A Genealogy Work in Progress

The content of this site was primarily transcribed from "The Francis Sylvest Story" written by Vince Edward Sylvest, a great-grandson of Francis. Vince is the oldest brother of Thomas Ard Sylvest, who is my father. My name is Paul Jude Sylvest and I am happy to provide this fascinating information to all who are interested.

It is my hope that this site will spark the interest of all Sylvest relatives who may wish to update their family tree.

For more on Francis Sylvest and his descendants, scroll down and/or click on the links in the frame at the left side of this page. Surf in often for updates.

One interesting and remarkable fact is that seven of Francis and Martha's children lived to produce 68 first cousins. This Sylvest family has certainly grown exponentially since then. Where do you belong?

UNWRANGLING OUR RELATIVES

Francis Sylvest and his wife became parents of eight children, seven of whom lived to produce families of their own. They set the pace of seven segments of this story. Each segment is identified by a ROMAN NUMERAL such as each child is identified.

I. Francis Marion Sylvest married Mary Jane O-Rourke, also spelled O-Rorke. They produced twelve children in Marion County, ten miles East of Columbia. They were mainly Catholic. One moved to Mobile and became Methodist and another moved to Bogalusa.

II. Nehemiah, the second child of Francis married to Lenora Jayne Sylvest, the daughter of Emanuel Sylvest, who is the subject of still another SYLVEST story being compiled at this time. They mainly lived five miles West of Franklinton in the Bethel Baptist Church community of which they were a part. Nehemiah and Lenora produced twelve children also.

III. Simeon Sylvest was married to Mary Jane Carpenter. This Sylvest family domiciled twelve to fifteen miles North of Pearl River, Louisiana on the Bogalusa Road. It was the Bethlehem Baptist Church community of which they were a part.

IV. William Rankin Sylvest was shot at ambush over the love of a woman on March 12, 1875.

V. Mary Ann Sylvest was married to Elias McDaniel. They produced four children about a mile North of Springcreek, La. Post Office and Baptis Church Community of which they were a part.

VI. Edward Alexander Sylvest was married to Leah Wallace and they had twelve children. They domiciled seven miles West of Franklinton in the Sunlight Baptist Church Community of which they were a part.

VII. John Levi Sylvest married Emma Drucilla Hawthorne and they had ten children and domiciled fourteen miles North of Bonifay, Florida. They began in the Union Hill Baptist Community and changed mostly to the Carmel Assembly of God Church.

VIII. Rosa Ellen Sylvest was married to William Newton Passman and they had nine children. They domiciled mainly in the Canaan Baptist Church Community and changed to the Sunlight Baptist Church Community in later years. The location was six miles West of Franklinton and a quarter of a mile South of the Arcola Road.

FRANCIS SYLVEST

Death visited us in the year 1896 and called for one of our oldest and most devoted members, in the person of Bro. Sylvest, aged 88 years, 3 months and 6 days. Bro. Sylvest was born and reared on the Island of Pike, near Portugal. Leaving his native country he came to this country and formed acquaintance and married Martha Stephenson. They together united with Mt. Olive Church and were baptized by Eld. William H. Varnado abou the year 1845 and then removed to Mt. Pisgah, and from thence to Mt. Nebo, then to Sharon, where he remained a consistent member until death. He was afflicted for some time, though he bore it humbly with fortitude, only waiting the Lords own time to take him. Sharon Church has lost a faithful member, his children a kind father and the community an excellent neighbor and citizen. He leaves a number of his children and grandchildren and many friends to mourn their loss.

His funeral service was conducted by Eld. F.W. Eady at the family graveyard. From 1st Cor., 15th Chapter, 19th verse.
