Pima County, Marana settle suit involving high-speed chase

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Pima County and Marana will pay $291,000 to settle a lawsuit by a teenager who was seriously injured nearly two years ago in a high-speed chase involving county sheriff's deputies and town police.

Codi Lee Colvin, then 16, suffered head injuries, a broken back and other injuries in the crash on April 21, 2004, according to the suit.

Gabriella Bernice Grijalva, the 17-year-old driver of the car, was killed when she lost control of the vehicle after leading police on a 30-mile chase at speeds topping 100 miles an hour, authorities said.

Records show the teens had skipped school, and Grijalva did not have a driver's license.

The settlement calls for the county to pay Colvin $258,000 and for Marana to pay $33,000.

The county Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the settlement Tuesday after a closed discussion. The Marana Town Council approved its portion of the settlement last month.

Deputy County Attorney Amelia Cramer said the county did not admit any guilt in the settlement.
