i be able to bring myself to do that?

maybe i do admire certain qualities of those ppl in some unusual ways afterall, maybe.

finally bought sun yanzi 's album yesterdae before watching panic room. i ve only listened to it for like 3 times only, so at the moment the songs that registered & left me a likable impression are dong shi, ֱ4ֱ zhi lai zhi wang & wo xiang. as for the sentimental ballads, if i m not wrong, there is 2 in this album (?), i think i ve to listen a few more times to know if i like them. there isnt one like ں tian hei hei, which i like instantly upon listening. but that s understandable, such songs dont come by easy i guess.

yesterday was one of those days to remind me imperfections always exist even in good things to come. haha! it s great to be watching panic room finally but i ended up missing a little bit of the beginning. then later in the nite back home, i discovered the cd casing of my sun yanzi 's album is damaged at the center part (common thing to happen, the part where the cd is held, the center pieces break off easily). really unlucky for me to get a flawed one since ppl like me hardly buy cd albums. i reckon it must be some retribution on me for downloading too much mp3.

the only good i can make of this, is that at least i know that since there ll still be repercussions for wrongdoings, there must also be rewards for good deeds. isnt that good? oh yes, if only i can be sure i ve done more good than bad. haha!

it has been a long long while since i last took a written test since my skooling days. i relived that kinda pressure on friday during this selection test for a training attachment programme to japan. although i must admit i m a little taken by surpise that it consisted a demanding 'speed & concentration' test, rather than solely on my animation/artistic skills, it turned out to be a tense yet strangely thrilling ordeal to go through.

of course, it s the same kind of pressure but today i can handle it much better i guess. then again, that s because i m doing it under a whole new situation with a much different perspective on success or failure. during my skool days, passing that paper was everything, failing can be think of as the end of the world? as for now, success meant much much more to me in other ways than when i scored in my papers last time, & i pursue it most relentlessly; but setbacks are also no longer that fearful, even i still dread those moments when i got to pull myself together again.

too bad i cant talk abt the 'interesting' speed tests i ve gone through here. but at least now i know roughly what to practise at home before a selection test should i ever go through another again, however ridiculous it seems, i guess it still makes sense in some ways.

i ve been doing some serious land reclamation on my writing table this whole morning. i ve got 2 tables in my room -- table A housing my 2 workstations & table B which i m supposed to use for writing/drawing, etc. unfortunately, it seems that i ve heavily abused the usage of table B for storage purposes instead. there s such a massive accumulation of things (& mails especially) on table B that the available surface area of the table is 0%. i seem to be having lotsa new things (that i cant really say what things come to think of it, but i just keep getting lotsa new things) all the time, & i ve not even time to go through them, not to say abt organising them properly. so the easiest way is simply to throw them on my table B!

but living on this lil island, the awareness of efficient land & space management is built into my system. Thus, this morning i ve diligently carried out my big reclamation operation. well, actaully there s more to it than mere reclamation. i also sorted out the 'illegal foreign workers' (useless bronchures, outdated mails, bills, etc) & get rid of them, identified the 'foreign talents' (books, magazines i ve bought yet left lying all the while on the table) & settled them properly, & lastly pacified the 'locals' (stationery, zines & books i ve taken out from their original place to use but neber place bck properly) by allocating them in better places. now, all of sudden, my table top is so spacious, not to mention speckless too!

this is no less satisfaction than nation building i must say ahaha! but at the bck of my mind i know the root of the problem is still untouched. very soon, the table will still be full of crap & things ll still get dusty again. it s good that there r certain problems in life which can be settled once & for all, never to return. however, there r oso those that would keep coming bck, & required my utmost vigilance in constantly overcoming them. these arent usually tricky or difficult problems, but to me they seemed the tougher ones coz most demanded for my long term dedication & discipline. one success is simply follow by another challenge.

if i happen to be longwinded on such a simple subject, maybe it s all summarised in the little prince, when the little one talks abt his constant effort to rid his tiny plant of the weed called baobabs.

danny wrote in dailybread:
gatchaman, thanx for spreading good word about Akina around the www. yeah, she's THE J-POP QUEEN way before the Ayumis and Namies and the 3rd J-pop wave! it's not surprising to hear people go, "Akina? didn't she committ suicide? isn't she dead? she's very old alredi right? very ugly now right? can she still sing?"

she's had a very long and rich singing career. she went thru so much drama, ups and downs, twists and turns, as an artiste. she sold millions and millions of copies of singles and albums and swept every single J-music-industry award during her heydays, grossing one of the highest incomes in Japan as an artiste. she also sold something like a miserable 7,000 copies for her second last album at her pit low. but that was a good 3 years ago. now she's really back with a vengeance. and her fans worldwide are delighted 'cos we've always thought it impossible for people to be crazy over other J-pop artistes if they've heard Akina. she's really the best product J-pop has ever churned out.

although i m not a diehard fan of akina (nor ll i be a diehard fan to anyone at all), but it s really fascinating to find another who shares this liking for something that is a part of your personal memory ... just as u slowly begin to believe that ppl ll only stare bck at u with a ? look, making u feel really ridiculous, if u r to mention abt some outdated/weirdo things u once adored yet forgotten.

but for now, i ll ve to refrain from further indulging in sentimentalities & memories, maybe until i hit 45 or 50? now is not the time for such yet, i guess.

well, maybe not unless i need some inspiration for a story to make my next animated short ... ? what a good excuse i ve found for myself, haha!

yah, blaue reiter, i havent went thro every single frame but so far those that i saw is exact to the final production. i dun think it s those kinda 'post-production storyboards' which we r all guilty of doing in our student time, just to satisfy our lecturers (ahaha!) but probably it s the one at the more refined stage. maybe after they fixed down all the character design, bgd design then he drew this version for actual production (i think they need to be this exact with the boards). besides, they would need more than 1 of such a thick book to include all the early development by miyazaki himself. & with the full control miyazaki has over his production (m sure he ll make them re-do & re-do until he get what he wanted in the storyboard), plus his experience over so many feature length animations, it s not impossible he could nail those things down exactly to the storyboards.
but then again, it s still my guess, how could i possibly know their actual production?

Just as Gatchaman have said, spam mail is pure anathema to me alright. In fact I think it wouldn't be wrong to call it the biggest scourge of the email system since the internet was invented. I have zero tolerance for any spam mail, and that includes email with cheesy friendship messages, cute and cuddly bear pictures, stories of killer spiders, you get the idea.

Anyway, I got the Hayao Miyazaki's storyboard book for Mononoke Hime at Kino this morning. Flipping through, I started to get more and more amazed ( to the extent that it bordered on suspicion ) that the composition of each and every single storyboard panel in the book reflects, with complete accuracy, to that of the animation frames which appears in the movie, the composition of the shot, the framing, etc. I couldn't nail even one that had any noticable difference. That struck me as rather odd. Certainly at storyboard stage there's always changes made, albeit small ones. Was the entire book just a "traced out" version of the movie ? I would feel very cheated if it is. Hope i'm wrong. Perhaps Gatchaman you could check your copy of the Spirited Away book.

stoopid kinokuniya ... they just put away some books i want to buy during the anniversay storewide sales. i aim aim the very thick dictionary-like storyboard book of miyazaki 's spirited away for so long, promising myself to get it for once, to look at how the master did the entire storyboarding for the feature length animation by himself, even if it s still ex after the discount. in fact, there s a storyboard book like this published for each of his animation. too bad, i just cant find them yesterday anywhere in the store.

well, sure, there s a possibilty it s sold out before i m there but it s highly impossible coz these arent the usual picture books that fans would grab. no matter how, in order to make myself feel better, i need an outlet for my displeasure, so i shall make kino take all the blame for all these injustice i ve suffered muahahahahahaa ...

i did end up buying this chinese/japanese/english book on the internet folklore, if the world were a village of 100 people. i think most ppl would ve recieved this chain mail before, except ppl like me who s totally disgusted with the idea of chain mails (i do know i m not alone on this though, ahaha! rite, blaue reiter?). either i let my frens know to leave my email addy out for such emails, or even if i do recieve them, i usually jus delete away without reading, same goes for big attachments of jpegs, mpegs, .exe, etc. ok, serve me right, now i m paying for what i could ve recieved free ahaha!

update: finally got the spirited away storyboard book just now at kino heehee! erhmmm ... what should i say? why didnt i simply open my mouth & asked yesterday leh? haha, this is shameful.

todae i m gonna post abt ... no, aha, not episode II! coz i said too much abt it in other ppl 's blogs already ehhe. anyway, most ppl ll still go see a star wars movie, whether they would curse or praise it after that.

i m surprised to read that akina nakamori is still in the j-pop scene after all these years, from danny 's dailybread. there was a j-pop craze long before this recent wan, when i m still like primary 5 or 6. akina was like the hottest female singer rival to seiko matsuda. it s impossible to know what s going on in my head at that time, but i remember i was really crazy abt all these sweet lil female j-pop stars, even though i ve never listen to any of their songs before. yup, last time i ve got no money to buy their cassettes (not even sure if they are available actually).

it s funny also how i can be so crazy abt them merely looking at their pictures. all i did was collecting this HK magazine ʱ hao shi dai (good generation) that s basicly pages & pages of jap stars color pics, they dont even bother to write much. i think i also collected laminated pics & photos of them. male stars i dun really care, except for this group called checkers who signature dress code is what else but checkers. i used to think they r really cool.

now i look at the pics of akina 's new album cover ... gosh ... this s not the akina i remembered manzzz. but i m still glad to read news abt her new album instead of her suicide attempts or other negative publicity. well, not that i really care abt her much but since she s part of my childhood memories now, i would like to hear good things abt her too.

it s a strange kinda connection somehow. yet it s still abt myself, not her. heheh!

i just ordered an alpha male action figure from stikfas. dunnoe if i m again the last wan to know abt this local toy which has made waves internationally that even george lucas heard of it. i used to build gundam model kits & those resin cast models during my army days but now i wouldnt ve the time & spirit to do it already. so, slowly it cuts down to merely buying ready-made figurines, & slowly i dun even buy any coz i slowly learnt to percieve it as too expensive a pleasure.

i thought alpha male is ready-made too but it isnt. almost end up not buying coz i m feel lazy to build it. but then again, it s just simple stuffs (compared to what i used to do), so no sweat i guess! also, to give myself a greater sense of purpose in my actions, i would like to think that it s rather patriotic to spend on toys in such hard times for the sake of supporting local creativity & entreprenuers. haha!

see, that s the problem with grown-ups. do i ve to make such a fuss to justify myself when i simply want a toy to play, or to do something to make myself happy?

i bet the kids wont bother, as long as they ve fun.

yesterdae during the mama 's day makan session, discovered a fish with a strange & funny name, 八叔鱼 (ba shu yu) or 8th uncle 's fish. it s one of the special dishes for the day in this chinese food restaurant 三盅两件 (san zhong liang jian), no idea how i can translate this name.

i find that the menu in a chinese restaurant can always be a good source for stoopid luffs, the ones that ve english translation to the chinese dish names. too bad i cant remember those ridiculous translations now. but the dessert one i remember! it s supposed to be 雪蛤 (xue ha) something something, a cold sweet soup w red dates & the 雪蛤 (xue ha), which is some transparent chewy thingee. the english translation for 雪蛤 (xue ha) on the menu is like 'snow frog from america' or 'america snow frog' ?

all of us at the table are well-learnt ppl (ahhaha!), although we ve not a single clue what 雪蛤 (xue ha) is, we are wise enough not to believe the menu 's translation. with extreme calmness, we continued enjoying the delicious dessert of which 1 of the ingredients could possibly be some kinda snow frog (errkkkss!). on the other hand, the young curious mind of mine cannot ignore the dying urge to explore the unknown. i ve to find out what 雪蛤 (xue ha) is. & who else but my mum d be the best person to ask!

it turned out that my mum s the sole surviving member of our family who has actual contact with 雪蛤 (xue ha)! her memory on that experience is failing but she faintly remembers that it s some kind of cold climate worm/insect, which she had helped, when she was young, to peel the flesh out from the shell so that it can be consumed/preserved (whatever!). however, she could never really describe how it looks like, thus casted some doubts over her testimony. the true identity of a 雪蛤 (xue ha) remains a mystery. since i ve finished the whole bowl, i rather think that it s like the 冰山雪莲 (bing shan xue lian) or 'ice mountain snow lotus', a kind of precious herb/plant/flower (?) that can cure all poison or increase one 's internal strength in chinese pugilistic stories.

but anyway, 1 thing s for sure, going out with mama isnt always so boring. there s always a chance u can learn something too!

I'm astounded by this conversation between Gatchaman and evil rei regarding Einstein. Their exchange of words mirrored, almost identically, to a famous exchange of words by Einstein himself and yet another famous scientist, the chemist Niels Bohr. Back then Einstein have already founded his most famous theory of relativity, but still stumped by his ever increasing failure in proofing the one most important theory of all, the single theory of everything, defined by only one equation that connects newtonian physics, his own theory of relativity and quantum physics. This equation was to eventually elude him and other scientists even till today. Anyway, Einstein was in deep thoughts, postulating and mulling over theories, mumbling to himself. At one juncture he uttered the famous words, " God does not play dice ", simply meaning that all rules of sciences governing the physical world is based on strict rules and nothing is left simply to chance or happens ramdonly. Hearing these words, his good friend Niels Bohr, noticably irritated, replied to him " Stop telling God what he can and cannot do ! "

cannot continue work on it, lying low to bypass some copyright issue, but nvm, can let me work on concept/color design slowly. here s the color sketch of the signature scene. it s an imitation of some paintings sold at a shop in Suntec. actaully i like this artist 's painting so much i built the story to accommodate this scene. or maybe i made the entire story just because i want to do this scene. not sure which it should be now already. unfortunately, i ve tried to take note of the painter 's name twice but still cant remember it.

<酒王>

rite, Blaue Reiter. just finished reading the whole news report, i jus realised some info that i ve overlooked this morning. the chances of survival for the liver transplant patient is 90% for a year, & ranges from 50% to 70% (80% according to chinese papers) for 5 years ... so things still dont look too good for andrea de cruz even after a successful transplant.
maybe i ve developed much sympathy for her (knowing she s still not gonna live too long), i begin to feel unfair that some of those ppl has actaully diverted the fireworks on her, instead of solely on the way the media has exploited this news.

*& i thought i ve said it all on her blog, not gonna say animore on my own blog ...

I don't want to sound callous, but I very much agree with many of the folks that posted their thoughts on Ling's blog - that this entire episode is just another thinly disguised piece of tabloid news that exploits both the suffering parties and ordinary folks that will naturally feel compassion and sympathy for such unfortunate events, now largely amplified because of the celebrity status of those involved. The media immediately recognizes the potential for a souped up melodramatic session and the recieving end of the party, ever ravenous for news like this, falls for it hook, line and sinker.

this morning, i din noe it s my sis chinese birthday. well, actaully i tink nobody else d noe abt anybody else 's chinese birthday in my house, except my mum. for this year 's chinese birthday, my mum senses that the global turn of things isnt too favourable & there s a crucial need for my sis to break away from such bad luck. something mus be done, & if there s a day to do it, then there s none better day than today, her chinese birthday!
with her vast knowlegde on the subject of ... errhhhh ... south-east asian common people cultural, beliefs & practices(?), we can always trust her to come up with the best counter-measure to tackle such a tricky situation. the plan was executed very smoothly in her hands. early in the morning, she proceeded to boiled 2 eggs which was scrutinised & carefully selected the nite b4. then under her professional guidance, my sis 'kok' the egg against all 4 corners of the dinner table, before eating it. on seeking her expert consultation, i understand that this tactic will 'kok' open the year & bring bck the good luck, if employed properly on a chinese birthday. although i ve been imparted much of my mum 's wisdom on such, this s a new one she pulled off todae. amazing. see, the master ll always keep a trick or 2 up their sleeves, so as to surprise the pupil once in a while.
nvm, i m gonna seek her professional advice when my chinese birthday comes. this year my luck really sucks, no career, no gal, not even 4D. but this time i ll ask for something more powerful & things r definitely gonna change for me ... dun say 'kok' egg on table corner, 'kok' my head oso can!

panic room, david fincher 's new movie website, got this script to screen section kinda interesting. it shows the development from storyboard to conceptual design to digital storyboard to finished scene of a sequence. david fincher likes to use digital visualisation for his live action film, wonder if it s a common practice nowsaday in hollywood live action movies to do tat for complex sequences.

    horse running

a few months bck, i ve brought this book Horses & other animals in motion for reference purposes in animation. it s actaully a cheaper version of the 1887 Animal Locomotion, an extraordinary compilation of high speed sequential photographs, by Eadweard Muybridge (1930-1904). basically, it s action photos, taken at 1/2000th second, of horses & animals against ruled bckgrounds (there s another book entirely on human beings oso). at that time nobody was able to do so yet with the existing photographic technology, until Muybridge came along. i shant describe in details his method but i m trully amused to find tat it s kinda similiar in principle to how they did the bullet time sequences in Matrix. he oso had a battery of 24 cameras positioned parallel to the bckdrop to capture the animal 's movement across it (it s something difficult to do bck then, but dun ask me exactly how so hehe!). of coz, in Matrix they got cases where cameras re facing one another which re much more complex (but hey, they ve oso got computers in aid!).

as a 'picture book', it s a lil surprising to find tat what interested me most is in the part with words, the publisher notes, which s actaully more like a biography of Muybridge. there is no lack of juicy materials on Muybridge 's private life, including how a stagecoach accident left him a serious head injury which was rumored to be the cause of his eccentric behaviour, or how he shot his wife 's lover after discovering he s not the father of his wife 's baby, and how he was acquitted, not on the grounds of insanity but that the victim deserved his fate. but afterall, this is still just the life of another man, eventful or dull. what interested me, of all this, is how Muybridge was brought into developing such photographic techniques, which allowed ppl to see clearly for the 1st time the attitudes taken by animals (& later human) in motion. & yes, how longwinded can i be, to only reach this point now.

it s really something simple & straightforward. this guy Stanford, who bred horses & raced trotters, held (correctly but without proof) that when horses are in a fast trot, there s some point of time when all its 4 legs r off the ground. we all know this now (esp animators), but bck then there s no way to proof it. so Stanford approached Muybridge to provide photographic evidence but then many things happened & it s only at a later pt of time, tat Muybridge was able to come bck to it.

yes, Stanford 's spirit to stand by his assertion is indeed admirable. but i cant help to think (rather cynically): so what if he jus forget abt the whole thing if nobody believed him? why took all the trouble? afterall i d ve know abt that sooner or later, & now tat i know, do i care if the horse 's legs never even touch the ground at all in a fast trot (if i dun happen to be an animator?), not to mention abt some guy by the name Stanford. & wat abt the guy who 1st claimed the earth to be round, or tat the earth revolves abt the sun?

how far do ppl go to prove their point? how much do they put in for their beliefs? is the motivation of pride, of vanity, of righteousness, or simply an act to follow the heart? but being the ordinary person i m, on day-to-day basis facing such situations, i guess the most likely question would still be: worth it a not?

worth it a not? gosh, know i m not wise enuff to know. not now. maybe the answer ll neber come by if i keep stopping to comtemplate my time away. & maybe, only by moving along ll it be revealed to me in time to come. & this, i can only believe.

i told my bro i feel tat the showdown of spider-man is a little bit of letdown, maybe i expected more. then he reminded me tat the original showdown was actaully shot at World Trade Center b4 the 9-11 incident. they ve to reshoot it after tat. probably that s the reason, or probably i m the only one who expects more for the finale. wonder if they ll put the original sequence in the dvd.
i really regret reading the movie book b4 i watched it, coz i know abt the twist & turns in the story from there, so i dont find the drama as dramatic (pardon this poor expression) as it s supposed to be. but i really like how they played Uncle Ben 's death to bring out that with great power, comes great responsibility motto, which contributes to the awakening of this ordinary hero, and shapes the person/hero, Peter Parker/spider-man would be for the rest of his crimefighting life.
now that i ve watched the movie, my withdrawal syndrome begins. always like tat. the anticipation part seems to give more fullfilment then actually watching the movie itself. maybe it feels something like, by continuously pursuing something, be it a foolish dream or a childish hope, a person ll feel fulfilled in life, if not happy, regardless whether he achieves it in the end.
so, does it mean that now i should shift my anticipation to Episode II but not go watch it when it s released & wait for the dvd release after which i m not gonna buy too? then there ll always be something to look forward to rite?
    yah rite ...
