About this page

Toshiba Libretto M3 or Libretto Mobile Pack III for DoCoMo was sold only in Japan. Information about it is available only in Japanese. The purpose of this page is to be the English Guide to the information available on the web.

Toshiba Libretto series

The defining characteristic of the Libretto series is the size [mm]: 210 x 115 x 34. This size is common to Libretto 20, 30, 50, 60, 70, and M3. In the later Libretto models the size was increased.

Toshiba Libretto M3 or Libretto Mobile Pack III for DoCoMo.

This defines Libretto M3 as the most powerful Libretto made in the original small size. It is more powerful than Libretto 70, the latest model in that size that was exported. Libretto M3 was made by Toshiba and marketed only in Japan by DoCoMo, the wireless division of the largest Japanese phone company, NTT. It is the third in the series of Libretto models produced by Toshiba for DoCoMo, and the most successful one. M1 and M2 will not be mentioned further.

Why own Toshiba Libretto M3?

Why have a Windows CE machine that is larger than Libretto M3 when you can have a Libretto M3 and run Windows 98 or 2000 with support for USB and 32/16 bit CardBus PCMCIA and 96 MB RAM. Windows 2000 is hungry for memory. The higher RAM capacity of Libretto M3 may give it an advantage over Libretto 100 with 64 MB maximum RAM when running Windows 2000.

Highlights:
- Windows 98/2000 machine smaller then some Windows CE machines.
- Same size as original Libretto (20, 30, 50, 70)
- Maximum RAM: 96 MB, more then even Libretto 110. Ready for Windows 2000.
- USB port in I/O Adapter.
- One PCMCIA Type II 32/16 bit CardBus slot. Can also be used for USB Adapter card. Unlike in other Librettos, this slot is on the left-hand side so when you are using the built-in pointer device on the right-hand side of the display your hand will not rest on the PCMCIA interface cables.

Retail package does not include a standard size battery, only one large size battery which sticks out beyond the front end of the screen. This may be OK for using in the car. If you are buying this Windows 98/2000 machine for maximum portability, to carry it with you everywhere, possibly even in your pocket, instead of a Windows CE machine, you should also consider buying a standard size battery to transform it into a trully pocket computer.

Adorable Toshiba Libretto

Go there for general information about all Libretto models and for links to other Libretto pages. While you are there, find the Libretto mailing list information, I will not repeat it here. Mailing list can provede excellent support for any problems, including how to replace the Japanese Windows with the English version.

Also search for 'browser' to learn how to configure your browser to view Japanese web pages. You would need that to follow the other links on this page. Most of them are links to web pages written in Japanese. Even if yo could not read Japanese, you need to configure your browser to properly display Japanese characters. Japanese character set has two sets of characters for Latin alphanumerics: one set of single byte ASCII characters and one set of double byte JIS or shift-JIS characters. The second set would display as 'trash' if your browser is not properly configured. There is a test for your browser at the top of my page with Japanese links. When your browser is properly configured with Japanese fonts, and you select character set as Japanese Shift-JIS or Auto-Detect, the two test lines should display the same characters with somewhat different size.
