Jim Hamil is one of the most recognizable names in the Kansas City art world. Jim is a former Hallmark Cards artist and is well known for his beautiful renditions of the Plaza and other local landmarks. After decades of working in watercolor he has achieved a masterful handling of the medium. His delicate use of color and his purposeful positioning of light bring to the viewer his fresh, uniquely personal vision of many of our local scenes or to whatever he chooses to paint

A Tribute To Trudy Furney

In  April 2008 a committee was formed to solicit funds for a tribute to the late Trudy Furney.  Friends, students, and colleagues were contacted in the hopes of raising enough funds to have constructed a piece of sculpture that would be a fitting tribute to Trudy.  Approval for the placement of the sculpture piece was obtained from USD #407 School Board and Russell High School.  It was felt that RHS would be an appropriate place for this sculpture piece to be placed since Trudy taught there for 31 years.  The tribute was dedicated in Oct. 2009.

Trudy is remembered as a friend, teacher, or maybe a colleague.  And if you knew Trudy you could never forget her friendliness and that distinctive laugh of hers.  She was an outstanding art educator, a successful artist, and a promoter of the Arts.  It is because of all her accomplishments that a sculpture piece was placed at RHS in her honor.

The front of the piece has Trudy’s face etched in granite along with her home, RHS, her favorite flower the poppy, a lion, which symbolizes ROAR (Russell’s Original Art Review) that Trudy was instrumental in getting started back in 1969, and “Champion”, that was done by a good friend of hers, artist Richard Bergen, of Salina. Also, the quote that was asked of Trudy by a news reporter in Boston, “What has been your greatest accomplishment over your many years of teaching?”  Her reply, which will also is etched below the pictures was “I sincerely believe my finest accomplishments have come through my students.”

On the back of the sculpture piece are listed some of Trudy’s accomplishments:

Trudy Furney Memorial Award given to, Angela Banchard of Shawnee, KS

Clarence Crawford Memorial Award

Clarence Crawford, was one of men who could always be counted upon to help set up the display and be  present when it was time to take the displays down.  His death left an empty place in many hearts and the lose of his expertise in the set-up and take-down work, is sorely missed.  In honor of his many years of volunteer service an award was given in his name, to Diane Engle of Great Bend for her picture titled,  "Pioneer of the Plains".
