OK I'm an anarchist libertarian and think we should get rid of all government. But maybe we should get rid of the police first and get rid of access phoenix last!

Residents work to keep public access cable channel

Jan. 9, 2006 12:00 AM

Mary DeHerrera is fighting to keep her show, B.S.ing with Mary, and other local cable broadcasts on the air.

Phoenix City Council members last month decided to cut the Cox public access channel that airs shows produced by residents, which will save more than $100,000 a year.

DeHerrera and other petitioners were at the Burton Barr Central Library on Sunday collecting the 10,000 signatures they need by Jan. 20. A successful petition would either change council members' minds or put the issue on a ballot, said Jerry Dobbs, Access Phoenix executive director.

"They're taking freedom of speech away from the people, and I think that's a horrible thing," DeHerrera said.

Councilman Tom Simplot said access channels used to be major outlets for free speech, but an explosion of Internet sites and publications has opened more doors for expression.

Access Phoenix, or Cox Channel 98, broadcasts 140 shows, including news commentary shows such as DeHerrera's, religious shows and music shows. Channel 98 is the only one of five Cox access channels being dropped.
