Nusretiye Camii

Nusretiye Camii

The name means Mosque of the Victory, but it does not refer to a victory over external enemies. It was built by Mahmut II in 1822-26 to celebrate the massacre of the Janissaries, the guards of the Sultan who from being the strength of his army had become a threat to his life.
