Jaguar Transactions
The Jaguars head into the 2009 free agency period with 13 free agents.
Three of those Free Agents are restricted free agents and the Jaguars can match any offer they receive and thus retain their
rights.
Those three restricted free agents are Montell Owens (FB), Brian Iwuh (LB) and James Wyche (DE).
Both Owens and Iwuh are excellent special teams players that the Jaguars would like to have back next year.
They have ten unrestricted free agents. Three are starters (Brad Meester, Gerald Sensabaugh and
Khalif Barnes). Only Meester has a reasonable chance to return.
Three other free agents are former starters (Mike Peterson, Chris Naeole,
and Reggie Williams). None of these three are likely to be back with the team.
Two unrestricted free agents are special teams players
(Joe Zelenka and Scott Starks). Starks is also the nickel back when healthy.
The last two free agents are backup defensive backs
Pierson Prioleau and William James.
Tender Offer Compensation
Restricted free agents can be offered one of four types of tender offers from their
existing team. Each type has a defined salary and a defined draft pick compensation if another team signs your restricted
free agent. If no offers are accepted by the player he will play that year at the defined salary for his existing team. If
another team signs your RFA, a team can match that offer and retain that player or accept the defined draft compensation.
Below is a listing of the tender categories.
