A Surprise police officer was recovering Sunday after he was shocked repeatedly with his own Taser stun gun.

Officer Brandon Lindsey, in his fifth year on the force, was attacked Saturday night by a suspect wanted for outstanding warrants. Lindsey went to the suspect's home in the 12900 block of Tara Lane, where the incident occurred, officials said.

The suspect, John Maldonado, 47, of Surprise, shocked the officer "about three or four times" after getting the weapon away from him, Surprise police Sgt. Scott Bailey said.

Lindsey was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, though he was not seriously injured.

The Taser is used by police officers as an alternative to deadly force.

Surprise police arrested Maldonado later Saturday and charged him with aggravated assault in addition to charges related to his outstanding warrants, police said.
