Officer investigated

in incident with youth

EL MIRAGE - A police officer has been placed on paid leave pending an investigation into whether undue force was used in confronting a juvenile, police said Monday.

The incident, which was videotaped by a nearby resident, occurred Sunday afternoon after police were called to break up a fight, said Sgt. Annita Boynton, an El Mirage police spokeswoman.

The investigation centers on Officer Alvin Mayhew,an 18-month member of the force, and a 16-year-old boy who ignored repeated orders from police to leave the fight scene, Boynton said.

Officer uses stun gun

to stop cafeteria fight

DEER VALLEY - Six students were suspended Friday after a noon brawl at Sandra Day O'Connor High School, 35th Avenue and Happy Valley Road.

A Phoenix police officer used a stun gun to break up the fight, said Deer Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Sandi Hicks. Police are hired as school resource officers at all Deer Valley schools.

The six students started shoving each other and the fight escalated in the cafeteria, where about 400 students were at lunch. The six students could not be pried apart, Hicks said. Police used the "touch phase" of the stun gun at the lowest setting to break up the fight, Hicks said.
