Since Marshall Williams Faulk shifted to San Diego State , he started studying chose Public Administration as his major. His GPA for his first semester was a solid 3.1. Marshall was also firm about making his mark on the football field. Marshall came in form in the national scene in San Diego 's State second game of the season against Pacific. He made his place in the contest when Wright was injured during his first quarter. In just three periods Faulk ran for 386 yards and seven touchdowns, as the Aztecs won 55-34. His rushing total broke the NCAA mark which was earlier made by Indiana tailback Anthony Thompson and also got him the Sports Illustrated's Offensive Player of the Week Award. The Aztecs team performed much better in 1991. Sophomore David Lowery won the quarterback job and did a nice job while ending the season raking 20 in the nation total offense. Together with Marshall and Rowe, David gave San Diego State one of the country's most explosive offenses. The team received a bid for the Freedom Bowl since their first post-season appearance in 1986 but lost 28-17 to Tulsa .

Marshall posted 2,227 yards from scrimmage, the sixth-highest total in NFL history. Marshall was sent to St. Louis in the 2nd and 5th rounds picks, numbers 36 and 138 overall. He also won the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year award for three years consecutively from 1999-2000. In the year 2000, Marshall won the NFL MVP award. During the 2002 season, Marshall seemed a bit tired and signs of his aging were showing. He had career lows in starts and carries and his rushing average went down below 5 years in four years record. During the 2003 campaign, both Marshall and Warner were not in a healthy state. Marshall suffered a pair of injuries, a broken right hand and torn cartilage in his right knee which kept him out of the game for a month and a half. But Marshall did come up with many impressive games during the end of 2003 season.
