Report says man killed by police was suicidal

MESA - A Queen Creek man was suicidal the morning he was killed by police officers outside a gas station in November, according to a police report released Wednesday.

Todd Roberson's longtime girlfriend told police he called her about an hour before the shooting saying he was depressed and that suicide was the only solution, the 128-page police report shows.

Before they hung up, they agreed that she would pick him up. After the call, somebody called police and reported a man with a gun in his lap sitting in a truck outside a gas station at Baseline and Alma School roads. A witness said he saw Roberson on a pay phone at the station the same time the call was made to police.

Roberson, 44, was shot and killed when police say he got out of his car pointing a makeshift weapon that looked like a gun in their direction. Officers fired in fear of their safety, according to police.
