Life Cycle

The moss lifecycle includes both sexual  and asexual reproduction. Here are the steps in the lifecycle of moss.

First the moss plant produces sex cells, either eggs or sperm. Sometimes both gametes are produced on the same plant. Both the egg and the sperm are produced by mitosis and are monoploid.
Second the sperm swim through water until they are able to reach the egg. Fertilization will occur when an egg and sperm unite.
After the egg is fertilized it has two sets of chromosomes and grows right there on top of the gametophyte. Although this new plant is not called a gametophyte it is called a sporophyte.
The sporophyte produces by meiosis. Each spore being monoploid.
Wind then blows the spores away from the sporophtye.
They will then grow when they reach a moist or damp area.
The spore divides through mitosis and grows into a new gametophyte.
This process repeats itself again.
