Mesa man exposed self using photos, police say

MESA - A mechanic told police he has plastered Polaroid photos of his genitals on the car windows of up to 100 women for at least six years, officials said Thursday.

Jeffery Howard Pritchert, 41, of Mesa, also told detectives he has exposed himself to women.

Mesa detectives are working with Chandler and Gilbert police to determine if similar cases in those cities are related and are asking possible victims to call them. One victim has come forward since police released the news of Pritchert's arrest.

"We think there may be more out there because it has been going on for so long," said Mesa police spokesman Sgt. Chuck Trapani.

Trapani said often people who engage in indecent exposure over a period of time eventually commit violent sexual crimes. Already this year, Mesa received reports the "greasy" photos found on cars once in January, twice in March, and once April 6.

"We are hoping we caught him in time," he added.

Police arrested Pritchert on Tuesday after they witnessed him placing a photo on a car window in a lot at Gilbert Road and McKellips Drive.

"He tried to expose himself and got caught. This was a way for him to expose himself without getting caught," Trapani said. "He would wait for the victim to go back to the car to get her reaction."

They found more photos in his car, a glass pipe and methamphetamine. Pritchert, who was wanted on a probation violation, is being held without bond.

Mesa police have received 30 reports of the photo incidents since 1999. Those cases were connected by police because of an "identifying mark" on Pritchert's genitals, officials said.

The break in the case came when police obtained DNA at the scenes of indecent exposures on Nov. 13 and Dec. 19. The DNA from those samples matched and was placed into the national Combined DNA Index System. Last month, police got a match to the DNA linking the crimes to Pritchert.

Pritchert served time in state prison for misconduct involving weapons. He is the brother of Craig Pritchert, a former Arizona State University baseball star, who pleaded guilty last year to bank robbery in a modern "Bonnie and Clyde" spree with a female partner, Nova Guthrie.

Pritchert faces possible charges including public display of explicit sexual materials, public sexual indecency, possession of dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia.
